    - Get running my image of XP working environment from broken Dell la My Dell laptopâ??s motherboard went dead. I copied an image of the disk to another PC. I was able to boot, but not to activate my Windows XP installation. How can I get access to my working environment again (meaning not just the data, but the installed programs and their settings)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (posted on both MS and Dell support forums) (MS- and Dell-specific questions, see below, after the details) DETAILS: Two weeks ago, my company-owned Dell Latitude D400 laptop started giving error messages. After losing a lot of time and some money (third-party replacement disk and memory ordered), I concluded that the motherboard was likely damaged - and that I would not invest more time and money into a five year old engine. I was able to connect the disk to another PC and to get a complete image of my XP installation (with Acronis True Image 11 Home). A friend lent me a PC, with a damaged XP home system (CDs missing), that I replaced with my XP image. I was able to boot, but unfortunately could not get past the activation screen. At the end of the activation-by-phone procedure (not toll-free at all, by the way), a human operator from Microsoft explained to me that a Dell OEM XP Pro could not be installed on another machine, and that I would have to get a new license. While this was quite unpleasant news, I suppose thatâ??s a consequence of MSâ??s drive against piracy - meaning honest customers cannot count on flexibility from them. However, since MS stopped selling XP, asking me to buy a new license appears somewhat disturbing - I didnâ??t ask the operator, because it took me some time to swallow that OEM license statement. And even if I could find a forgotten XP Pro at some computer shop, it is not clear to me that an activation of the old system with a new license will be accepted by MS. So, what can I do? Buy a new laptop, of course. But until I finish selecting that one and get it delivered, I need to work in my usual environment to be fully productive. What options do I have to get the image of my XP installation running on another PC? Then, ideally, when starting to work with a new laptop, I would like to install a dual-boot system. The idea would be to build up a new Vista working environment from scratch, while being able to use my old XP working environment for several months at least. The latter would be useful because it takes some time to reinstall the dozens of programs I do use on a more or less regular basis, and because I might give up using some of these, and thus need to retrieve and export the data. (1) MS-SPECIFIC QUESTION: (1.1) How can I get to run the image of my old Dell-OEM-XP on another PC? If I need a new XP license for this, where can I get it from? (1.2) Which XP exactly would I need? A Pro like the one I have? Does Service pack level matter? Does language matter? (1.3) Will it be sufficient that I enter the new Product key during the activation procedure? (2) DELL-SPECIFIC QUESTION: (2.1) If I come to buy a new Dell Laptop (Latitude E4300/4200 are likely choices for me, just waiting for some reviews), what will be the options to get my XP image running? With the intent of installing a dual-boot system, should I order a laptop with the XP downgrade option or simply a Vista, and use a separately purchased XP license (see above)?     - Xp log-on then log-off I have a toshiba laptop that was infected with some downloader trojan. Norton Internet Security caught and resolved the file. After reboot, when typing in the password the desktop background picture comes up, I get a "Loading your Settings" for about 5 seconds, then the screen flashes really fast, then I get a "Logging off" and it takes me back to the log-in screen.... This happens under local Administrator account and in All Safe modes,,,,, to include safe mode with command prompt.... On Google search it pulled up a similar issue and suggested that it was a missing file called userinit.exe or a wuaupdater.exe file that was missing.... I slaved in the drive to my PC using a HD to USB adapter and was able to access the whole drive. I replaced those files with known good ones (they were both missing on the laptop HD) but the problem still exist. I also took the c:\windows\system32\config files (registry files) and renamed them, then took the repair files from c:\windows\repair and copied them into the c:\windows\system32\config folder and was able to log into the laptop then however all the applications were not functioning properly and would have to be reinstalled. I know the problem must exist in those registry files somewhere... but how to fix it is at a loss... I tried running Commander from CD but it won't run on that laptop... says something like pci.sys fail with a blue screen.... but this is a seperate problem than the one I post here....     - Start menu and all menus disappearing, typed characters won't appe Help, when I click on the start button on the task menu it pops up briefly then disappears. So do ALL my menus, ie: right mouse click, any of the pull down menus, file, edit, view, etc. When I double click an icon it open the properties, I have to double click a few times before it will open. When typing, characters only appear if you hit the key right when the curser blinks on. My "my computer" icon is gone. I just saw that this morning. I've had this problem since Thursday morning, then it stopped and now it's back. I have run AVG virus and spyware both and it found nothing. I also purchased McAfee System Mechanic, it found the usual, registry, defrag, etc. but nothing associated to this. It's a Dell, about 5 years old running windows XP.     - Getting a free Windows XP CD? Hi. I am in need of dire help. Recently, I sent my computer to a computer repair guy for a hardware upgrade. He said he'd need the OEM Repair CD's, so we gave them to him. When we got our computer back, he lied to us and said that he'd put Vista on the computer. No. He just wiped our HD, without backing up our data, installed a non-genuine edition of XP Professional and changed the background picture. Â¬Â¬ How dumb did he think we were? Anyway, when we asked for the Repair CD's back, he suddenly stopped returning our calls. I would've just asked my OEM for another Repair CD, but they went into administration. D: Yesterday, XP failed to start and now we have no way of restoring our computer. Is there anyway to get a free CD? I have a genuine COA, so surely getting a CD wouldn't be hard, right?     - Random reboots For about 2 months I've had random reboots. It's started shortly after I upgraded to SP3 as well as to Norton Anti-virus 2008. I never get to see the blue screen before it reboots, And had to download the debugger just to read the dump files. I've upgraded the drivers, checked that everything was seated.     - Log on screen is stuck on old logon option after installing Cisco After adding a new Cisco card, I have a problem with my welcome screen. I want the new one and I can not change it to the classic log on. As soon as I hit the "Change the way users logon" button, I get a pop up that says "A recently installed program has disabled the welcome screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall the program. The following file might help you identify the program that made the change: cscogina.dll" So, I did some research and see this is a bigger problem than just my computer and looking at the Cisco Aironet 802.11 site mentions something about copying the msgina.dll file in the WinNT\system32 directory to a file named cscogina.dll. The copy command enables you to copy a source file to a destination file within the same directory. I looked and see that I do have both of the .dll files mentioned above. I just want clear instructions step by step as to what I am supposed to be copying and where it is to be pasted. I don't want to jack up any .dll files. Thank you in advance!     - Regedit and HKEY_CURRENT_USER From the name "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" I would guess that this is registry information associated with the user I am logged on as ("Steve"). Does this mean that there are other parts of the registry that I cannot search (with Edit, Find...) unless I login as those other users? I have an application which is reporting details of a program that I uninstalled a couple of years ago. I cannot find the information in any file on my system (the search still has some way to go, though).     - Can't access files and folders in shared directory Hi, I am sharing a folder on a machine running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I haven't had trouble with this folder in the past, but lately I've been unable to access files and folders. I tried to access it from a Windows XP (Service Pack 2) laptop where I log into the same account as the source computer, and I find that I can't run a number of executables. These executables appear without the usual icons (for example Opera's trademark O is absent, instead I see the generic program icon) and when I click on them nothing happens. If I attempt to copy the file I get the following error -- Access is denied. There's a folder in the share that I can't open -- the error is 'Access is denied'. There are some folders and executables I have no trouble with. How can I troubleshoot this???     - POint32.exe is now showing up in 3 to 6 place with CPU sort in Task Hi, I have noticed over the last 2 weeks that point32.exe has taken a much higher place in my Task Mgr. When I put the processes into CPU sort then it is up from 3 to 6 or so. It has a size of 5140K I do have a Wireless Microsoft Mouse to a Fingerprint USB (I don't use the Fingerprint as it was too unstable.     - XP cant see 2nd drive My daughters old Dell 8200 desktop quit - we dont know what happened but we suspect she left it on during a thunderstorm and perhaps there was a tremendous jolt that the surge protector couldn't handle - not sure though. The original symptom was 'it's dead' - no fan, no hum, no beep, no led, no boot to bios, nothing at all...dead. My suspicion was the psuu so i connected a known good one which provided power to the mb (fan worked but still no beeps, no booting, no anything). So then I reseated all the cards and all the memory sticks. Nothing. I exchanged the display card. Nothing.Removed the heatsink and reseated the cpu . Nothing. We accepted that the computer is probabbly toast but wanted to try and recover some data Then I took the hard drive (an old 40gb ATA) out and installed it in another computer as a second (slave) drive. It was tough to get the machine to boot but I moved the master/slave jumpers around a little on both hd 's and eventually got past the bios etc to Windows. * Problem is that this 2nd hard drive isnt seen by windows XP although it IS seen in the Bios. I've tried via My Computer , Windows Explorer , device manager). I guess usually one has to format it to be seen but of course I cant do that if 1.) i want the data and 2) windows doesnt find it Is there a solution?     - Windows Hangs on Start Up I have done all but System Recovery on my Computer. DOS seems to load fine but Windows seems to hang on the title screen with the working bar under the Windows XP Logo. It hangs on starting Safe Mode also. Occasionally it will finally load in Safe mode but I have not been able to get it load normally even after leaving it working all night. I am trying to save some files but I had them on the desktop and can not find the files when hooking the hard drive up to a USB Cable and another computer. Last year, I installed a PCMCIA card reader. My first attempt to install the hardware failed and produced an error message that the device "might not work properly". Fortunately, a subsequent installation succeeded.     - Win XP won't boot - Locked from Recov Console Hello all. My problems first started when I restarted and my computer said C:/windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt and it wouldn't load up. I Went to recovery console and renamed all of them to .bak and moved them to a tmp folder, then I went to the repair folder and copied those to the config folder. I Rebooted and got the "Your computer failed to start successfully blah blah" and get safe mode, last good config (doesn't work) and normal. I go to normal and get the win xp loading screen but after that it just stays black. If I try any safe mode options, it stays hanging in agp40.sys. After that, I try going to recovery console again and my password isn't recognized! It used to be blank and now it doesn't work. I tried the offline nt password recover method but when it says it loads the SAM and Sofyware and System, I go to edit them but then it gives me with "ERROR: SAM hive not loaded!" or "Software hive not loaded and that is where recovery console settings are..." Now I'm stuck, my laptop won't load at all, and I can't access the recovery console! I heard that this problem might be fixed in an SP1 version, but I only have a regular windows xp recovery console cd, is that the problem? If I slipstream sp1+ to it will it be fixed?     - Windows explorer taking up 100% CPU cycles For some reason when I play a DVD, windows explorer goes up to 100% every 20 seconds and it makes watching the DVD impossible because of stuttering. I scanned the PC for malware, viruses, and trojans and it came up negative. The hard drive is also defragged. I uninstalled the anti-virus and killed every unnecesary process and it didn't help.     - Desktop Theme not sticking I have a windows XP machine with Service pack 2 installed. I modified the registry settings to allow the luna start menu theme to display on the taskbar and start menu properties dialog. I modified the theme slightly. When I shut down the computer and re-boot it comes back in a modified windows classic gray theme with the XP start menu (two columns in gray) I can change the theme back using the display properties dialog after the machine boots up, but the choice does not save.     - HELP - Screen Display Problem This morning, for some unknown reason, it looks like the display on my monitor has shifted slightly to the right. If I'm on full screen display: the X on the top right corner is not visible; if there is a slider bar on the right side, it's not visible either. I tied all available options for display resolution and font size, but nothing. In order to see it all, I have to redice the screen size, move it so the top left corner and expand it from the bottom right corner until it's as full as the display.     - Windows Update Install I'm running XP Pro SP3. When I open IE (I usually use SeaMonkey for browsing) and go to the Windows Update page it says it needs to install software.     - Hidden device "Beep" Some time ago togglekeys stopped beeping when I pressed "Caps Lock". My own programs, calling the "Beep" function stopped beeping.     - Strange Alphabetical Format Appeared in My Documents Last week, out of the blue, when I opened up My Documents to save a doc, it appeared with a alphabetical heading in a list format. A had all my folders/docs starting with "A," and on down the alphabet. I nearly flipped out. In all my years on the computer that has never appeared. It was nearly arranged but not from anything I did. I shut down, opened up again, ran everything I could think of include One Care, and Penicillin's free scan - nothing at all showed up. What was this (it's gone now)? XP PRO, IE 6, SR2 (then); Office 2003, AdAware, Avast, Windows Defender on, no temp. internet files at the time.     - Wireless Network Showing up as Wired I installed a Belkin USB network adapter on my Dell. It all worked fine. Now the connection shows up as Local Area Network 6. There are no options for nothing wireless. I chose to have windows manage the network when I installed the drivers. I just want to be able to choose my home network and not my neighbors.     - Can SEND but Cannot RECEIVE in Outlook Express and Outlook I have three email addresses I use. They are all located on a Windows Server 2003 running SMTP and POP3 (NOT Exchange). All three accounts are identical in their setup.... use WPA and require authentication. I can send/receive fine from one account. The other two will send but not receive and there is no error message. This is true for both Outlook Express that came with XP and for Outlook 2000 which is my primary email client. If I set the accounts up an another box in my office, they send/receive fine. It seems to be just my XP notebook (SP2) that will not pick up mail from two of the three accounts. I have removed/reinstalled SMTP and POP3 on the Server. I had run ipconfig /flushdns multiple times on my XP notebook. I have removed and add the accounts multiple times in both Outlook and Outlook Express. Nothing. Will send find but will not pick up message showing in the POP3 mailboxes on the server from this machine. I keep getting pop-ups at start-up that I am missing the lnk file for
windows desktop, adobe reader, and microsoft office. How can I replace
them? I have tried Doug Knox's fix of LNK (Shortcut) file Association Fix
to restore the shortcut behavior, but this doesn't work. Is there anywhere
else to get the lnk files?
This is for WinHome XP.

same thing for me. Not only as it starts but in the start all programs menu
as well
