"Multimedia Audio Controller" has no driver available
One of our WinXP SP2 machines is showing this (yellow question mark) in
Device Manager (don't know how this this has gone on, staff member told me
this a.m.). Tried searches on google, but keep getting pointed to for-pay
driver sites, so reinstalled SP2, no change. Upgraded firmware for the
Intel 82801 AC'97 portion -- no change.
Can someone point me to a resource to correct this?

Any way to UNDO/ restore the My Pictures Folder to what it was prior

Programs wont load, icons disappear
I have the strangest problem with my XP system. The computer seems to boot up
fine, but when I click on an icon to load a program, the icons on my desktop
all disappear for a moment, then come back, and the program won't load. After
many attempts, I may be able to get something like I-Tunes up and running.
But after clicking on a song, or moving around the screen, the program will
abruptly shut down and take me back to the main desktop. Through all of this,
I get NO warning or explaination.. no error messages, nothing at all. I can't
click on control panel to see a log... the computer just stares at me. I have
up to date anti-virus software, adaware, etc. Any thoughts??? Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813311

MS Whistler Personal
My neighbor gave me his HP Pavilion 751N computer. It consists of a Pentium
4 cpu, 1.80 ghz, 224 mb ram, SIS 650, and a 72Gb HD. It also has a CD
Writer, DVD player, 3.5 diskette drive and a couple of low speed USB ports.
He could not locate the restore disk for the computer and thinks it was
discarded.
When I start it in the safe mode and then switch to regular mode it states
it's running Microsoft Whistler Personal. This is some type of XP OS.
There seems to be many more programs and folders on the C: hard drive than
show up in add/remove programs. This is true even in the safe mode. They are
also present on the start/all programs menu and even though I've not checked
all of them many can be clicked on and run.
I am asking for some input and help on:
1. Is there a way to see the programs in the add/remove programs screen or
somewhere so I can remove what I don't want?
2. I have an unopened copy of MS XP Professional and would like to know if I
can overwrite the Whistler Personal XP and how?
3. If #2 is true do I then need to find drivers for the CD, DVD and USB
devices?

How up upgrade a motherboard on a windows XP system
So, you want to swap out that old slow motherboard with something fast
and cheap? How hard could it be - my advice, be afraid, be very
afraid ....
Here are my adventures in upgrading my motherboard, may your
installation go better than mine.
I had a 5 year old k7VM2 ASRock 1.67 Ghz AMD XP 2000. I found a
Elitegroup GEForce6100PM-M2 with a 2.7 GHZ dual proc Athlon 64 with
2GB for $180. The speed really hasn't gone up that much over the
years, it still takes several minutes to boot XP.
I thought, I'd just unscrew the motherboard, put in the new one and
put back all the cables and I'd be back in business.
Well, I got the motherboard back in OK. One tip I had was to take a
picture of the USB and front panel connectors so I could then put them
back the same way on the new motherboard after I had confirmed they
had the same pinout. These connectors are all separate, but they were
labeled in my old case.
I booted up and up came the POST screen OK, so I knew the motherboard
was ok, but as soon as it tried to boot to XP, it would just restart.
I guessed that I have to reinstall the operating system.
I found this helpful link on how to upgrade a motherboard with XP
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html
If you're going to upgrade your motherboard with your existing drive,
you pretty much have to assume you're going to lose everything on it.
Since there is no practical way to backup multi-gigibyte drives, I
would seriously consider getting a new harddisk and then reattach your
old one for the files. This means hours of reinstallation, but you
might avoid the headache I'm about to describe.
When I tried doing the upgrade, I had problems with the system flaking
out on me with the screen suddently display repeating parts of the
screen and dying. It would often start the part of the install where
it is verifying the disk and then just die. Several times. There may
still be a problem with the motherboard, but I found that it started
to stop recognizing the CD ROM drive and wouldn't respond to the
correct master/slave/cable select settings. Ultimately, I found the
problem when the IDE connector broke off in my hand as I pulled the
cable. A bad cable can really make your day hard. I tried another
older cable I had and I was still getting flaky operation. Finally, I
used the new IDE cable that came with my motherboard, and that seemed
to make it work a lot better, although I still saw some flakyness.
Moral of the story - if they give you a cable, use it - do not use old
IDE cables, they don't work.
When it did get through the installer start, it would put up a The
file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed" message, see
support.microsoft.com 311755 This happens because when the setup
restarts, it can't load the CD-ROM driver and can't read the cd-rom at
all.
The only way around this is to copy the i386 directory from the setup
disk to the harddisk before you start installation. I was able to use
xcopy because I had an old windows98 boot disk that I had around along
with a 98 setup CD. You might want to have these handy. If you're
paranoid, I'd copy the i386 directory to your harddisk before you
start.
All of this crashing means I have to sit through a lot of 'your disk
needs to be checked for consistency' and rebooting xp from the setup
disk which takes forever. I think I must have done this about 100
times.
At one point I had damaged my boot.ini file and setup said that the
disk was corrupted and could not be repaired and it aborted
installation. At this point, I thought all my data and program setup
was lost.
Also at another point, it said that it could not find an existing
version of windows. It somehow erased the file \winxp\system32\controls
\system. Fortunately, the system keeps a copy at system.sav, so I
copied that and got going. I used the recovery console to do that, but
you have to know the administrator password to do that. I forgot mine.
I ended up re-attaching my old motherboard and resetting the
administrator password. Moral of the story, know your administrator
password before you begin.
But you can repair the boot.ini file. See:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/repairbootini.htm
After that, it was able to complete the repair install of XP. None of
the drivers appeared to install by themselves, so I had to run the
setup Cd that came with motherboard. It would install each component
and then force a reboot - about 5 reboots in all - did I tell you that
XP doesn't boot very fast?
Well, now, I'm back to my old system pretty much, but now I need to
install service pack 2 and possibly 3 along with a zillion other
secuity updates. When I do the upgrade, the flakyness comes back and I
have several attempts where the screen goes wacky and I have to try
again. When it does start, it says that "Access denied" during the
install and it quits and then takes several minutes uninstalling
itself. How annoying.
I find support article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148
I attempt the 2nd method to reset security back to defaults, but after
another lengthy download/install, it still says access denied.
Ultimately, I set all keys under HKCR to the same as the security at
the root.
I still had problems. I found the following message:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/8de000caa89ac286/c2e82a3cae2d84a7?lnk=st&q=imsiserver#c2e82a3cae2d84a7
I removed my anti-virus and anything else I could delete in my
startup, deleted the adcctl.adcctl.1 key. I looked at all the other
keys mentioned in the message. After restarting the install and
letting it copy files, I then reset all keys in HKCR to allow admin
access while it was copying files. It finally got past the registry
key part.
During several attempts, the computer crashes, so I try removing the
cd-rom to see if that improves the situation. It hasn't crashed so
far.

my computer properties system information missing
I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2, on a Dell Workstation computer. The
problem started with a "restore my active desktop" and a message that there
were scripts running on the page. I then had My Computer problems. First,
when I opened it, nothing showed up. Then, I had to control-alt-del to close
it, and then the desktop blanked out for a time, and then I got the restore
desktop message again. When I right-clicked My computer and left-clicked
properties, the system information window did not appear. I tried system
restore, but the computer hung up on shutting down. I could not get it to
work, even in safe mode.. I removed any programs I had installed prior to
that. I moved some drivers out of the system 32 drivers folder as a way to
correct some of this, and it did (instructions from Microsoft support
website.)-- I used CCLeaner to delete all temporary files and cookies. I
searched this forum for a resolution to this, but I couldn't find anything.
There was one post that was similar, and the suggestion was to look for the
file windir%\system32\oeminfo.ini, but it does not exist on my system. I did
a virus scan with AVG, and there was no virus. I ran Spybot and Spysweeper
and got rid of some tracking cookies.
The lack of the system information window when I click on My Computer
properties is the main problem now. I have no problem opening my documents
and programs. I originally could not connect to the internet with IE, but
that has resolved.
Is there anything else I should check to see if it is working?

I have installed the latest 9.0c version of directx.
Have updated the drivers for my Nvidia GEforce 6200 SE TurboCashe TM vga.
I encountered the problem when trying to play an old game, so I started the
diagnostic tool.
I have tried changing resolution and switching to a lower colour quality,
but those things didnt help.
Any ideas? Thanx in advance Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813169
Help with user groups (I think)
My PC had a problem and I had to take it for service. Apparently the repair
tech put on another user and it's totally different from my desktop and
files. I can't access my Outlook for one thing. I saw on here how to "take
ownership" of my old user group, but I don't know how to change the one being
used for the correct one. When I go to user groups, I can only see one, and
not the one the tech put on. I'm not sure I'm even right about this or if
that's the problem or how to describe exactly what's wrong. Does anyone
know what I'm talking about or how to help me?
Thank you in advance! Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813166

SP3 caused AMD to reboot... but no Intelppm to revalue
Hi there
I'm writing this on behalf of my dad, who's in Spain. I'm in the UK so I'm
trying to help him over the phone, and it's not easy.
I won't go in to too many details as you all know the problem: an AMD
processor, SP3 installed back in May, no problems initially but for the
past two weeks it's been rebooting (unless you go into Safe Mode and then
restart, and occasionally it will go in normally, but this can take many
attempts).
I know the fix, go to Safe Mode, then Regedit, then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\System\CurrentControlSet\Services and then go to Intelppm and change the
Start value from 1 to 4.
However, there is no Intelppm, it goes straight from IntelIde to Ip6Fw.
He's checked the other ControlSets. He doesn't have a ControlSet001 for
some reason, he has an 002, 003 and 004 and the Current one. However,
changing just the Current one should be enough.
Intelppm is not in any of them.
Anyone have any further ideas of fixes? Tried rolling back but it was a
while ago, back in mid May. He could try reinstalling XP but I'd be worried
about this, as this is not something I'd like to risk over the phone. Would
also mean having to reinstall all the patches since his initial XP CD (from
ages ago), and he has a sloooow connection.
Thanks.... Any thoughts appreciated. I have had a look on the Net, but
have not yet found anyone else who has had this reboot problem and who also
has not got an Intelppm section within their current Services.
We've also tried typing "sc config intelppm start= disabled" into Run
Many thanks

XP Pro peer to peer limitation ?
I am trying to help a friend currently running a XP Pro peer to peer
networking, the system were setup by someone else many years ago but now
they cant find the guy anymore, so I step in to help with some of the
problems they are having.
They store their PST on the XP pro machine, 6 users, each PST between 300MB
to 1.2GB, sometime one user (same user) cant access her PST, but after a few
hours (with no other users logging off the system) her email magically works
again, but this can be random, I am wondering of XP Pro has the same user
count limit as 2000 (10 concurrent) ?
I am in middle of planning to upgrade the whole network to SBS2003, but need
time to work out how their files are store first and what apps they use, its
a mess, some files are stored on the XP Pro, some on workstations, and using
Vice Versa to sync the data to the XP Pro PC, why ? I dont have a clue :)
But in the meantime, I suspect XP Pro should support the number of users,
except for the PST, most files are pretty small (DOC/XLS), the LAN are on
100Mbps with 1 station using ethernet-over-power adapters on 85Mbps (this
user dont have connection issues)
Thanks for any help Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813157
USB external hard disk problem
Had several 2.5 and 3.5 external hard disks plus a memory stick that plugged
into the USB ports on my laptop. They have all now come up as unknown
devices. I think XP does not need drivers for these but I cant get it to
recognise them. Fairly sure it is not a hardware problem (happens on all
ports). Re-installed Service Pack 2 - no change. Went to re-install
manufactureres recovery disk for XP Home which said that my existing version
is newer than that on the recovery disk - I assume because of subsequent
iinstallation of SP 2. Do I have to re-install XP Home regardless ? Does
anyone know how I can get XP to recognise these drives please, as I am slowly
going mad with frustration ? Thanks Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813144
Monitor not going into sleep mode
I appreciate the fast response to my initial question, but I don't know how
to check to see if something is running in the background. Can you supply
that information?

help please with XPpro recovery console
suddenly i can't boot into Windows. BIOS is not detecting either of my
SATA HDDs. It does see my floppy my DVDRW and the external USB
hardrive,
and it put the external hdd in the boot sequence. i cannot put the c
drive into the boot sequence cause it isn't being detected.
want to try to use the recovery console, although i think the problem
is in the PSU or the Mobo.
when i boot off the XP system disk, it gets to the menu where i select
to run the recovery console, get to a DOS screen that invites me tp
type EXIT. but no options to run the recovery console. in a support
book it says that to enter the number of the XP installation, but
there is no opportunity to enter anything other than to reinstall XP,
quit or run the recovery console. i do not want to reinstall XP and
loose my data.
i am stuck. Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813133

Windows XP RC1
Is it still possible to use the original Windows XP RC1 download candidate?
It seems to install just fine...can it be activated just like other versions
of XP (SP1. SP2, etc)? I was one of the original beta testers and found the
CD laying around in some of my software collection and was wondering if I
could use it? Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813120
Monitor not going into sleep mode
I've been having this problem for a long time. My monitor will not go into
sleep or idle mode. Sometimes it will, but it seems lately, that it won't.
I have updated the video driver per Dell support as I have a Dell Dimension
9100. It worked the day I installed the updated driver but then the
following day, it stopped working. Does anyone have a clue on how to fix
this? I'm to the point that when I'm away from my computer I just turn off
the monitor manually. Tag: M$ Mgmt Consonsole View Error Tag: 813119
