    - Process invisible to Process Explorer I have the "USB Aquarium" from http://www.dreamcheeky.com/index.php?pagename=product&pid=10 It starts automatically with an entry in HKLM/Run, and puts an icon in the system tray. If you use this icon to Quit, then it stops. When my wife uses fast-user-switching, it starts a copy of "Aquarium.exe". When she logs off, this process gets terminated, but the aquarium doesn't stop. From Process Explorer, I cannot find what is keeping the aquarium running, and the only way to stop it is to ask her to logon again, then stop it from her system tray icon before logging off. There are a couple of DLLs in the same directory as the aquarium.exe; might one of these be causing the aquarium to keep going? Or, is the device just sitting there, doing its "thing", until something (another copy of aquarium.exe) comes along and instructs it to stop?     - Java: no main class? (shot in the dark) I know this isn't a java ng but the java ng's are all but dead. so if you don't know then no need to wasting ur energy to post a "this is not a java ng" ... nonetheless, i thot i would shoot in the dark. I installed Sun's JRE 1.6.0_06 and edited both my PATH and CLASSPATH variables to the appropriate directories. PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\BIN;... etc I have tried simple codes which I know work on a (another platform) but for some reason they won't work on Windows XP Professional SP2. _<I>any</I>_ help would be appreciated.     - Netgear software removal crippled XP I removed Netgear Storage Central Manager from my system. When I rebooted it just cycled around the "failed to start" screen. Choosing last good configuration or safe mode doesn't have any effect. Netgear support have been absolutely useless. Last I heard "one of their technical team would research the problem" That was weeks ago. Sony told me to use the recovery disk that came with the machine BUT..... Because the system is Sony it only comes with a recovery disk that will restore the machine to original setup - killing all my software, years of updates etc. 1. How can I find out what's crashing the machine? 2. If I buy a new XP disk will I be able to re-install windows and keep all my software & settings. 3.     - Webcam woes I have tried installing a webcam on my daughters laptop (Win XP Home, SP2) but get the following error message - Cannot instantiate the filtergraph. I tried a Trust webcam initially, followed by a Mikomi but get the same error message with both. I used the supplied drivers and tried downloading them from the manufacturers websites. Googling the problem doesn't give much except to update Flash player and Direct x, which I've done. Needless to say, both cameras worked on my laptop, so I bought a third webcam which uses Microsoft's generic driver, rather than it's own. It seems to install correctly, doesn't show any problems in hardware manager, but still refuses to work in MSN, Win Live Messenger or Skype. I get either 'webcam in use by another program' (it's not!) or 'unknown error' (really helpful!). Any suggestions as to what to check/try next? Thanks. Tag: Magnify Tag: 807892

    - laptop freezes! drivers, XP causing probs? ok 3rd time of trying to post this request for ideas........ computer keep freezing and nothing helps other than turning it off. the event log shows issues with the 'service control manager' error code '7000' and '1005'. have tried to use driver magic to check drivers but it hasnt helped, not sure that the program helps. Also tried the HD tune recommended elsewhere on here but not sure how to use it.... comp has had parts replaced not so long ago but not sure exactly what! have changed anti-virus to AVG free but not sure if its conflicting with previous stuff that hasnt been removed fully? Also trying the mutli anti-virus scan also suggested by someone on another board.     - Windows wont start after installing AVG Antivirus 8 I installed AVG Antivirus 8 and it said it had installed successfully, but then the computer shutdaown because it said there was a problem. When I tried to start it up again it would not start windows. It eventually comes up with a message that the hal.dll file in windows 32 is missing or corrupted and to reinstal it. I tried to start windows in safe mode and also the last known successful starup but neither works.     - Burn CD ISO to DVD I need to create a bootable disk to reset admin account password of a locked out XP PC. This site offers a registry editor tool- http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ The tool offered on the sire is an CD ISO image that I have downloaded. I unsuccessfully tried to burn the ISO image to a DVD+R . My questions is it possible to burn a CD ISO to a DVD+R? If not what are my options, do I need to buy a CD+R to burn the ISO?     - PC won't come out of Standby When I try and bring my computer out of Standby the power light comes on the fans start (not sure if the Hard drive spins up) but the monitor and all USB devices do not start.     - .exe files taken over by winrar - how to resolve? Hi Folks, I recently installed winrar to compress files with, but found that it has now taken over all of my .exe files. I've uninstalled winrar now, but they still show up with the winrar icon and having problems accessing some of the programs that need that .exe file corrected.     - SP3 and Dlink Wireless NIC problem (partially solved) I installed SP3 on a XP Pro computer using a Dlink DWL-G510B wireless NIC. After the installation I got the following error message with every boot. "AirGCFG.exe - Entry Point Not Found the procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll" It seems SP3 installs a new version wlanapi.dll that is not compatible with AirGCFG.exe. The NIC works and wireless connects, just have the boot error message. I tried to get an older version of wlanapi.dll, but could not find one in either the driver files from Dlink or on the web. I emailed Dlink, but no response yet. Did find that AirGCFG.exe is the Dlink NIC monitoring program that loads as a TSR (but does not show in MSCONFIG). Windows Defender (Software Explorer) showed it and allowed me to disable it as a TSR. Now I do not get the boot error message and the NIC still works. Will post back if I get a reply from Dlink.     - Programs not installing I installed windows defender on my computer, and when i tried to uninstall it said i was missing a file, i tried to reinstall it to see if that would give me the missing file, and now i get a box that keeps popping saying beginning program installation, but it never happens the box closes and comes back over and over and over, now when i try to install any other program it either freezes and nothing happens or i get an error message saying another program is trying to install and needs to finish first.     - AVG free edition of 8.0 I upgraded to the free version of AVG 8.0. With the 7.5 edition there was an icon in the task bar. The Icon is no longer there with this new edition. Is there a way to put it there and have it stay there. I can go to my programs - AVG free 8.0 - and click on AVG Free tray Icon and it will send an icon to the task bar.     - Help with user accounts My sam file got messed up and I had to replace it. Done that with no problem. After fixing the sam file and the computer rebooted it started like a new install got all my e-mails and address back into o.e now I can not get my favorites back into ie 6. when I go to my computer and go to docs and settins I find my old user folder and a owners folder.     - Files converted to txt files I have a 5 year old Sony desktop running Windows XP. The computer has a partitioned hard drive and the C drive filled up to near capacity. I have been trying to take off or move programs, but none of the utilities work except Windows Explorer. When I look for files such as cleanmgr they are in their correct directories but appear as txt files.     - How do I change folder views - I get the search screen Hello, How can I change this in Windows XP: When I go into windows explorer (right click on START) and click on a folder, the "search results" screen comes up. Only if I right click on a folder can I select explore, then the folders contense is shown. If I use the folders view on the left hand column, it works correctly but this is annoying to use.     - code 39 after installing sb sound card in pci slot (xp pro) receiving code 39 ..... cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted..missing etc etc.....     - Incorrect file association icons I recently installed new MP3 software and want to associate MP3 type files with it. In Explorer I used Tools/Options/File Types to change the association, but it did not change the icon in Explorer. I now see a Windows Media Player icon, although when I double click on the file it does open in my new program. I am also experiencing the same problem with WAV files and another program. I have spent allot of time searching for an answer online, but assume I need to edit the registry, and I am always very leery about changing anything in there without professional advice.     - The Logon User Interface DLL Msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system administrator to replace DLL or restore the original DLL. Hey all, I just turned my computer on today (presumably after it installed some updates) and got the above error message. I found the MS support site describing the issue and providing instructions to resolve it ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836683 ), but pressing F8 and choosing for Windows to boot using the last settings that worked unfortunately doesn't actually work, and I still get the same message. I tried booting into Safe mode with the prompt, and still the same error. I found another page on this site with a similar problem, and the conclusive advice was to delete all ntuser.dat files to allow a log-on. I'm not a huge expert with computers, but I imagine this is a drastic step, and I want to make sure if I do it it will work.     - Wireless problem after installing SP3 Hi After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at 1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000.     - Cannot install anything MSI related Hi , Having problem running an installation that is based on MSI. Cannot run many Windows Update Installers or update Norton's LiveUpdate. I've reinstalled the latest Windows Installer package and followed steps listed in several Microsoft support articles. Trying to install LiveUpdate this is the message "Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed." The installer service is running.     - Slow Printing Problem - New Twist! One of my users - like many other people out there - is having the issue where if they select "file -> Print" from just about any application on their machine, it is taking 30 to 60 seconds for the Print Dialog Box to appear. We are using ALL network printers that are printing via SMB and using Unix Based (LPR Port) printing, and all of us ar using WinXP Pro an an Active Directory environment. No other users on any other machines are experiencing this problem. And now for the twist!... Other users on the SAME MACHINE are NOT experiencing this problem!     - All USB drivers not installing hi i seem to be having problems installing any usb drivers. i am running xp home SP3. i have connected a my webcam to the pc making sure that i installed the webcam suite first. then i get the new hardware wizard which comes up. on this i have tried both options (auto search for drivers & manually select driver location). windows then looks for the drivers in either case trying to install them but it just stays on that screen n does not progress to install the drivers. i have left it on for several hours & still no joy. tried different usb ports also. i have found that if i run windows in safe mode i am able to install all drivers & then reboot the machine to use whatever device i just installed. is there anyway to fix this so that i don't have to keep starting windows on safe mode to install drivers? i look forward to your reply. many thanks mo Tag: Magnify Tag: 807784

    - windows XP Date Error Dear Friends, Few days back During development of a time trial demo software in access 2007 I had changed the system date to advance the end date of demo to check the result and forgot to change back to the system date on the same day and did the same the next day, and since then I am in a big mess.     - Downloading stops for no reason ... Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and more difficult. Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot. Then things started to degrade. First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just stops in the middle for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't. Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either. At the time, downloading from plain-old HTTP or FTP sites were still okay. Only file sharing services such as RapidShare or MegaUpload that gave me headaches. Then, this thing turns uglier. Downloading from regular FTP sites, or even downloading a PDF file as small as 4MB would just stop in the middle. So I thought, hey, it must be the browser. Changed my browser, the problem persisted. Change browser again, hey, the same. At that time, web pages are still okay, even webpages with lots and lots of pictures open fine. Now, things has gone from bad to worse. No matter which browser I use (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Safari, Opera), sometimes the webpage would just load half-way. Click on the "reload" page, the page reloads from scratch ... and stops at half way. Webpages with lots of pictures fair the worst. Pictures loads halfways, some even didn't load. There are all sorts of things that I just can't explain anymore. So now, to all of you with so much experiences ---- What the heck is wrong with my computer ???? I am connecting to the Net via ADSL. Aztech modem. PC is Pentium Duo-Core based. OS is XP Home. 4GB of RAM. 250 GB of Hard Disk. I have scanned my PC with anti-virus softwares up and down, no virus. I have also check the firewall settings. Nothing wrong. Trojans? I dunno. But so far, Norton isn't telling me anything. So to all with so much wonderful experience ---- is there _ANY_ possibility that some settings in my PC has been changed somehow, in causing the downloading problem??? BTW, check the line also.     - NAS not showing in Network Places I have a Synology Diskstation NAS (Network Attached Storage) hooked up to my network. I have added it to my workgroup, but for some reason it doesn't show up under my Network Places. All other PC's in the network show up fine. I can map drives on the NAS and access it via Start -> Run -> \\NAS_disk (the name of the NAS), and if I use Windows' search function to search for "\\NAS_disk", it is found, and it says it belongs to the right workgroup.     - Help with System Recovery, please!!! Hi, I was having problems with my computer and tried to do a system restore. It ended up telling me that it couldnâ??t restore it and no changes would be made. I shut down computer and when I turned it on the next day, the icons were huge on the desktop and I couldnâ??t access anything. There was no taskbar and when I did a ctrl alt delete the task mgr came up very large and I was not able to shut the computer down. I turned it off was going to try safe mode but could not access it. Nothing happened when I hit F8 key so finally decided to do a system recovery hitting the F10 key. I was aware that I would go back to factory computer settings and would have do a lot of updates and installs. It went through the process and welcomed me, etc. and then went to Windows XP Home screen and said to wait. So I waited and waited and I am still waiting. It doesnâ??t leave that screen.     - SP2 Install Failure Have received Installation Failure Code 0x8007F01E. I am not able to find this error in the Windows Update error listing. I am finally (at long last) trying to upadte my VAIO PCV-RX550 XP Home SP1. The biggest move was to finally install SP2. I had been reluctant to do so over the past couple of years due to hearing about so many problemw. It is critical for me to do so now because most anti-virus programs will not run without it and my computer is currently in a compromised situation. My wife has a small problem which I hope someone can answer. She was using
her laptop which has XP installed and as she was writing the magnify came on
and we cannot get rid of it. We have looked at help and it only tells you to
start it but not finish. Help

Try right click in the magnifier window. That should bring up the exit
option.

The laptop could have a magnifier which is engaged by the Fn key with
another key, or a touchpad action. Some mouse software has a magnifier
too. You'll need to check the support section of laptop manufacturer
for ideas.
