Occasionally friends and clients visit and bring files on their laptops. How can I link
the laptop to my XP SP2 via USB with minimum fuss, in order to transfer files? So far, I
have to burn to a disk, which is slow and awkward.

You can use USB keys, which are very good for file transfer, or any USB2
case with a hard disk in it; or you can have them attach to your router and
send the files directly to your PC over your network.

There are also USB2 cable transfer kits. Here's one, no endorsement

Is there any mystery to the Belkin transfer kit or will any F/F cable do it?
Not sure what you mean by USB keys. Thumb drives? Good idea, I don't know why I didn't
think of it!

If the laptops have Firewire ports, just instal a cheap Firewire card in the
main PC. You just connect a firewire lead betwixt the PC and laptop and you
have an instant small network. No extra software required.

It sometimes happens on some systems that on removal of the firewire lead,
the system needs to be rebooted just to clean up.
