    - Files converted to txt files I have a 5 year old Sony desktop running Windows XP. The computer has a partitioned hard drive and the C drive filled up to near capacity. I have been trying to take off or move programs, but none of the utilities work except Windows Explorer. When I look for files such as cleanmgr they are in their correct directories but appear as txt files. I thought originally the files would not work because of lack of processing capacity, but now I am wondering if this is a virus. Can anyone help? Tag: Help with user accounts Tag: 807839

    - How do I change folder views - I get the search screen Hello, How can I change this in Windows XP: When I go into windows explorer (right click on START) and click on a folder, the "search results" screen comes up. Only if I right click on a folder can I select explore, then the folders contense is shown. If I use the folders view on the left hand column, it works correctly but this is annoying to use.     - code 39 after installing sb sound card in pci slot (xp pro) receiving code 39 ..... cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted..missing etc etc.....     - Incorrect file association icons I recently installed new MP3 software and want to associate MP3 type files with it. In Explorer I used Tools/Options/File Types to change the association, but it did not change the icon in Explorer. I now see a Windows Media Player icon, although when I double click on the file it does open in my new program. I am also experiencing the same problem with WAV files and another program. I have spent allot of time searching for an answer online, but assume I need to edit the registry, and I am always very leery about changing anything in there without professional advice.     - The Logon User Interface DLL Msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system administrator to replace DLL or restore the original DLL. Hey all, I just turned my computer on today (presumably after it installed some updates) and got the above error message. I found the MS support site describing the issue and providing instructions to resolve it ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836683 ), but pressing F8 and choosing for Windows to boot using the last settings that worked unfortunately doesn't actually work, and I still get the same message. I tried booting into Safe mode with the prompt, and still the same error. I found another page on this site with a similar problem, and the conclusive advice was to delete all ntuser.dat files to allow a log-on. I'm not a huge expert with computers, but I imagine this is a drastic step, and I want to make sure if I do it it will work.     - Wireless problem after installing SP3 Hi After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at 1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000.     - Cannot install anything MSI related Hi , Having problem running an installation that is based on MSI. Cannot run many Windows Update Installers or update Norton's LiveUpdate. I've reinstalled the latest Windows Installer package and followed steps listed in several Microsoft support articles. Trying to install LiveUpdate this is the message "Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed." The installer service is running.     - Slow Printing Problem - New Twist! One of my users - like many other people out there - is having the issue where if they select "file -> Print" from just about any application on their machine, it is taking 30 to 60 seconds for the Print Dialog Box to appear. We are using ALL network printers that are printing via SMB and using Unix Based (LPR Port) printing, and all of us ar using WinXP Pro an an Active Directory environment. No other users on any other machines are experiencing this problem. And now for the twist!... Other users on the SAME MACHINE are NOT experiencing this problem! Could there be something corrupt with this users profile? (NO, we are not using roaming profiles!) If so, how to find and correct the problem? All suggestions appreciated.     - All USB drivers not installing hi i seem to be having problems installing any usb drivers. i am running xp home SP3. i have connected a my webcam to the pc making sure that i installed the webcam suite first. then i get the new hardware wizard which comes up. on this i have tried both options (auto search for drivers & manually select driver location). windows then looks for the drivers in either case trying to install them but it just stays on that screen n does not progress to install the drivers. i have left it on for several hours & still no joy. tried different usb ports also. i have found that if i run windows in safe mode i am able to install all drivers & then reboot the machine to use whatever device i just installed. is there anyway to fix this so that i don't have to keep starting windows on safe mode to install drivers? i look forward to your reply. many thanks mo Tag: Help with user accounts Tag: 807784

    - windows XP Date Error Dear Friends, Few days back During development of a time trial demo software in access 2007 I had changed the system date to advance the end date of demo to check the result and forgot to change back to the system date on the same day and did the same the next day, and since then I am in a big mess.     - Downloading stops for no reason ... Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and more difficult. Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot. Then things started to degrade. First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just stops in the middle for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't. Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either. At the time, downloading from plain-old HTTP or FTP sites were still okay. Only file sharing services such as RapidShare or MegaUpload that gave me headaches. Then, this thing turns uglier. Downloading from regular FTP sites, or even downloading a PDF file as small as 4MB would just stop in the middle. So I thought, hey, it must be the browser. Changed my browser, the problem persisted. Change browser again, hey, the same. At that time, web pages are still okay, even webpages with lots and lots of pictures open fine. Now, things has gone from bad to worse. No matter which browser I use (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Safari, Opera), sometimes the webpage would just load half-way. Click on the "reload" page, the page reloads from scratch ... and stops at half way. Webpages with lots of pictures fair the worst. Pictures loads halfways, some even didn't load. There are all sorts of things that I just can't explain anymore. So now, to all of you with so much experiences ---- What the heck is wrong with my computer ???? I am connecting to the Net via ADSL. Aztech modem. PC is Pentium Duo-Core based. OS is XP Home. 4GB of RAM. 250 GB of Hard Disk. I have scanned my PC with anti-virus softwares up and down, no virus. I have also check the firewall settings. Nothing wrong. Trojans? I dunno. But so far, Norton isn't telling me anything. So to all with so much wonderful experience ---- is there _ANY_ possibility that some settings in my PC has been changed somehow, in causing the downloading problem??? BTW, check the line also.     - NAS not showing in Network Places I have a Synology Diskstation NAS (Network Attached Storage) hooked up to my network. I have added it to my workgroup, but for some reason it doesn't show up under my Network Places. All other PC's in the network show up fine. I can map drives on the NAS and access it via Start -> Run -> \\NAS_disk (the name of the NAS), and if I use Windows' search function to search for "\\NAS_disk", it is found, and it says it belongs to the right workgroup.     - Help with System Recovery, please!!! Hi, I was having problems with my computer and tried to do a system restore. It ended up telling me that it couldnâ??t restore it and no changes would be made. I shut down computer and when I turned it on the next day, the icons were huge on the desktop and I couldnâ??t access anything. There was no taskbar and when I did a ctrl alt delete the task mgr came up very large and I was not able to shut the computer down. I turned it off was going to try safe mode but could not access it. Nothing happened when I hit F8 key so finally decided to do a system recovery hitting the F10 key. I was aware that I would go back to factory computer settings and would have do a lot of updates and installs. It went through the process and welcomed me, etc. and then went to Windows XP Home screen and said to wait. So I waited and waited and I am still waiting. It doesnâ??t leave that screen.     - SP2 Install Failure Have received Installation Failure Code 0x8007F01E. I am not able to find this error in the Windows Update error listing. I am finally (at long last) trying to upadte my VAIO PCV-RX550 XP Home SP1. The biggest move was to finally install SP2. I had been reluctant to do so over the past couple of years due to hearing about so many problemw. It is critical for me to do so now because most anti-virus programs will not run without it and my computer is currently in a compromised situation.     - Black-screen and deactivate OS? After (interupted?) merger of 2 part. wiht P. Magic didnt XP boot. I found in W2000 my XP.-part wasnt active so it got activated, then no OS started in that PC. Can it be deactivated without an OS? That PC starts with Compaq, then get black with a small twinkle up to the left. Install repair is run on W2k and doesnt work in Xp. Chkdsk /r, Bootcfg rebuild, fixboot and fixmbr is run. A new Os is installed on another part. Nothing helped so far but all content seem to be in place.     - Easy transfer autostarts on XP PC I transferred what files I needed from my older XP PC to a new Vista machine. Now whenever I boot up my XP PC, the XP PC opens up a folder onto the desktop called "XXX". I can click it closed, but it is a pain to have to do every time I turn that computer on. I tried to locate the program name running msconfig.exe, but could not find it in particular. I also went to "Add/Remove Programs...", found the program, but said that certain other programs I have would/could possibly not run right if I removed the Easy Transfer application...one of which is UPnP.     - My Computer and USB Storage Devices Recently, my USB port was registering F drive. Then it grabbed onto the G: drive which is my project drive on the server. I got the G: drive back to the project files but now the USB ports dont register any drive to access in MY COMPUTER. Thus I can t access or use the USB ports for file transfer. How to I get these temp drives to show up in MY COMPUTER window again. The USB ports are working, so says the Device Manager.................I uninstalled but no luck there. Hopefully, this is a easy fix. The portable storage works on other computers in the network, just not mine anymore. UGH!     - random reboots Hi, my windows xp system randomly reboots about once or twice a day. I experiences the problem while i kept my system running over night to encode videos, to download big files or simply with msn or skype being open.     - Weird Disk Space Issue I have a strange problem with my ThinkPad T61 running Windows XP Pro. The laptop has a 120 hard drive, the C-Drive is 105 GB where Windows XP is installed and there is 15 GB ThinkPad recovery partition. Here is the problem. The other day I noticed I had only 1.5 GB of free disk space left on the C-Drive. I knew that was impossible. I opened up Windows Explorer for the C-Drive and added up the space used by all the folders and files listed on the root of the C-Drive, including the hidden ones. The total comes to 52 GB being used but Windows says I am using 103.5 GB. I have no idea where the other 51.5 GB is. It is really strange. I have never seen a problem like this before.     - invallid key while upgrading had to reinstall XP on replacement hd. The computer didn't come w/a install cd so I used an old XP SP1cd from another system. installed it no problem. Its asks for activation so I click to activate and the window says it's already activated. Fine. I insert the original install cd, click upgrade, input the coa key on the side of the machine and hello-invalid key. How can I complete the install and get this properly activated? I know the key is valid because I bought the machine new. Is it because I'm using a SP1 disc from Compac on a HP machine or could it be a non SP or a SP2 key on the sticker? The sticker just says XP home so how do I tell if it is a key for original XP, SP1, or SP2? I've had no problems using this disc on my Dell when I need to reinstall.     - SP3 installtion problem I have installed SP3 on a laptop (XP Pro) and a desktop (XP Home) without a problem but on another desktop (XP Home) the installation aborts near the end with the message 'Access Denied'.     - Check Disk started with a warning Running WinXP Pro (svc pk2). Upon bootup what appeared to be Check Disk started with a warning the the disk had to be checked because file security identifiers were incorrect or corrupt. It looked like all my sysyem files were checked..... then all the files "security identifer changed to default." After that my system operation was significantly changed. Common features were missing or inoperable: no drag-n-drop files between folders, copy is there but no paste, all files in 'Network Connections' disappeared. I now suspect a virus; but I take exceptional precautions and run multiple protection programs to avoid infection. If this scenario is familiar to anyone, please advise!! Now my question is, can I reload WinXP and "repair" the damage. I thought that you could run install from the command line (with a switch) that would allow an installation to reload over a previous install. Would hate to go bake to scratch. Help.....     - Windows Explorer Closes Can anyone please help me with Windows (not internet) Explorer? Everytime I view my video folder explorer encounters a problem and closes. It's the same whatever way I try to do it, through my documents, my computer etc. All other folders such as photo's and documents are fine, it's just the video folder. I've tried deleting it and making a new one but still the same. I've run a repair installation of XP, no change. I've tried the following solution: 1. Open command-console (START > RUN > CMD.EXE) 2. enter the command: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll 3. enter the command: regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll The reason for the crash is a problem with media previews in explorer (explorer calculates a thumbnail view of an image or the first frame of a video file). By disabling this feature (which is useless anyway) explorer stops crashing. I don't want to use this method because it also removes my photo thumbnails and I don't want to have to go through them all individually to find the one I want.     - Error whilst re-installing windows xp Hi, it seems that we were having a few networking problems, getting disconnected etc. computers performance very slow.. so my brother took it upon himself to re-install windows xp. Ok so he restarted windows, using disc started installing the software thinking it was going to install over the existing.. somehow managed to form a seperate partition, which failed.. then he tried again with some success, so now we have two partitions one that wont start up and the other will start up but we are having no end of trouble.. u name it!. missing drivers, only able to connect to internet through internet explorer for short periods of time before getting an error message saying 'system failure, windows will shut down in 60 seconds' is there any way of undoing all of this? my knowledge is basic and cant handle all of these problems!!! please help!!!     - Funny Story Funny Story. Add or Remove programs simply stopped showing anything in its programs list. Just blank. No message saying it would take a few minutes to populate the list. Nothing. Changed sort options to see if I could wake it up. NADA. It cycled like it thought it was changing the sort order of a populated list of nothing. Very odd. I tried restarting several times, like 5 I think. NADA. Still no programs in the list. So, thinks I, better get my butt onto an XP newsgroup and see what is to be said about this. So I did.     - Internet Explorer window automatically closes when I open a new wi This just recently started happening .... when I open up a new internet explorer site, any othr one that is open, is automatically closed ... a bit frustrating. Not sure what happened and why it is happening. This following sequence.....Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab In the Browsing section, uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".     - Can't access Windows Firewall-Pt. 2 Sorry for the new post. I can't get my javascript to work on "reply" - just "new question", even though I have upgraded it to the newest version. Mark, I typed in the info you gave me. In "Services", the "Startup Type" says "Automatic" and the "Status" column was blank. Then I got this error message: "Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."     - Program groups causing slow boot? I recently did a manual rearrange of the program groups for my username, the only user of the system. I also installed Microsoft Flight Sim X and updated my nVidia video driver around the same time, but I THINK that's coincidental to my problem. What's happening now is whenever I reboot, the system gets to the point where it displays the wallpaper, then appears to just hang for about 10 minutes before displaying the desktop icons!!! Weird, huh? What made me think it might have something to do with the program groups is that I contacted nVidia tech support for help in case it had to do with the driver update, and they asked for a copy of my sysinfo. When I went to generate that .nfo file, it hung for a long time in the program groups section!! HELP!!! This is REALLY annoying whenever I have to reboot! Any ideas or suggestions?? THANKS! My sam file got messed up and I had to replace it. Done that with no problem.
After fixing the sam file and the computer rebooted it started like a new
install got all my e-mails and address back into o.e now I can not get my
favorites back into ie 6.

when I go to my computer and go to docs and settins I find my old user
folder and a owners folder. When I check out my old folder shows me as admin.
In control panel I am admin. problem getting fav back into ie.6

The problem is not that your post is too long, it is that you do not explain
clearly enough and in detail what happened and what exactly you did. It
would also help not to use run-on sentences. Please tell us more about the
problem if possible and explain it in much more detail. I don't understand
what you describe.
