    - Can browse files in Explorer, can't in Office (word\excel) Greetings. I am trying to solve a mystery and maybe someone has seen this before. Computers - XP/SP2 with all patches, Office2003/SP2 I have 2 people in my orginization that can use Windows Explorer to view files on multiple mapped drives with no issues When they use File, Open in Word or Excel, the computer stops responding and the customers have to Task Manager to close Word or Excel. If they double click a file in windows Explorer, the file willl open with no issues. Not sure what could be casuing this behavior.     - Looking for assistance using MyLogon for XP Hi A while ago, I posted a question and was given a suggestion to use a product called MyLogon, which would allow my 5 XP Home workstations to access a server of sorts--actually all machines are/would be in a peer to peer network where each client has its own sets of files stored on this sort of file server. Well, by the time I got to actually doing the work, the post was purged and, naturally, I am not being able to get the process to work properly. I am able to validate a logon on the client machine but that is not what I had originally wanted. I have not seen a description of what is needed on the Server side to allow Client access. I have set up a User Account with a password on the server for each Client and then provided that User Name with password on the corresponding Client. I have set up a folder for each client in the Shared Folders on the Server. When the client attempts to enter the network password, they are advised that the server is found but the logon has failed. The logon has failed but it is not because the password is incorrect-- I have entered/deleted/added etc to no avail. Again, as I understand it, the user code/password is set up on the client but I do not see details of what is needing to be done on the server side. Any assistance would be appreciated.     - Beginner's Question: Adding a 2nd Monitor to my XP System Hello I just got a new 22" monitor, which my Nvidia Quadro FX3000 is able to drive without problems (I'm not a gamer - just regular office type applications user). Instead of eBaying my old 17" monitor, I thought maybe I can use it to increase my monitor real estates. The FX3000 video card comes with two DVI ports, so I hooked up the old screen to the second DVI port on the FX3000, but everything just slowed down to a crawl, obviously the card can't handle 2 monitors. Do you think installing a second PCI video card would solve the problem? I don't have any experience building systems so advice is appreciated.     - windows did not start successfully I keep receiving the above message everytime i start my computer. when I follow the instructions and click on safe mode, I am sent to a blue screen telling me that "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."     - Cleaning up laptop A young lady friend was just given a new laptop for her birthday and she gave me her old Compac 700. It came with the usual stuff that Comapc and Hewlett-Packard pre-install on all their machine and since this old one only has a 40GB hard drive it is already three quarters full. I would like to get rid of everything and leave only the operating system, thus making the machine even "cleaner" than it came out of the factory. Then I would install Open Office Suite and nothing else which will leave me lots of room for personal files. As usual with HP and Compaq, I don't have the actual Windows XP software.     - SP3 download fails When I click Install Updates for SP3, the Installing Updates window says, "The updates are being downloaded and installed" and Installation status displays, "Downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) (update 1 of 1) . . .     - Why Does WinXP Keep Installing A Screensaver???? Unfortunately, I've had a handful of occasions now where I've had to reinstall WinXP due to hard drive failure. Each time, and *inevitably* so, WinXP will sooner or later decide to "give" me a screensaver even though I always specify that I want no screensaver.     - How do i get the pci pnp to work again? I was trying to install a modem in a Shuttle Xps computer, but it did not want to connect to the dial-up site. So I installed a second one that did not work well in the computer. But installing the third one in the same slot (there is only one pci slot in this computer) did not get recognized.     - Too quick message to be read I assist a friend with his genuine Windows XP Home Edition computer, assuring all the updates are done and the Antivrus and Antyspyware programs are regularly run; I was unable to help him on this: from some time a very quick message (with sound) appears low on the screen at irregular intervals. It is impossible to read the message because of the short permanency. I checked the Events logs and the message is not related to any system logged event. Changing the System Notification sound I made sure it is a System Notification message but I was unable to understand from which application/service it comes from.     - Can't log in thru admin screen I have WIndows XP SP3. I have an admin screen set up, one for guests and one for me which is password protected. As soon as I log into my account with my password or try to use the guiest account, Windows starts to load, I can see the wallpaper, then logs me out (logging off message). I can not get into my computer to access the programs. I;ve booted in safe mode but safe mode has the admin page too and does the same thing.     - XP Pro firewall locked. I have a couple of XP Pro machines with this problem. We have a LAN based on SBS 2003. I can ping them successfully but I cannot access their shares. Figuring that there may be a firewall issue, I decided to disable it to see if that made a difference. However the firewall is set to on but all the radio buttons are dimmed. The 'Don't allow exceptions' tick box is available though. It is the only thing that is. Any idea what is happening?     - how to erase hard drive and reload win xp I have a dell solo 9550 laptop I got from my dad. He purch. in 2002. He used for business for 5 years and its got tons of crap on it I dont need.     - Open programs/documents not showing in task bar All of a sudden, programs or documents that are open/running simultaneously no longer show up at the bottom of my monitor (officially the task bar, right?).     - XP on a MacBook wireless problem I have a couple of Macs that run Windows XP. Everything runs fine with them except I cannot connect to my secured wireless network. The network is secured with WPA2 and MAC authentication. When I attempt to connect tthe the network I get a message that says the network cannot be reached or is out of range.     - Anti-Virus "Splash Screen" Using Windows XP (Home) SP2, IE7 Hi, I downloaded and installed an anti-virus program named SUPERAntiSpyware, version 4.0.1154.     - Read existing threads, still haven't fixed login My notebook impromperly shut down and the next time I restarted it, I was asked for a password. Unlike some logins where you pick the admin icon or guest icon, I only have user login name and password field to enter. I tried it with no password and the only known one I ever programmed. I don't remember an admin password ever being set. I tried to do the Safe Mode startup as recommended on this forum and then selected XP Pro as my program. All of a sudden I get a black screen with: multi(0)disk(0rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\*******.sys being repeated all the way down the screen, the ******* being different types of system files.     - Copying Files to CD from Floppy Disk I tried to copy files from my floppy disk onto a CD R/W disk. The files on my floppy disk are not Read-Only, but show up as such on my CD. How can I make these files not READ-ONLY files on my CD? I tried changing these CD files using Control Panel/File/Properties, but it won't work. I also tried using Windows Explorer.
