    - Everything is hidden in c: drive I have installed windows xp on c: drive. I cannot see any folder or file on this drive because all of them are hidden. I have checked tools>view >folder options, everything is normal there. I can access all these files by typing their address in address bar (i.e c:/program files) . Whenever I create a new folder in c: drive, it hides automatically as well. All other drives are working fine. Plz help. Tag: Directory c:\windows\installer Tag: 808188

    - Automatic sign-in to Messenger - problem XP Home, SP2 Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (MSN Messenger). Although I have the options checked to allow automatic sign-in when Windows loads and to "remember me" (remember name & password), it does not work, I have to manually open the program and enter my name & password each time I want to use it. The problem started months ago when I was using MSN Messenger 7. I have since uninstalled 7 and installed 8, but the problem persists. Out of curiousity, I tested Windows Messenger 4.7, and the same problem occurs - automatic sign in does not work, and name & pw are not remembered. ** I have two Windows user accounts, both Admin level accounts. This problem occurs only for one of those accounts. Because the problem exists in both messenger programs and only occurs for one Windows user, I think the problem is within Windows itself somewhere which is why I am not sending this to the MSN Messenger group.     - Triple-booting - which first? I've been using WinXP Pro since it was first released and I'm very happy with it. However, I have a requirement to learn about Vista and Linux so I recently bought a 500GB hard drive and intend to partition it in the following way: three partitions, each 50GB in size, one for XP, one for Vista Ultimate and one for Linux (probably Ubuntu) with the remainder of the disc probably split into either two or three partitions for music, photos and user documents/data. My question is, in what order do I install the operating systems, so that when I power up the machine, I'm presented with the choice of which OS to boot into?     - Run .dll errorl Using Windows XP-sp2 when I reboot my system, I keep getting this message box on the desktop "Run Dll Error Lading C:\windows\sysstem32\uptnxbkn.dll This specified module could not be found" It came up awhile after I was checking spy-bot and I migh have clicked on the wrong thing in error, this is what I am assuming, but could be wrong What does the error mean, and how do I restore it.     - Password problems.. Recently, my computer had some windows updates. I let them install and then when I rebooted, Windows asked for a password.     - why can't bootcfg find my Windows OS? I had a hard drive crash on XP Pro and I'm trying to get everything up again. XP won't start at all without the install CD. I need advice about trying to boot into XP using my existing OS. Previously I had three hard drives and I think the Windows installation was on drive letter E: on hard drive 2. Hard drive 1 (which crashed) contained C: and D:, but these were only data partitions. For some reason I think that Hard drive 1 (HD1) contained the boot loader (and MBR?) which found the Windows installation on HD2. When hard drive 1 failed, I think the Windows install wasn't in the path to boot. Here's how I tried to resolve the problem. First, I removed the bad drive and verified that the other two hard drives work (using an Ubuntu LiveCD). When I ran the XP Recovery Console, the initial screen asked me to login to the administrator account on c:\windows . I logged in successfully. (I verified that c: corresponds to e: on what used to be HD2. C: is the partition with windows installed). The problem is that when I run bootcfg nothing seems to happen. Running /list reveals nothing bootable; running /scan produces this error message: "Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations. This may be caused by a corrupt file system, which prevents boot.cfg from successfuly scanning. Use chkdsk to detect any disk errors." I ran checkdsk; no errors. Before I ran bootcfg I ran both fixboot and fixmbr without result. I noticed btw that in C:/windows there was no boot.ini. I'm on a 64 bit processor and I read somewhere that fixboot and fixmbr isn't supported on 64 bit processors. Can you verify? Is there anything else I can try? I find encouraging that recovery console initially recognizes my Windows OS; why then is it unable to make it bootable? I will probably add Vista to the new HD I add, so I guess as long as Vista can mount the drives, everything will be all right. But I would really like to get XP running--(mainly to recover my previous settings and some of the programs that I installed. Otherwise I can just install XP and Vista on my new drive and forget about the original Windows partition. But doesn't it seem strange that Windows would recognize the Windows install at Recovery Console originally and then be unable to use that knowledge to reconfigure boot.ini? Any suggestions?     - XP Service Pack 3 Installation Errors Hi, I decided that as XP Service Pack 3 was now available and I was prompted to install via Update centre that I would do so on my Laptop. I installed the version for single computers, not IT professional version. Big mistake.     - Minimized Program Icons Gone on Taskbar Hi, this happened now the second time to me. The first time it happened on my mother's latptop, which is a WinXPHome/SP2. The second time it happened today on my computer which is a WinXPPro/SP2. I had some program crash (today it was UT2004) and after logging out and back in the part of the taskbar, which shows the minimized windows has disappeared. All else is still there (Quickstart, Virtual Desktops, Search, Trayicons, etc.) I tried removing any from the taskbar and adding the stuff back, still no luck. I did not install any new software these days, but had Adobe update to current AcrobatReader. I am very well secured. There is a KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;139727 which describes the same problem, as it seems, but I do not have any Xerox software installed. Since this was a startup-folder entry and some "Make it easier" type of software, I assumed, that it may be, that Adobe uses the same software for the AcrobatReader Quickstart utility, they placed into my startup-folder. Hence I removed it. No luck either. I found no solution on the web. I tried removing the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\StuckRects2 key. I checked for Friends Greetings Sacm as outlined in a post from 2002 here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1036987252 I do not want to reinstall Windows. That is not a solution. I have collected and applied just too many custom tweaks over the years, not to talk about all the stuff written to the registry over the years. Any help would be very appreciated.     - svchost problem Hi, I have a serious problem with my laptop. Recently it has become really slow and the other day it will not show my profile. It boots up and lets me logon but it then comes up with a svchost.exe errpr and an explorer.exe error. I have tried to repair windows with my installation disk but the windows installation does not appear in the list and it only allows me to install a new copy of xp. I have also tried to expand the svchost.ex off the installation disk to C:\windows\system32 folder but it says Access Is Denied. I have tried to also open the document and settings folder but it says Access is denied. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can solve this.     - Windows XP and long flle names I thought Windows XP could handle long file names, that is, in excess of eighty characters. I use Windows XP Pro and whenever I try to change (usually shorten) the name, or even delete a file of over eighty characters, either by highlighting in Windows Explorer and clicking the big red X for delete, or right-clicking on the file to choose delete or rename, Windows Explorer gives me an error message which says Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut down, then closes. Any idea why this is? Seems to me I should be able to work with these long files names. Most of them are usually .mp3 files which after downloading have more information than I want, like artist, album, track number, year it was recorded, name of the track...mp3, all of which makes up for a file name I can't work with. I do have a program that allows me to work with the audio files but I'd like to know why XP is crashing whenever I try to access a file with a long name.     - Got two copies of WinXP on my computer. In trying to deal with a backdoor on my computer I have ended up with two copies of Windows, each on different drives. The original set up was that a first HDD was partitioned into C and D, with WinXP Pro on C. A second HDD was partitioned into K and L. Backups of C were on the second HDD on K. The computer was infected by a backdoor. I was advised to reformat and reinstall Windows on C. The computer was supplied by a firm called Evesham, now defunct, and the disk they supplied seems to be some kind of recovery disk with no instructions for its use, not a proper Windows install disk. I ran this Evesham disk, and what it ended up with was Windows on C, and also another copy Windows on K. Now during the boot sequence a window asks me to select which operating system I want to start, Windows XP Professional Windows XP Professional. If I choose the former I am into the first HDD, if I choose the latter I am into the second HDD. The first HDD has C marked as System, and K marked as Boot (shown in Disk Management). On the second HDD, C is marked System, K marked Active, nothing marked Boot. The Evesham disk when run gives me no options, such as 'To delete the selected partition press D' as you get with a proper Windows installation disk. What can I do? Oh do please help me if you can.     - Sharing Files Between Home Vista and Home Windows XP? I just bought a new Windows Vista Home Edition, and we already have a Windows Home WIndows XP. Both are on the same Linksys router, the old Windows XP's IP address is 192.168.1.100 and the new Vista's is 192.168.1.102 I can ping the old Windows XP (at ...100) from the new Windows Vista (...102), but not vice versa. They both belong to the workgroup "WORKGROUP". All I want to do is share files between these two home computers on the same LAN. The Windows XP cannot find the Windows Vista computer through Windows Explorer, but Windows Vista at least asks for a login and password when I try to view files on Windows XP via \ \192.168.1.100\c$ Further, when I enable the Guest account on Windows XP, Windows Vista says it cannot even find the Windows XP computer at all.     - CTRl Alt Del Login screen not showing Few days back my PC infected with virus and trojans.Bit Defender identified it and deleted few files but after that safe mode didnt boot up(culprit from my understanding is rundll.exe in c:\windows\system32\rundll.exe). it shows the black screen with "safe mode" letter in each corner of the screen but ctrl alt del login screen will not show up.     - XP Home cleanup: delete uninstall directories after installing SP3 ? Hello, I originally had XP Home SP1 OEM (english) with a new PC several years ago. Since then I installed all updates, fixes, service packs etc. Now at SP3 level without any problems. I noticed that all those years of updating the system resulted in lots of wasted disk space due to a series of uninstall, hidden diretories under windows: \$hf_mig$ \$MSI31Uninstall* \$NtServicePackUninstall$* \$NtUninstall* All above directories total a whopping 1.41GB of disk space. I also noticed some associated log files, even though wasted disk space is not as significant: kb*.log Q*.log So, given that my system is currently working fine, and I don't want to uninstall anything, can I safely "cleanup" my system by deleting all the above? If not, is there some other way to accomplish the same thing, for example order a new CD at SP3 level and run some "re-install/cleanup" procedure on top of my current installation? Ideally, I would like my system to look as if it had been installed at the SP3 level from the start.     - Diskeeper's Undelete & Xp Sp3 Is anyone having problems running Diskeeperâ??s Undelete package (build 127) with XP pro SP3? Iâ??m getting the Undelete error message â??Local Server Connection Failedâ?? when the RecoveryBin is accessed. The Undelete Service (udserve.exe) is running and getting through the firewall. I think the problem may have something to do with the addition of Network Access Protection (NAP) to sp3, even though I'm running as a standalone workstation. and can they be safely deleted?

way too much and most of them will be ZERO Size? yes you can delete them

Dear all,

I need a liitle help. I'm facing a problem with my pc, the main problem
caused by msi.dll & msiexec.exe (maybe more file) is missing from my pc. I've
try to download and install the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 but it
doesn't help. It makes me failed to launch many application from my pc. So my
pc is "half dead" now. Chould you guys pls help me?
