Hi all,
All of a sudden the screen on my monitor has started to blink, ie, the
screen goes black for about 2 seconds every 6 seconds. then the screen comes
back to normal. I can continue to work on the pc etc, but it is driving me
mad. I think it started when I was on the internet, and I thought that I
might have got a virus or something nasty, but I have scaned with Norton and
with a program from Microsoft, but they both said there was nothing nasty
found.
Can anyone give me a clue as to why this is happening and even better how I
might get rid of it please. Thanks a lot.

I should think the very first thing to try, after verifying that the
monitor's video cable is firmly attached to the PC, would be a new monitor.

Reboot but hit F8 before Windows load, or hit Del after the POST screen
to go into BIOS. Let the system sit. When in the console mode for the
F8 select screen or while sitting in the BIOS screen, does the monitor
still flash? If not, boot into Windows' Safe Mode. Does the monitor
blink then?

You can start by trying your monitor on a different computer and a different
monitor on your computer.

On this problem you and Bruce are as helpful as a rubber crutch. You have no
idea whether or not another monitor is available. Perhaps the OP lives on a
farm.
Why not get more info, such as does it occur with only the desktop displayed
(nothing running). What does the start folder
show in msconfig? What does task manager---processes show.

Nearly everyone I know has a computer monitor--why should I expect something
different in OP's case? Even if he lives on a farm, so what--he has
neighbors. Besides, he is not obligated to take our advice if it is too
much trouble to try it. Switching hardware parts is a valid method of
troubleshooting and its simple. And it is what I start with before I start
looking for complex software explanations.

Hi all,
Thanks for your assisstance. Vangard, The screen does not blink when in
Safe mode or BIOS. I have tried another monitor and it is doing the same
thing.
(How did unknown know I lived on a farm, that bod is awsome !!)

You have no diagnostic ability? Do you try a new battery if your car won't
start?
Switching parts without getting other info is absolutely ridiculous.
I had an auto dealer wanting to switch parts because my cruise control
didn't work. He quoted $650.
Use common sense when troubleshooting.

My approach would be to clear out your startup folder and reboot. If it
doesn't blink add one or two items back in at a time
till the blinking occurs. I.E. Try to find a possible program causing the
problem.

Use msconfig.exe to disable the startup items. This included utility
doesn't list all the startup items as does, say, SysInternals' AutoRuns,
but it is often sufficient to catch the beast that is romping around
uncontrollably in your silicon china shop when it's allowed to load on
Windows startup.

Do you work at being obnoxious or does it come naturally? What I suggested
would cost OP absolutely NOTHING and it will definitely rule out or confirm
a suspected hardware
problem with very little time invested. Just because you don't agree with
my valid suggestion does not give you a license to start taking potshots at
me. Concentrate on giving your own advice and give people the opportunity
to get more than one point of view.

I have to side with the person you've chosen to make your adversary
here, although I side against him also. Instead of playing
wanna-be-troll, you two should stick to giving information relevant to
the OP's post or go away and quit memorializing your stupidity and egos
in the Google et al archives for all posterity to see.
You're both more interested in power-plays and ego-displays than you
are helping anyone. All it'll get you is ignored and complete loss of
credibility.
You don't have to go away mad, just go away.

Hi Twayne

If you read my last post carefully, you will see that I said, in part,
almost the same thing you did. I have been posting in these newsgroups
since 1996 and when you make in excess of 86,000 posts--mistakes are
occasionally made. However, when I made one, I "fessed" up and apologized
for any trouble it may have caused. With this said, I am not about to let
somebody named Unknown take potshots at and call me names just because
he/she disagreed with a valid recommendation. There is no ego involved
here--remaining silent indicates to me that I agree with what is being said
and I most certainly don't. And you are wrong about me being interested in
power plays--that is typically reserved for trolls and younger,
inexperienced people who need their egos stroked. I am working on being 64
years old and I have been recognized by MS as being extra helpful to people
with 13 consecutive appointments as an MVP--MS does not give MVP awards to
trolls. The many thanks I have received over the years have provided all
the stroking I can handle :-)

Hope this clears the air a bit.

Regards

Ron Badour
MS MVP 1997 - 2008

Talk about displaying egos! Wow! an MVP since 1977. Go back and read my
original post to you. You're as helpful as a rubber crutch.

Yes, you did. But you also allowed yourself to be sucked into a silly
exchange of words, as I am allowing you to do to me this one time, with
your own potshot at your opponent.
In fact, I only chose to include you AFTER I'd reread the thread so I
wouldn't place undue credits.

> newsgroups since 1996 and when you make in excess of 86,000

I would consider that ego; it's not only irrelevant, the "title" means
little in reality and I could not care less how long you've had it. It
means nothing in the context of this thread. It's almost comedic to
think that you've actually COUNTED the number of posts you've made!

With
> this said, I am not about to let somebody named Unknown take potshots
> at and call me names just because he/she disagreed with a valid

I don't think there's a lot you can do about it. If I want to take a
potshot at you, I will. So will anyone else here. You do not have that
control and never will have. What you really need is a thicker skin and
improved interpersonal skills, perhaps rereac your creed again.

> recommendation. There is no ego involved here--remaining silent
> indicates to me that I agree with what is being said and I most
> certainly don't.

Your comments at times really make me doubt that your experience on
groups dates back to 1996; especially that one! 2006 maybe?
You know, by definition, that fits the ego def perfectly! I
seriously doubt that an advanced, experienced user would make such a
statement unless he thought he were talking privately to a newbie who
didn't know any better. And obviously there aren't many of those here.
And there's nothing private about any newsgroup.

And you are wrong about me being interested in
> power plays--that is typically reserved for trolls and younger,

I don't think so. I think I hit the nail on the head, based on your
response.

> inexperienced people who need their egos stroked.

There I disagree: I've found very few literal ewbies who want their
egos stroked. They talk more the way you are doing, in fact.

I am working on
> being 64 years old and I have been recognized by MS as being extra
> helpful to people with 13 consecutive appointments as an MVP--MS does
> not give MVP awards to trolls.

Actually, they do. They'll give them to anyone who appears to meet the
criteria. There are a few ex-MVPs here, as a matter of fact - so they
do also remove the "title" when it's warranted. Being an MVP makes a
singular statement about a person and their promises and a few
demonstrated talents; nothing more.

The many thanks I have received over
> the years have provided all the stroking I can handle :-)

That's good, because I wasn't about to stroke you here.
>
> Hope this clears the air a bit.

No air to clear. IMO you ran afoul of staying on topic, have an ego
problem, and think you can power push people who say what they're
thinking, away from you.

I've nothing further to say as I feel I've said everything I need to.
So respond all you want to save face; I've no intention of prolonging
this little attempt at powering your way into position. The ether is
yours.

Cheers,
