 - Taskbar and start menu properties box (not responding) in WinXPHom Recently I went in to customise a taskbar item in the "Task bar and start menu properties", clicked OK then Apply and clicked OK again, the box just froze. Had to click on the X to close box, another box comes up titled "Explorer.exe" and the comment was "This program is not responding". Clicked on OK to close this box. I thought this was a one off but tried several times and same things happens, ie the task bar menu box will not close off if I click on OK, but if I click cancel first the task bar menu box will close. This means that I can no longer make any changes in my task bar. I have Win XP Home SP2 with all the critical and non critical updates. Computer is self built and 7 months old. Have not installed any new programs for several months. Holding off on System Restore as I would like to know why this is happening.  - Updates won't install When I bought my computer, the installed OS was Windows 98. Later, I bought and installed the XP SP2 upgrade. This has served me well for a long time, but every time I decide to "clean" my machine, I first have to install W98 and then run the upgrade disk. Takes a long time, but it works. However, this may not be relevant. Recently, I had a problem which I hoped would be corrected if I re-installed W indows XP. I inserted the XP disk, and went through all the motions. Took about an hour. Everything seemed to be OK (except that it did not fix the problem I had hoped it would fix. But that's a different story). Now, the system continually tries to install updates. The little yellow shield at the bottom tells me "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates". When I click there, it tells me "Windows has found 85 updates". When I say "install", a panel tells me "Some updates could not be installed" and "The following updates were not installed" and it lists 84 updates (as nearly as I could count them). Belarc Advisor tells me that 81 Microsoft security updates are missing, and lists them all. Whatever I do, I seem to be unable to install these updates. Can anyone help me? It wouldn't have anything to do with that &*%$** Genuine Windows Advantage thing, would it? HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!!! _________________________________ Old Enough to know I don't know a thing ....  - "Open" box problem When I go to open a photo in a photo program, or attach a photo in an email program, the usual box opens up, where I can browse to the correct folder. Starting about a week ago, the files in the folders I look in are no longer in alphabetical order.  - why can't I see the printer from a workgroup Laptop on a domain PC? I have a laptop that is part of a Workgroup. I have a PC that belongs to my domain. I have a printer shared on the PC. The laptop can't see the printer on the PC. Other PCs can see the printer on the PC. The laptop can see printers on other PCs on the domain, but not the printer on this PC. If I use the wizard to add a printer and type in the path \\PC\Printer, I'm prompoted for a use name and password. I've tried entering my domain admin password and it tmes out saying it can't connect. I turned off the Firewall on both the PC and the laptop. Still no luck. In the wizard it will show me the domain and let me drill to the PC, but it won't let me drill into the PC to see the printer. I drilled into another PC on the domain and could see the printer, and was able to connect to the printer just fine. Didn't prompt me for a password or anything. I also enabled the Guest account on the PC thinking that might help, but no luck. I'm out of ideas. Can someone help me out? Thanks Kelvin Tag: program/document Tag: 190481

The original primary user folder in Explorer was set as Owner.  - AzMixerSel.exe not always loading at boot-up Equipment and relevant software: Acer Aspire 9500, Windows XP SP2, Realtek High Definition Audio. When the computer is cold booted sometimes there is a message "AzMixerSel.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.", hot rebooting usually temporarily resolves the problem. AZMixerSel.exe has been traced to the folder C:\Program Files\Realtek\ InstallShield, at the same time I noticed there is a second Realtek installshield folder located at C:\Program files\Realtek\Audio\InstallShield which does not have AzMixerSel.exe file.  - Reversed Show/Hide Hidden Toggle Problem XP Home SP2 Just recently cleaned out 2 instances of a Trojan Horse Generic 10JNM from my system and developed problems with no longer being able to view hidden files. Acer some Goggling for the problem, I came upon the registry key fix, "Navigate to, and select, this registry key in the left pane: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWAL". After applying the fix I am now able to view hidden files, but now another problem has surfaced. The toggle to SHOW and NOT TO SHOW now works in reverse. To view hidden files I now have to check the box Not to Show and to Hide the files, I now have to check the Show Hidden Files. Can anyone shed some light on this weird change and help to correct it if at all possible.  - Memory Test Stops Boot Is this the XP home or the Presario hardware that stops the boot up? Is this COMPAQ PRESARIO S5100NX 2.6 Ghz; MB (Mother board) broken? It stops at reboot with these 3 lines in the BIOS; 1. Award Medallion Biox v 6.0 2. REV 3.7 3. Intel Celeron 1600 Mhz Memory Test 1040448K + 8192 K Shared Memory It just hangs there. At the borron of the screen are 2 options; 1. Enter F1 for Setup. 2. Press Escape to skip Memory Test. Hitting F1 and/or the Esc key has no effect. Nothing happens. Both 512 RAM chips were removed. 2 other 256 RAM chips were tested. The original new Crucial 512 RAM chips were reinstalled. Nothing happens. Hitting F1 and/or the Esc key has no effect. PC Doctor test on MB and RAM memory tested OK. Would the last MS Windows Updates affect the Hardware / BIOS / Memory test ? Which MB test would you run on the MB ?  - Passwords I have just run software which analyses the hardware and software of a computer. I was surprised to see passwords to ISPs and Outlook Express accounts which, in use, are hidden by blobs. I already knew that it is very easy to discover passwords to MS Office files. Access to passwords probably goes much wider than this. Let this be a lesson.
