    - dos mem corrupt My machine's not coming out the boot sequence in either safe or normal or anything, XP Pro, SP2, Sempron 3400, 2 gig mem, Asus, Sata, erm... I try to run micro-scope diagnostics on it and can't as locks with the run-time error r6003 - divide by 0 message below it suggests PANIC MCB chain corrupted. The drive's ok it passes chkdsk (I set it before it got this bad, I could get into safe mode before I ran chkdsk, oddly) and it passes memtest with flying colours. I have a feeling the machine got messed up by the heat we had the other day. Any assistance gratefully received.     - How to access bluetooth capability hi, i am using Windows XP SP3 (on a macbook via VMware Fusion). I have a treo 750W that runs Windows Mobile 6.0. My macbook has bluetooth capability but i have no idea how to use that to sync my treo with the windows side of my machine. I have read a number of posts that suggest that if i go to control panel or network connections, i should find "Bluetooth Devices" but there is nothing there. there are also mentions of MS Bluetooth Stack but i have no idea if i have that already or need to download it and if the latter then from where.     - XP Pro hanging and it doesn't look pretty... Can't boot into XP Pro SP2 past the logon screen, it goes dark. This isn't the graphics issue that can do that, I already had that and this isn't it. Some history - I tried booting into safe, safe was fine. I ran chkdsk in safe, or asked it to run on next boot rather, now I can't get into safe either. If I boot into normal etc. I get chkdsk running all the way through. It finishes, reboots, says the disk's fine (phew!) and hangs. If I try to boot into safe then it hangs after press "esc to not load SPTD.EXE" I have a boot thingy with FreeDOS on it, that won't run either so I can't get to my files (sob!). I get error message PANIC mcb chain corrupted. Not too healthy, I'm thinking. What do we think then, team, do I have to go for some kind of Windows repair, get the XP CD out and hit repair, or maybe download that recovery console microsoft have got, burn that onto something and try it? I'd welcome any advice. It might be of note that some weeks back I installed a new graphics NVIDIA card and that the day the machine went wrong was the hottest day of the year, humid etc. Um. I'm wondering if some goodies aren't damaged in there. Mind, chkdsk does say encouraging things about the disk so maybe not...     - AVG 8.0 tray icon I upgraded to the free version of AVG 8.0. With the 7.5 edition there was an icon in the task bar. The Icon is no longer there with this new edition. Is there a way to put it there and have it stay there. I can go to my programs - AVG free 8.0 - and click on AVG Free tray Icon and it will send an icon to the task bar.     - Ugly desktop blobs around name of icons I'm not really a new user, but I always forget stuff when I have to set up again. New job, new user, My icons on the desktop have big ugly rectangles where the names of the icons are written.     - Sound and System Restore Problems, I think I used to have sound when visiting websites but not anymore and I can't figure out why. I have sounds when I play my Media Player and when the computer is turned on and off but not when I want to watch a video on, say, YouTube or a the news. I run Kaspersky Internet Security daily - I've cleaned my cache - runned Advanced Windows Care - but still no other sound.     - Which port to forward ? I've been trying to download something from RapidShare but the download often fails. A typical download session starts well ... over 50KB / S. Then it precipitates. Going down gradually to 40KB/s, 30KB/s, 20KB/s, 9KB/s, 3KB/s, 1KB/s and then it either hang, or stops. My PC links to the Net via a router, and my thinking is that perhaps, just perhaps, if I can forward the correct port to the router, downloading from RapidShare would be smoother. Now the question is, which port to forward? Regular downloading from website and from FTP doesn't seem to be a problem. Only when I try downloading via RapidShare or Megaupload that the precipitating effects take hold. Is there a special port that these file-sharing services use? If so, which port? Please help !!! All of a sudden, when I go to Start - they are not there. Over 6 months ago Norton Ghost stopped working. Norton said the version was so old they wouldn=92t support it so I uninstalled and deleted it. However it kept coming back. This led me to doubt Norton Antivirus so I tried install other anti-viruses but other anti virus programs but Norton Anti virus deleted them. Then I found that Norton antivirus could not be uninstalled. I tried support but they said they could do nothing. The problem was antivirus and ghost would reinstall the other program but I kept calling and found someone who agreed to help. He really wasn=92t supposed to. To be clear there was another department that was supposed uninstall my version of Norton anti-virus but they never answered the phone. It took nearly ten hours for customer service to remove both antivirus and ghost. The reason was Norton hides its files all over the hard drive and has to be uninstalled by hand. Ok so I get bit defender and elephant drive. They work great. Norton never ever worked as good as either program. Bit Defender gives me much more information and control in dealing with a virus. Elephant Drive actually worked unlike Ghost. Three days ago Elephant Drive stops working. I do all the erase and install stuff and make sure everything=92s right and then I chat with the Elephant Drive help. We go through everything again. Then we check the registry and it=92s a little strange but ok Then one last thing, a nested file for elephant drive, so down and down we go and hiding deep in an Elephant Drive file is Norton Ghost.     - Virtual Desktop Pain Hi all I just hooked a dell optiplex up to a 21" monitor and it has installed as a kind of virtual desktop display. I think that's what it's called when the image is effectively bigger than the physical screen size and you have to pan around the edges of the display to "see" all the desktop or application window.     - Taskbar and start menu properties box (not responding) in WinXPHom Recently I went in to customise a taskbar item in the "Task bar and start menu properties", clicked OK then Apply and clicked OK again, the box just froze. Had to click on the X to close box, another box comes up titled "Explorer.exe" and the comment was "This program is not responding". Clicked on OK to close this box. I thought this was a one off but tried several times and same things happens, ie the task bar menu box will not close off if I click on OK, but if I click cancel first the task bar menu box will close. This means that I can no longer make any changes in my task bar. I have Win XP Home SP2 with all the critical and non critical updates. Computer is self built and 7 months old. Have not installed any new programs for several months. Holding off on System Restore as I would like to know why this is happening.     - Updates won't install When I bought my computer, the installed OS was Windows 98. Later, I bought and installed the XP SP2 upgrade. This has served me well for a long time, but every time I decide to "clean" my machine, I first have to install W98 and then run the upgrade disk. Takes a long time, but it works. However, this may not be relevant. Recently, I had a problem which I hoped would be corrected if I re-installed W indows XP. I inserted the XP disk, and went through all the motions. Took about an hour. Everything seemed to be OK (except that it did not fix the problem I had hoped it would fix. But that's a different story). Now, the system continually tries to install updates. The little yellow shield at the bottom tells me "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates". When I click there, it tells me "Windows has found 85 updates". When I say "install", a panel tells me "Some updates could not be installed" and "The following updates were not installed" and it lists 84 updates (as nearly as I could count them). Belarc Advisor tells me that 81 Microsoft security updates are missing, and lists them all. Whatever I do, I seem to be unable to install these updates. Can anyone help me?     - "Open" box problem When I go to open a photo in a photo program, or attach a photo in an email program, the usual box opens up, where I can browse to the correct folder.     - why can't I see the printer from a workgroup Laptop on a domain PC? I have a laptop that is part of a Workgroup. I have a PC that belongs to my domain. I have a printer shared on the PC. The laptop can't see the printer on the PC. Other PCs can see the printer on the PC. The laptop can see printers on other PCs on the domain, but not the printer on this PC. If I use the wizard to add a printer and type in the path \\PC\Printer, I'm prompoted for a use name and password. I've tried entering my domain admin password and it tmes out saying it can't connect. I turned off the Firewall on both the PC and the laptop. Still no luck. In the wizard it will show me the domain and let me drill to the PC, but it won't let me drill into the PC to see the printer. I drilled into another PC on the domain and could see the printer, and was able to connect to the printer just fine. Didn't prompt me for a password or anything. I also enabled the Guest account on the PC thinking that might help, but no luck. I'm out of ideas. Can someone help me out? Running XP Pro on a thinkpad, and I notice that sometimes after the
laptop has been on for some time, if I go to move one of the desktop
icons they are locked in place. A righ-click on desktop shows that
they are not locked in place. A reboot cures the problem.

Anyone know what causes this? Would McAfee anti-virus cause this?
