I'm running Windows XP home. Yesterday I had a system failure while running
Windows Media Player ( system hung up) and had to shut system off manually.
When the system came back up the Volume control Icon on the task bar was
missing. How do I get it back?

Dick, try going to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices. Check the box
Place Audio
Icon in Taskbar. Click Apply, Ok.

Right click the start button, select properties. On the Taskbar and Start
menu click on Taskbar tab then click Customize opposite the Hide inactive
icons.

On the Customize Notification locate the Volume icon and click on it to
select it then under Behavior select Always show.

If the above didn't help try system restore before what happened.
