    - Usuer Account I have just set up a user account for my wife. I am using Windows XP Home Edition SP2. This was done yesterday and everything worked absolutely fine. Today when logging on, a log on dialogue box appeared saying "The security log on this system is full. Only adminstrators can log on to fix this" Okay, I'm the administrator but how do I fix this?     - "autochk cannot be found" goes into startup loop. recovery control comp wont start--goes into startup loop after "autochk cannot be found--skipping autocheck" started up recovery console as far as command prompts--but not sure what to do from here?!!? tried "fixmbr" and said---caution---this computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid masterboot record; but then has an ominous warning about losing files/partions,etc---scared me off. any ideas??? thanks in advance!     - Windows XP, Home Networking, IE7 I have 2 computers that a both using XP attached to a cheap unmanaged hub which is then connected to Rogers Modem. Both computers can access the internet. Computer 2 can access the printer attached to Computer 1. But they cannot see each other. I have shared the C: drives on both computers but it just wont work. Worth noting.     - Need Help Reinstalling MS Works 4.5 My Packard Bell Win98 came with MS Works 4.5 pre-installed,and for reasons unknown, some of the functions are not longer working. when I attempt to reinstall it with the setup.exe file, located in the MS Works folder, it ask me to insert the MS Works cdrom. The only disk that I have that came with this pc is a Packard Bell Companion CD disk and the Master Recovery Disk. The Companion CD contains the initial Win98 installation files. I upgraded to Win98 SE (have that CD disk also)sometime ago. Which one of these disk would I go about locating the necessary re-installation file(s) and how would I go about it? I don't want to reinstall the entire system, just the MS Works application.     - Unable to log you on because of an account restriction I received a message after I had run a registry cleaner and the system had rebooted that I needed a password to enter and had I forgotten it. I had done a restore point prior to running the cleaner. There were no passwords on the computer for administrator or profile prior to this. Originally when the system restarted it would come on to the desktop. Now it is asking for passwords to enter for either administrator or profile. I ran "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, Bootdisk / CD" to remove passwords and unlock the accounts. When I rebooted after this I get the message above. I have restarted in safe mode also with no difference. How can I get into my computer again? I have been trying for almost a week now with no luck. The OS is Windows XP Pro.     - reinstalling windows xp H I, this is whisky how can download windows xp,without losing all of the web sites and other stuff i have on my pc.     - MS Live OneCare Security Scanner: Credible Alternatives? Please Help I have gradually been pruning out my bloatware and my MS ware as much as I could, and recently canned the MS Windows firewall in favor of the PC Tools Fiirewall. That leaves me with one last remaining dependency: I use the MS Live OneCare Sec. Scan a lot because it reveals problems and can also help to cure them. Like fragmentation and excess userless files. Would someone please suggest something along the lines of the MS Live OneCare Sec. Scan, online, but a whole lot better--doing similar deep scans and deep fixes better than MS does?     - How do I create a password protected zip file? (#8730) If you have Windows XP: 1. Using Windows Explorer, locate the first file you want to zip. 2. Right click on the file and select "Send To" and "Compressed (zipped) Folder." This will create a new compressed folder with the same name as the file, except with the extension .zip. 3. Right click any other file you want to compress and select "Copy." 4. Right click on the compressed folder you created in step 2 and select "Paste." The copied file was pasted into the compressed folder. Repeat this until your compressed folder contains all the files you want. 5. Right click on the compressed folder and select "Explore." 6. In "File," select "Add a Password." Enter the password and confirm the password.     - Hard Drive I currently have XP and I want to plan toward the day when I get a new PC with Vista. I have been thinking of getting an external hard drive to back-up my files as an insurance against a failure of the existing PC (happened to me once). However, I am wondering if an additional internal will be better and cheaper. If I get a new PC I could swap it over. Any views?     - Security center has been turned off? How do you turn it back on? HI all, Until I get to my mothers house, after work, this is all the information I have to go one rite now.. Gateway PC, Win XP SP2, pentium 4; 3.2GHz, 1 gig ram... Not much to go on, and I am hoping that this is all youz guyz may need.... The problem: She first noticed that her Norton Internet Security 08 icon wasn't loading, I told her to reboot the PC, and it turned back on. Then I told her to check the security center to see what that looks like.... I'll be the first to admit it may not be the next best option to go to next, but I didn't want to frustrate things.. Well as it turns out there is a 3 line text at the top that says, basically, that the security center service has either been stopped or turned off, and is no longer active. Automatic updates shows that it is working, Norton says it is all secure... But the firewall had been turned off.. I won't be able to get to the PC till about 6pm central time, USA.     - Multiple Virus Scanners: AEC Trustport: Similar freeware: Help I ran into an article which mentioned AEC Trustport in Informationb Week, how it allowed for several virus search engines to work without conflicts. The trustport platform licenced other anti-virus engines to work in this wise: one was going real time, and others were going on demand. Generally the received wisdom is that virus scans conflict with one another and the system is at best a hash and at worst a crash. Trustport has a platform to remove this issue. I contacted their support and requested a freeware version. No- go, they do not have one, have no plans to make one. Fine, but here are my questions: (1) is there software which would allow me to use a software "toggle switch" so to speak, and turn on a real time virs scanner and at the same time turn off an on demand virus scanner, maybe several of them?; (2) is there any rare or obsolete freeware which will allow the use of more than one virus scan? Yes, some will say, they get along fine with three, but I disagree. Could anyone advise me of how to get, say, AVG and Zone Alarm and some others, all freeware virus scans, to coexist and not conflict on my PC, if I run them--NOT concurrently, but in succession. Maybe,hypothetically, AVG virus scan as a real time scanner and Zone Alarm on demand, and two others on demand, hypothetically. Then maybe I want to make Zone Alarm the real time scanner, etc. etc. Got the idea? Someone please advise or help if you have the freeware to do it. I thank you very much.     - My Sound Just Stopped...I Don't Know Why What happened: My computer suddenly has no sound. When did I first notice this: Just a few hours ago. Up until then, I had sound working just fine. Did I do something dumb?: I don't think I did. I have not downloaded a thing. My system: Windows XP Home with SP-2. 768MB of SDRAM. 291GB of hard drive. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4550. I have and scan daily with AVG anti-virus, AdAware, Spybot S&D, CWShredder, Spyware Blaster. I also have the free Zone Alarm firewall installed and running. I have a high speed Cox Communications internet connection. Symptoms: The speaker icon in my system tray has disappeared. I cannot get sound with external speakers or headphones. My computer will not play music CD's but will allow me to access data (only) CD's and/or DVD's. In Device Manager, there are no red "X"'s or exclamation points in yellow balls. When I check the properties of everything under the Sound, Video and Game controllers, everything is reported as working properly. I cannot check my system sounds. They don't work, either. Under Sounds and Audio Devices Properties (Control Panel applet), under Volume everything is greyed out and the words "No Audio Device" appear next to the speaker icon near the top of the tab. In the Hardware tab, every entry, next to Device Status, indicates the same thing: This device is working properly. What I have tried, so far: I attempted to uninstall all my audio codecs. The computer won't allow me. I did manage to get one codec to uninstall - the Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device. When I rebooted, it reinstalled itself but it hasn't helped. I have unplugged and re-plugged in the headphones. Didn't help. I thought to look in MSCONFIG, but didn't see anything which might effect my sound having stopped. I checked the Creative Labs web site for any updated Soubd Blaster drivers. I allowed Creative Labs to perform an automated search of my computer. The results came back that my computer has the most recent SB drivers installed and operating correctly. What I would like: To get my sound back!     - Install XP with different product key code? I'm doing some volunteer work for an organization that supplies used/refurbished computers to homeless shelters. Part of that work involves upgrading the OS (say from Windows 98) and upgrading Office as well. In trying to work on a group of PCs today I discovered the XP disk could not be read by the PCs. Looking at the disk, the problem was a crack running through part of the disk rendering it unreadable. This is a disk supplied by MicroSoft to the organization for the purpose we are using it for. We have the proper product key codes as well but we can't use the disk. My guess is the disk has been used so many times that in handling it someone cracked it. Can I use another XP disk to install the OS but use the product key code assigned to the organization by MS for the cracked CD? Perhaps something in the installation files of the XP disk is looking for a specific product key. In this case, entering a different, but valid, key would not work. Does anyone know?     - Boot to Welcome Screen Problem Normally my Win XP Prof system boots to the welcome screen then immediately goes to the desktop.     - Pirated XP Pro explanation For those who have answered and shot me full of bullets...My so called computer friend told me that since the operating system was pirated, I needed to buy an upgrade to make it right. So that is what I did, but was told to buy the wrong one. What I bought is Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Upgrade, but it is for users of Windows 98 or Millennium and not XP Pro. My mistake since I know nothing about what I'm doing. My niece that sold me the computer with the bad operating system admitted after the fact that the system was pirated, but it was too late...too bad. I had never dealt with her before and had no reason to believe that she would do this to me. My mistake again! All I'm trying to accomplish here is to find a resolution. I am not advocating anything connected to pirating again. I notified Microsoft of the problem and asked them for suggestions and evidently it fell on deaf ears, because they have never responded other than verifying that they got my request. Meanwhile, Wal Mart will not take the software back because the box is now open and they claim that Microsoft will not allow them to take it back because it is a copyright violation...meaning that they have no way of knowing if I copied he disc or not. I feel that I have spent honest money for an operating system that will not work and I'm trying to mitigate the damages to my wallet without making the same mistake again.     - XP Pro pirated copy Can someone help me? I have asked Microsoft this question before and they will not answer me...I bought a used lap top from a family member and the operating system (XP Pro) turns out to be pirated. My niece (the seller) says oh well! So I bought XP Upgrade at a suggestion from a friend and it will not load into the computer because it seems that I was told to buy the wrong upgrade.     - Two part question: SYSTRAY & need help with BAT or SCRIPT Hello, I have a video game that will only run if I shut down all BUT the SYSTRAY and EXPLORER.EXE processes, so I've been told by Tech Support. The first question is this: If you look at the running processes, what is the actual IMAGE NAME of SYSTRAY? I don't see anything in there that says SYSTRAY. As I said earlier, the only way to make the game run is to delete all of the process except the aforementioned two. As you can imagine, it is very tedious to sit there and delete all of the undesired processes one-by-one. So my second question is this: Is there a way to write a BAT file so that I can get only the above mentioned processes to load? If you have a better idea on how to approach this (instead of using a BAT file), like a script (or whatever), I'm all ears. I have ADMIN rights to this PC, also.     - I want to Switch from MS Firewall to Zone Alarm: Advise. I have a Dell Dimension 300 with XP 95 and i have loaded it with SP3 candidate. I think I am on Windows 7. I get high speed DSL from Qwest over what amounts to a telephone line, from a wall-telephone socket. My question is concerning some Microsoft software, namely the firewall. I am considering changing to the Zone Alarm firewall from the one which came equipped with the Microsoft os. First, is there any huge complaint with the Zone Alarm firewall that i should bear in mind before a switch? Second, I have never changed firewalls before. As i conceive of things, I will download the Zone Alarm, and then disconnect from the Internet by unplugging the telephone line I use for the computer only. Then turn off the MS firewall and then turn on the Zone Alarm firewall, and then re-connect to the Internet. I hope that way to avoid viruses et al. If this is correct, please: Advise. Third, is it as easy as turning off the MS firewall? Or do i need to use a lot of key strokes to adjust things ? If so, can someone tell me the key strokes needed beyond turning off the MS firewall. Yes, I know very well where the security center is and can turn off the firewall. I can do that, and is that the end, or are there a lot of further key strokes to do? Advise, please.     - Can't change user icons, even though I have administrator access. Did a new install of Windows XP. Have installed all current patches. On the logon screen, all user icons are the same, even though I have changed mine to something else. If I try to change any of the other user icons, I get a "access denied" error.     - Running Malicious Malware Remover, Defender and Live One Scanner I have a Dell Dimension 300 with XP 95 and i have loaded it with Office SP3. My question is concerning some Microsoft applications: the Malicious Malware Removal Tool, the Windows Defender, and the Live One Free Scanner. I DO NOT desire to have the full Live One Security service because I have a real time spyware and virus scanner from Google Pack: Spyware Doctor and Norton Virus Scan going real time.     - Gulp, my XP Home \Windows\Windows32\Config\System file is no more! The Subject line tells the short story which came about as part of rebooting blindly when I couldn't see anything on the monitor (I'd changed the monitor) and it has now broken or mislaid the system file. It is a TIME computer as so I have the TIME BACKUP disk and a DRIVERS disk. The BACKUP disk replaced a few files (not user selected) but to no avail and I am stuck with my only known route, to format the disk - because that is what this disk does! My machine has always had Restore points made but I don't know how to extract the correct file. I have tried issuing commands at the C prompt but it doesn't recognise CHKDSK for example and so I don't know where else to go (DIR is OK). Please advise if any ideas. N.B. The computer is on a network and I have also considered simply putting the ATA disk into another VISTA computer (with Serial ATA) to see if it can search for the replacement file (if I can find out how to stop Autorun on the BACKUP disk) and repair or replace as nec.     - Unable to connect to certain sites which are known working IP's Whenever I attempt to connect to certain sites, like www.qrz.com or some other sites related to Ham Radio, the browser just sits there and eventually you get an error message saying the server has timed out, or to try again later or my network is not working. None of these are the problem. I tried on 4 different computers on our home network, same response. I went to the Ham Radio newsgroups for help, and all replies said the sites are working just fine. One fellow replied, wondering if my HOST file was "pooched". I looked up HOST file in Google and mine looked normal just like the defalut one, but I deleted it anyway by adding the extension "txt" as suggested in the article, no change. I then deleted it altogether, no change. I then looked up the IP address of QRZ.COM, (199.245.125.1) and tried to ping it. Well, it never did connect, saying the packets were lost. Anyway, can anyone suggest what might be happening? I never experienced this before. Using Windows XP Pro, McAfee Internet Security (firewall is not stopping anything as I turned it off, and the other computers on network are not running firewalls).     - Two questions before I reinstall XP Since I am having various problems with software, I am going to first try to do a repair on XP. If that doesn't work, I will do a full reinstallation. 1) Does a Windows reinstall (ideally) preserve everthing but the OS, or does it wipe the C drive clean? 2) As a back up, can I copy my documents, emails, itunes, etc. to my D (second hard drive). Should something go wrong, will they be safe there, or will the D drive also be wiped out? I guess another option would be to physically remove the D drive. (I have cable select vs master and slave if that makes a difference). 3) For the XP transfer wizard, can I select the D drive as the old PC?     - Desktop folders vanished leaving just text names This is a Windows XP Pro with Office Word 2007 All folders on desktop have disappeared and I am left with just the text name. Double clicking on these produces the contents wherein some show perfectly normal folders alongside other vanished ones with just the text name. Also, the blue bar, which has suddenly expanded to twice its height, (not sure of correct name) along the base of the window shows blank squares when I move the mouse arrow along it but no identity names or the special icons for each shortcut (i.e. Outlook Express, Google Earth, etc.) I have not wittingly done anything different today in accessing internet connection or opening any file. I have had to use the main switch to turn off the computer as clicking on Log Off or Turn Off Computer does nothing but make the text "quiver". I have a new computer with Vista on it. I installed office 2007. When ever I
go to do almost anything, I get "Not Responding", then it trys to save my
work. I have had "Office Diagnostics" run. Everything seemed to check out,
but no solutions were found. I also ran a virus scan, and came up with none.

I also have noticed that the clock looses 3 hours every now and then.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
