    - Memory Test Stops Boot Is this the XP home or the Presario hardware that stops the boot up? Is this COMPAQ PRESARIO S5100NX 2.6 Ghz; MB (Mother board) broken? It stops at reboot with these 3 lines in the BIOS; 1. Award Medallion Biox v 6.0 2. REV 3.7 3. Intel Celeron 1600 Mhz Memory Test 1040448K + 8192 K Shared Memory It just hangs there. At the borron of the screen are 2 options; 1. Enter F1 for Setup. 2. Press Escape to skip Memory Test. Hitting F1 and/or the Esc key has no effect. Nothing happens. Both 512 RAM chips were removed. 2 other 256 RAM chips were tested. The original new Crucial 512 RAM chips were reinstalled. Nothing happens. Hitting F1 and/or the Esc key has no effect. PC Doctor test on MB and RAM memory tested OK. Would the last MS Windows Updates affect the Hardware / BIOS / Memory test ? Which MB test would you run on the MB ?     - Windows Installer 3.1 -Just did a clean install of Windows XP Pro. â?? 2. Downloaded 99 updates but none will install. First update on the list is Windows Installer 3.1. ( KB893803) When I look at â??Add/Remove programs, Windows Installer 3.1 is listed, but in the â??Sizeâ?? column on the right hand side, no size is shown. Question: How can I tell for sure if this thing is actually installed? Shouldnâ??t everything thatâ??s installed show something in the â??Sizeâ?? Column?     - Passwords I have just run software which analyses the hardware and software of a computer. I was surprised to see passwords to ISPs and Outlook Express accounts which, in use, are hidden by blobs. I already knew that it is very easy to discover passwords to MS Office files. Access to passwords probably goes much wider than this. Let this be a lesson. You may not have a file containing all your passwords for someone to steal your information. It is already on the computer just waiting to be harvested, possibly remotely! This strengthens the argument for removing and destroying the hard disk(s) of any computer before disposing of unwanted computers.     - Hibernating Hi I have hibernation permitted on my computer, and I use it quite often. Recently, though, when it has started up out of hibernation, it is with the administrator logon, and not mine, and mine is not available.. If I restart on shutdown, it also comes back as administrator, and my logon is again not available. How can I work round this, as it is very frustrating having to shut down the computer every time I want to start it up!     - Pressing "R" for repair in startup I have a corrupt or missing file as noted in the message "windows will not start because the following file is missing or corrpupt :\windows\system32\config\system I have tried booting from the XP startup disc but at the Welcome to startup blue screen when I press "R" for repair the computer just shuts down again.     - Sound Problem I've XP sp2 with MS Automatic Critical Updates, AVG, SpywareBlaster & MS Firewall. Recently I only get Windows start-up and shut-down sounds, perfectly, through my speakers. I get NO sound from CD player or Media Player. I had not added nor removed any hardware or software. Device Manager shows devices working properly. However, Control Panel - Sound & Audio Devices Properties shows "NO Audio device", everything is greyed out. I've checked speaker connections, checked sound card insertion in mother board & connections, checked volume knob on speakers, checked BIOS, uninstalled devices and restarted XP and re-installed devices. I've used the XP sound troubleshooter to no avail. I'd be most grateful for advice to cure something which probably has a very simple solution.     - Real Player I have tried to update Real Player 10 with Real Player 11. When that failed I uninstalled and re-installed Real Player 11 with the same result. I then uninstalled Real Player 11 and tried to install Real Player 10. This results in an error message "You currently do not have Administrator access to the Windows Registry. Please see your Administrator to install Real Player". I have also tried booting up as Administrator but still get the same error message. I really wish I hadn't tried to upgrade and I really do need Real Player. I have also cleaned the registry with Registry Mechanic. The fix at http://real.lithium.com/real/board/message?board.id=realplayer&message.id=18156 has the same result. Can anyone shed some light on the cause of this problem and, better still, offer a fix?     - Unable to open some web sites I'm running IE7 with Windows XP. I was away for a week 3/28/08 to 4/4/08 and left my system on since I returned I am unable to open some web sites that I have been using in the past. I get the error message stating IE cannot display the webpage. this only happens on some sites. In some cases I am able get to the web site OK but when I try to access my accounts it fails. I have called the Account company's and they can access the account without error, indicating the problem is my system. Has IE 7 been updated while I was away and causing this problem?     - XP Installation problems- please help! I have a laptop which was runnning Windows 2000 and I'm trying to install Windows XP on it. I did manage to get it on but I must have made some mistake somewhere as on startup it was giving me the option to boot into either XP or Windows 2000. Before explaining the current status I should just explain exactly what I'd like to acheive ideally. One hard drive (C) with the full amount of storage space (10GB) running Windows XP. That's it! Nothing more, nothing less. So I have tried to do a few things- deleting partition, re-installing XP and now I'm really confused! When I startup now, I get 3 choices from the boot screen: Windows XP Home Edition Windows 2000 Professional Windows XP Setup If I select Windows XP Home Edition it says: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. COuld not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documemntation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. If I select Windows 2000 Professional it gets me into Windows 2000. If I go to Computer Management>Disk Management there it reads: C: 5GB FAT32 - Primary Partition Unallocated 4.36GB Right-clicking on either of these doesn't give me an option to either delete or format. If I try Windows XP Home Edition Setup it says: Welcome to Setup To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER Insert the CD labeled Windows XP Home Edition CD ROM I then put in the disk and press enter. I then get the following screen: The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer 9586MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MPR] C: Partition1 (VAIONOTE) [FAT32] 5122MB 979MB free Unpartioned space 4463MB If I press 'D' on C, it says: Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the slected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation. 'D' doesn't work on the unpartitioned space. If try to set up on C, it says: The partition you have chosen is too full to contain Windows XP which requires a drive with at least 1033MB of free disk space. I also have the following options: To repair a Windows XP intallation using Recovery Console, press R To quite Setup without installing Windows XP press F3 So, what do I do????!!!     - Problem opening a picture in an email I have two computers, each using Outlook Express 6 and WindowsXP Home. On each I tried opening a picture embedded in an email by right clicking the picture and selecting Save As. On computer 1, the file opens "Save Picture" and allows a normal save as JPEG. On computer 2, I get an error message. "Can't find the file specified". The help button identifies the missing file as c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp I checked both computers' folders and find that each contains two files: mshtml.dll and mshtml.tlb.     - Help -- My display type and icons are HUGE I was trying to install "incredimail" (an email system), but it looked like it was going to take up too much space so after installing it, I removed it to the recycle bin. Then when I restarted my computer later -- HUGE fonts, HUGE icons, HUGE screens -- I did try the "appearance" option but that didn't do a thing. It says mky font size is normal. I tried clicking on that again. Nothing. I tried changing the font size there to "large" and nothing happened. I read somewhere else about restoring -- should I try that? How do I do that?     - Installing new memoy / problem I have a Dell E310 running XP Media Edition. It came with 512M RAM and I've been trying for months now to upgrade. Dell tells me that I need DDR2 5300. I ordered three times from Crucial and each time as soon as I try to get into Windows I get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). The most recent BSOD at the very bottom says: ialmdnt5.dll-address BF022387 base at BF0200000, Date Stamp 42dd45cb. There's lots more; I have a picture to send of the screen if anyone thinks they have an idea on what may be wrong. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. XP is fully up to date with SP2 and all subsequent updates. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect remotely to the server. 2. I set up a printer, and printed successfully to the XP printer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Although everything worked exactly as I wanted, the snag is that sdildp is on a 30-day trial. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. 4. I attempted to configure a printer, setting up an LPR port on 192.168.x.x. This failed, with the long error message stating that it could go no further. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" did not connect remotely to the server, and timed out. 2. Wireshark on the XP machine confirmed that the telnet connect request from the Linux machine did reach the XP machine, but the server did not respond in any way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOTTOM LINE: I am mystified as to why I cannot configure the printer on the XP machine, and why local telnet requests to the server work on the XP, but do not work across the LAN, even though I have already proved there is nothing wrong with the LAN connectivity.     - Windows XP pro OEM Hi I have just bought a new computer, with Windows XP Professional pre-installed, and I have sold my previous computer, which I had upgraded to XP pro. Obviously, I sold it with the upgrade disc. I have managed to find the number for my current copy of XP, but what do I do if I need to re-install XP, which happened on the previous computer? I am running XP Professional SP2 with 1 GB RAM on a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop. Most of my computer work is related to my photography profession. Naming files (& copying/moving them) in Windows Explorer is a major, required part of my work (I have over 10,000 photo files). However, recently Windows Explorer wonâ??t allow long filenames (e.g., over 12 characters). I frequently get a message that a filename is invalid or too long, even though I have been using/copying filenames equal or longer (e.g., 30+ characters) for the past two years. Also, when I try to copy/move an existing file (with a long filename) from one folder to another, Windows Explorer freezes & an error message indicates that it has â??encountered a problem & must shut downâ??. With regard to malware, I regularly use programs for detecting viruses (CAâ??s eTrust EZ Antivirus) plus CAâ??s spam control, the Microsoft â??Malicious Software Removal Toolâ??, ad-ware, etc. Please advise! Naming files (& copying/moving them) in Windows Explorer is a major, required part of my work (I have over 10,000 photo files). However, recently Windows Explorer wonâ??t allow long filenames (e.g., over 12 characters). I frequently get a message that a filename is invalid or too long, even though I have been using/copying filenames equal or longer (e.g., 30+ characters) for the past two years. Also, when I try to copy/move an existing file (with a long filename) from one folder to another, Windows Explorer freezes & an error message indicates that it has â??encountered a problem & must shut downâ??. With regard to malware, I regularly use programs for detecting viruses (CAâ??s eTrust EZ Antivirus) plus CAâ??s spam control, the Microsoft â??Malicious Software Removal Toolâ??, ad-ware, etc. Please advise! My Outlook Express often stalls out but this may be an interaction with my MalWare suite (CA Security Center). I have tried to install the most recent Google Earth but the install stalled out.     - Dual Boot With Win98 Hi, I need to use some software that an only operate on Win98. Thus I did a dual boot on my computer. One problem I encountered is that Win98 does not recognise any RAM more than 768MB and returned an error.
