Mouse Freezes Up

I have a 6-year old WinXP desktop that has been running perfectly since I
bought it. It has the original Logitech M-BD58 mouse. Now, about once a day,
when I go to close any program...whether it be Notepad, Firefox, OE, etc.,
the mouse pointer will freeze. There seems to be hard drive activity going
on during this period, but the pointer never frees up. I have to reboot the
system to restore functionality. Any idea where to start diagnosing this
problem?

It may not have anything to do with the mouse but since that's an easy first
step, uninstall the Logitech mouse software and try a different mouse.

Malke,

OK, I'll try that. By the way, I should mention that about the same time this
problem started, I would occasionally hear that "bong" sound that plays when a
USB device is connected or unconnected...even though there was no USB device
being plugged in or unplugged at the time. This is something new. It's never
happened in the past. Is this related?

Probably, but I don't know. Troubleshooting has to be systematic, trying one
thing at a time and testing after each change. I suggested removing the
Logitech software/drivers and using a different mouse as a first step. Do
this and test afterwards. If that doesn't solve the issue, we go onto
something else.

Malke,

I don't think it's the mouse. It hasn't frozen lately. The only quirk now is
that once or twice a day, I hear the "bong" sound that you hear when a USB device
is detected. It bongs once, and one second later, it bongs again. The mouse freezes
during this short period. It sounds like the system thinks it's detecting a USB
device, even though none is being hooked up.

Any clues?

Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

It certainly does sound like something is going on with your USB ports. What
other USB devices do you have attached?

Malke,

I checked eventvwr.msc, and there were no errors showing recently. While I was
checking it, the USB connection "bong" sounded, and a second later, it sounded
again (just as it would if something were disconnecting). After hitting refresh,
no error showed up under eventvwe.msc. I haven't changed any hardware or software
recently. I do connect an external hard drive for backup every week, but it never
causes any problems. I also do an Activesync with my smartphone every week. I'll
try unplugging that cable for now. Any idea why the system may think there's a USB
connection
being made?

I've heard of other people having a similar problem, with the USB "bong"
sound going off, but I really don't know why it happens. Sure, try
unplugging any extra USB cables and see if that helps.
