    - Help -- My display type and icons are HUGE I was trying to install "incredimail" (an email system), but it looked like it was going to take up too much space so after installing it, I removed it to the recycle bin. Then when I restarted my computer later -- HUGE fonts, HUGE icons, HUGE screens -- I did try the "appearance" option but that didn't do a thing. It says mky font size is normal. I tried clicking on that again. Nothing. I tried changing the font size there to "large" and nothing happened. I read somewhere else about restoring -- should I try that? How do I do that?     - Installing new memoy / problem I have a Dell E310 running XP Media Edition. It came with 512M RAM and I've been trying for months now to upgrade. Dell tells me that I need DDR2 5300. I ordered three times from Crucial and each time as soon as I try to get into Windows I get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). The most recent BSOD at the very bottom says: ialmdnt5.dll-address BF022387 base at BF0200000, Date Stamp 42dd45cb. There's lots more; I have a picture to send of the screen if anyone thinks they have an idea on what may be wrong. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.     - Help please: cannot print using lpd I want to print files from a Linux (SuSE 10) system to an XP Home system with an HP printer attached. XP is fully up to date with SP2 and all subsequent updates. First, this is what *does* work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the XP PC (192.168.x.x): ---------------------------------------- 1. I installed sdilpd.exe (<http://www.bmtmicro.com/BMTCatalog/win/sdilpd.html> and set up the printer queue. 2. "netstat -a" confirmed that lpd was listening on port 515. 3. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect remotely to the server. 2. I set up a printer, and printed successfully to the XP printer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Although everything worked exactly as I wanted, the snag is that sdildp is on a 30-day trial. Looking for an alternative approach, I discovered belatedly that XP appears to have built-in lpd support, so I uninstalled sdilpd and then did the following: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the XP PC: -------------------- 1. I set up the lpd server (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services). 2. "netstat -a" confirmed that lpd was listening on port 515. 3. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. 4. I attempted to configure a printer, setting up an LPR port on 192.168.x.x. This failed, with the long error message stating that it could go no further. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" did not connect remotely to the server, and timed out. 2. Wireshark on the XP machine confirmed that the telnet connect request from the Linux machine did reach the XP machine, but the server did not respond in any way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOTTOM LINE: I am mystified as to why I cannot configure the printer on the XP machine, and why local telnet requests to the server work on the XP, but do not work across the LAN, even though I have already proved there is nothing wrong with the LAN connectivity.     - Windows XP pro OEM Hi I have just bought a new computer, with Windows XP Professional pre-installed, and I have sold my previous computer, which I had upgraded to XP pro. Obviously, I sold it with the upgrade disc. I have managed to find the number for my current copy of XP, but what do I do if I need to re-install XP, which happened on the previous computer? However, recently when I try to copy/move a file from one folder to another, the program freezes & an error message indicates that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem & must shut down. In addition, I frequently get a message that a filename is invalid or too long, even though I have been using/copying filenames equal or longer (e.g., 30+ characters) for the past two years. Reducing the filename to a small number of characters (e.g., a dozen or less), & including a small number of files at one time, does allow the above procedures to be completed without a freeze. With regard to possible malicious invasions, I regularly use programs for detecting viruses, CAâ??s pest control, Microsoftâ??s â??Malicious Software Removal Toolâ??, spam, ad-ware, etc. Please advise!     - Explorer 7 Sorry about posting here but can't find a IE7Group. Went to see a friend tonight. I suggested he checked his cache size - we tried to do it but the Tools would not open. It merely flashed for a split second. In Control Panel the usual "Internet Options" had no title and wouldn't open. Any pointers for a simple fix.     - Aging XP I have a 4 years old laptop with WinXP/2. Things have started to go wrong. My Outlook Express often stalls out but this may be an interaction with my MalWare suite (CA Security Center). I have tried to install the most recent Google Earth but the install stalled out. Google Earth installed OK on my tower (XP) and on my wife's Vista laptop. These are just 2 examples. Question. Is it possible to reinstall XP from my distribution CDs which came with the laptop without loosing my settings or installed programs?     - Dual Boot With Win98 Hi, I need to use some software that an only operate on Win98. Thus I did a dual boot on my computer. One problem I encountered is that Win98 does not recognise any RAM more than 768MB and returned an error. I followed the steps in the following article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184447 but it does not seems to help at all. I'm running 2GB of RAM and I dpn't wish to keep taking my RAM in and out of my computer each time I sitch between WinXP and Win98. I hope someone can advise me on this. Create an "image" backup suitable for completely restoring to a new hard disk in the event of the original's failure 2. Also says "Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed." I searched my computer for "Winsock base providers: 2 and don't find anything. Google "Winsock" don't tell tell me anything about base providers: 2, but tells me there should be at least 10 entrys in my Winsock file. This Dell WinXP PC is ultra slow. 32-bit SCANDISK reports "Windows was unable to complete the task" DOS CHKDSK fixes 2 corrupt attribute records but then "cannot continue in read-only mode." Absolutely nothing. No single item. I played around a little and found that there, too, was nothing in software settings. I noticed earlier that there were only few items in programs/accessories. When watching VIDEO on IE 7.x the Available memory gets down to 65000. If I buy more hardware, Video Card with 256MB and more RAM; 1024 that should help it. But my main question is by watching TaskMgr how do you know when the Memory is used up so much you need to buy more RAM? CDs are produced en masse so it would be impossible to make every one unique to match its product (CD) key. Would it, therefore, be possible to install, say, Windows XP Professional from any Windows XP Professional CD (of the same 'type') if you had a valid product (CD) key. I am thinking here of a (common) situation where a computer (which has a Windows XP Professional product key sticker) has been passed on without the Windows XP Professional CD.     - Underline turning bold I have a 3 line paragraph that needs to be underlined. The last line reads this "Agreement"). Agreement is bold italic. When I underline the entire paragraph the third line of the paragraph (this "Agreement").) turns the underline to bold, while in the rest of the paragraph the underline appears not bold or normal. The funny thing is if you add spaces to the third line of the paragraph the bold comes off the underline. Anybody have an answer to that one?     - One to sink your teeth into As far as I can reason out this problem, it is Windows related. I have a D-Link WBR-2310 router. Two desk-tops computers (both Windows XP SP2) are connected to the router using a cable and D-Link DFE-530 Ethernet cards. I also have a lap-top and a Palm TX PDA, which connect to the router wirelessly. The DSL modem and router are never switched off; the two desk-tops are switched off overnight. The desk-tops, as soon as they are switched on, and the various start-up programs are loaded, are on-line right away (or at least, they used to be). Both immediately load The Weather Network's "Weather Eye" and a mail-checking program (MailWasher Pro) - or, at least, both used to do this. PROBLEM: One of the desk-tops now takes several minutes to go "on-line" from start-up. There appears to be no problem with the modem-router combination, since the other units either are on-line, or immediately go on-line (in case of the PDA). There is no updated driver for the D-Link DFE-530 Ethernet card available - it is a Windows XP included driver. I have un-installed and re-installed the driver using the Device Manager. I have switched ports on the router. My machine is clean (I think). I update SpywareBlaster weekly, I update and run SpyBot S&D and Adaware weekly, I run AVG (free edition) daily. Could my Ethernet card have gone defective? It seems to work great once it kicks in (now, usually several minutes after start-up). My download speed is very good - no changes over the last few years. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated - I'm at the end of my (short) rope. If any details regarding my equipment are significant, and I haven't mentioned them, please ask. No, but they will slow down the performance of the user because you won't be
able to find anything. Consider removing the ones you really don't need or
put them in categorized folders.
