Windows Explorer freezes when copying/moving some files
I am running XP Professional SP2 with 1 GB RAM on a Dell Inspiron 9100
laptop. Most of my computer work is related to my photography profession.
Naming files & copying/moving them in Windows Explorer is a major, required
part of my work. However, recently when I try to copy/move a file from one
folder to another, the program freezes & an error message indicates that
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem & must shut down.
In addition, I frequently get a message that a filename is invalid or too
long, even though I have been using/copying filenames equal or longer (e.g.,
30+ characters) for the past two years. Reducing the filename to a small
number of characters (e.g., a dozen or less), & including a small number of
files at one time, does allow the above procedures to be completed without a
freeze.
With regard to possible malicious invasions, I regularly use programs for
detecting viruses, CAâ??s pest control, Microsoftâ??s â??Malicious Software Removal
Toolâ??, spam, ad-ware, etc.
Please advise!
Thanks you,

Sorry about posting here but can't find a IE7Group.
Went to see a friend tonight. I suggested he checked his cache size - we
tried to do it but the Tools would not open. It merely flashed for a split
second. In Control Panel the usual "Internet Options" had no title and
wouldn't open.
Any pointers for a simple fix. We did try to re-install but got a message

Aging XP
I have a 4 years old laptop with WinXP/2. Things have started to go wrong.
My Outlook Express often stalls out but this may be an interaction with my
MalWare suite (CA Security Center). I have tried to install the most recent
Google Earth but the install stalled out. Google Earth installed OK on my
tower (XP) and on my wife's Vista laptop. These are just 2 examples.
Question. Is it possible to reinstall XP from my distribution CDs which came
with the laptop without loosing my settings or installed programs? I could
export/import my Registry but this might just reintroduce the old problems
to the new installation.

not seems to help at all.
I'm running 2GB of RAM and I dpn't wish to keep taking my RAM in and out of

advise me on this. Maybe let me know what I've done wrong.

following to it :

MaxPhysPage=30000
It worked once but faled to succeeed after I reboot it. Help is very much

Backup Software rcommendation
For Windows XP Home
I'm looking for backup software that would do several things:
1. Create an "image" backup suitable for completely restoring to a new hard
disk in the event of the original's failure
2. Make quick backups of selected folders of data files, which can be
quickly referenced, opened and/or restored.
I have Norton Ghost 12.0, but find all the Norton products cause too many
other problems, and plan to remove it as soon as I find a substitute.

Winsock base providers
Just lost my ability to open pages on the internet with Explorer 7.
Diagnostic says "Error attempting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2."
Also says "Not all base service provider entries could be found in the
winsock catalog. A reset is needed."
I searched my computer for "Winsock base providers: 2 and don't find anything.
Google "Winsock" don't tell tell me anything about base providers: 2, but
tells me there should be at least 10 entrys in my Winsock file. (I only find
4) But since I don't know what the "base providers: 2" means, I wonder if
this is a different file, and if so, how can I find it on my computer?
Any assistance will be appreciated.

down range. I did not click on Dell quick fixes just read a message
not to let Dell set your start up etc... so if we cant use Dell icon
what is the best way to check msconfig without knowing what all the
lines on the screen do, if they are junk or not?
Also Dell did not send a packing list. No serial # nothing I was
thinking I would have to take this to FedEx Kindos and put the laptop
on the copier and take a picture of the bottom numbers etc. Is there a
better way?
One question about a monitor plug in I have a old Dell monitor I
bought for $10 and it works can anyone tell me the steps to connect

before I turn on the Vostro 1400? thanks

So e mail me any good xp pro links you have I'm not going to use Vista

My next Dell will be the m6300 $1,200 almost twice as much but could
plug this into a 32 inch LCD might be ably to plug the Vostro 1400

RAM Chips and Video Card
Hi ,
Re: RAM Chips and Video Card
How do you determine when to purchase more hardware in XP Home?
The Kernel Memory shows 54256 total. The Kernel Memory Pages shows 33460
while watching Foxnews Video: http://www.foxnews.com/video2/
The CPU 2.6 Ghz runs up to 75% - 100% most times while watching Video on IE
7.x.
How do you determine when you need to add more RAM chips or a Video card?
This PRESARIO S5100NX has 512RAM with onboard Video. The taskmgr shows
Physical Memory: 515608. When watching VIDEO on IE 7.x the Available memory
gets down to 65000.
If I buy more hardware, Video Card with 256MB and more RAM; 1024 that should
help it. But my main question is by watching TaskMgr how do you know when
the Memory is used up so much you need to buy more RAM?

XP Sp3 release (change in EULA?)
A BIG CONCERN of mine revolves around my current understanding of the
DIFFERENCE between Vista's EULA and XP's EULA.
VISTA EULA says the ("owner") of the s/w may reassign to another PC
only once.
XP SP2 EULA ...this does not seem to be stated limitation.
Do you all agree with the above?
and MORE IMPORTANTLY CAN THIS CHANGE WITH THE RELEASE OF XP SP3?
(so that is aligned with the less than friendly VISTA EULA) Tag: New Desktop Tag: 190013
Product (CD) keys
The purpose of a product (CD) key is to ensure a piece of software is legal.
CDs are produced en masse so it would be impossible to make every one unique
to match its product (CD) key.
Would it, therefore, be possible to install, say, Windows XP Professional
from any Windows XP Professional CD (of the same 'type') if you had a valid
product (CD) key. I am thinking here of a (common) situation where a
computer (which has a Windows XP Professional product key sticker) has been
passed on without the Windows XP Professional CD. I am asking in respect of
the capability of doing so NOT the legality of doing so which is another
(complex) area.

Underline turning bold
I have a 3 line paragraph that needs to be underlined. The last line reads
this "Agreement"). Agreement is bold italic.
When I underline the entire paragraph the third line of the paragraph (this
"Agreement").) turns the underline to bold, while in the rest of the
paragraph the underline appears not bold or normal. The funny thing is if
you add spaces to the third line of the paragraph the bold comes off the
underline. Anybody have an answer to that one? I can send an example if
need be.

One to sink your teeth into
As far as I can reason out this problem, it is Windows related.
I have a D-Link WBR-2310 router. Two desk-tops computers (both
Windows XP SP2) are connected to the router using a cable and D-Link
DFE-530 Ethernet cards. I also have a lap-top and a Palm TX PDA,
which connect to the router wirelessly.
The DSL modem and router are never switched off; the two desk-tops are
switched off overnight.
The desk-tops, as soon as they are switched on, and the various
start-up programs are loaded, are on-line right away (or at least,
they used to be).
Both immediately load The Weather Network's "Weather Eye" and a
mail-checking program (MailWasher Pro) - or, at least, both used to do
this.
PROBLEM: One of the desk-tops now takes several minutes to go
"on-line" from start-up.
There appears to be no problem with the modem-router combination,
since the other units either are on-line, or immediately go on-line
(in case of the PDA).
There is no updated driver for the D-Link DFE-530 Ethernet card
available - it is a Windows XP included driver.
I have un-installed and re-installed the driver using the Device
Manager.
I have switched ports on the router.
My machine is clean (I think). I update SpywareBlaster weekly, I
update and run SpyBot S&D and Adaware weekly, I run AVG (free edition)
daily.
Could my Ethernet card have gone defective? It seems to work great
once it kicks in (now, usually several minutes after start-up). My
download speed is very good - no changes over the last few years.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated - I'm at the end of my
(short) rope.
If any details regarding my equipment are significant, and I haven't
mentioned them, please ask.
Thanks again!

WinXP & SATA
Hi
I had installed WinXP into a new computer I built (2 G+) and a 250 gb SATA
drive. I was inthe process of installing drivers for various programs when
the optical drive ceased to function. As far as the computer was concerned,
it did not exist! Not in Explorer, not anywhere. I changed the drive - no
change. I rebooted the computer AGAIN and the monitor quit. I changed the
monitor board and no difference. I tried the monitor on a different computer
and it worked fine. Now I have a computer with no access for the monitor. I
even changed the Hard drive to a regular one but still noting.
Any ideas how to go from here!
Thanks.
