I have a problem with my SBS Service Pack 1. Quite often I get the CPU to
run at 100 % for a few minutes at a time. I have installed Process Explorer
and I see it comes from both svchost.exe and wmiprvse.exe. In reading around
here, it seems to be an issue of last year.

Looking into my UpdateServices, I see that my settings seems to be proper,
but when I click on Update Services in Standard Management I get the http 404
error, the ressource cannot be found. When I look at the expanded tree under
Update Services: Installation Error, Waiting for Review, Installation
Status, they all work but mostly empty, except Installation Status that only
has old stuff. So I guess my Update Service does not operate properly.

Also when I go in Internal Web Site, under Standard Management, the window
opens fine, but pretty much anything in it like Manage Your Comany's Internet
Web Site I also get http 404. If I type http://companyweb on the browser on
the server or client I get the Welcome Page of SBS. On that page if I click
My Company's Internet Web Site, I only get the Welcome Page of SBS again.

I am wondering if it is not all related. Any ideas what the problems are ?
Thanks.

If you try to access companyweb and you get the default web site, that
usually indicates a problem with the IP address in IIS.

Start by going to the Default Web Site and make sure that the IP address is
set to 'All Unassigned'. Then click on the 'Advanced' button and make sure
that under 'Multiple identities...' there are two entries: one with IP
address set to 'Default' at port 80 and host header the name of your server,
and one with IP address at 127.0.0.1 at port 80 with no host header.

Then go to companyweb, and make sure that the IP address is set to the IP
address of the server, click the 'Advanced' button and you should also see
two IP addresses listed: both with the IP address of the server, at port 80,
but different host headers. One with 'companyweb' as host header and the
other with 'companyweb.domain.local'

Start with this and see if you manage to make companyweb and the default web
sites operational. If that doesn't do it, check the ASP.net tab to see if
the .net version is set to 1.1.4322

Thanks for the answer.

In the Default Web Site in the advance tab under "Multiple identities" I
only had the first entry. I added the second.

For companyweb, the only companyweb I see is a folder under Default Web
Site. I do not see where I can see or change the IP address. Should there
be a site like Default Web Site but named Companyweb in the tree under Web
Sites ? The only things I have are: Default Web Site, Microsoft SharePoint
Administration and SharePoint Central Administration.

Now when I try to reach companyweb, I get http 400.

Thanks.

From your description it seems that companyweb has been removed or deleted.
Under 'Web Sites', you should see 'companyweb'. There shouldn't be any
folder with the name 'companyweb' under 'Default Web Site'.

First make sure that the 'Default Web Site' is operational and that the
functions of the virtual directories under that site work properly (Backup,
Monitoring, OWA, Remote).

After that take a look at the following document and follow the steps to
remove (if there is anything left) and reinstall companyweb

We have the following situation at one of our clients :

SBS 2003 SP2 + LOB applications and Exchange configured such that th
POP3 connector is getting the users mail at regular intervals.
What we see today is that every 15 minutes the CPU goes in the roof an
the system seems to go very slowly almost to a hang. When usin
performance monitor the system is so busy that it cannot print th
graphs continously, so there is a gap in the window. But after a whil
things comes back to normal and the CPU drops to normal levels.

This happened after we reconfigured the users POP3 accounts from ther
local workstations and let the exchange on the server take over tha
load (the reason for this was that internal mail should be delivere
with no delay and this could not be possible with the use of a
external hosted POP3 provider.) When analysing the situation wit
performance monitor further we saw that when the idle process droppe
from 98 to 0 % one of the processes started to get something to do
svchost#4. At the same time or after the situation came back to norma
we say that in the event log there were 20-30 entries where the sourc
was POP3 Connector, so we concluded that this was because every 1
minutes the exchange would connect to the POP3 provider an
check/download the users mail and deliver it to their mailboxes.

This interval can be changed to 30 minutes and if we do so , I suspec
that the interval where the CPU goes to 100% will follow this ne
interval.

So , check what service is going up in % Processor Time when Idle goe
down to 0%.
Check eventlogs for any entries at the same time as when the CPU goe
to 100%. They should give you a clue about what is going on.
