Our email is currently hosted by our ISP and we want to keep it that way for
now.
We have SBS 2003 but Exchange is not enabled.
A small app needs to send email alerts via SMTP. How can I enable sending
via SMTP without fully enabling Exchange?
No need to receive email via SMTP, just send.

Thanks

Artie

Did you try starting the SMTP service only? This is a Windows 2003
service, not just for Exchange.

Joe

PS. I am not sure of the value of SBS 2003 without Exchange...

Hello Artie,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Joe for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you want to send alert
email thru your Exchange. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, we have 2 methods to achieve this goal:

I. Run the SMTP service without Exchange 2003.

If you do not install Exchange 2003 on your SBS, you can just use the SMTP
service in IIS 6.0.

II. Run the SMTP service with exchange 2003.

If you install the Exchange 2003 on your SBS, the Exchange upgrade the SMTP
service on SBS. In this scenario, you need to start the normal Exchange
services to send this email. Please use the following steps:

1. Please run the CEICW to configure Exchange on SBS:

Go through the follow KB and Rerun CEICW again carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003

Detailed steps for your reference:

a. Open Server Management.
b. Click To Do List.
c. Click Connect to the Internet.
d. Proceed to the "Firewall" page and select "Enable Firewall".
e. On the "Services Configuration" page, make sure that "E-mail" service
has been checked.
f. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, check the web services that
you want to publish.
g. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose "Create a new Web server
certificate" and key in your public domain name in the box.
h. On the "Internet E-mail" page, choose "Enable Internet e-mail".
i. On the "E-mail Delivery Method" page, choose DNS (Use DNS to route
e-mail) or Smart Host (Forward all e-mail to e-mail server at your ISP) to
route your email, If you select smart host, you need to input the IP
address of your smart host.
j. Key in your e-mail domain name in "Email Domain Name" page.
k. Finish the wizard.

2. Create a User account in the ADUC and create mailbox for it. Then, input
the user account in your alert application.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
