Weird problem. We have a SBS R2 Dell PE1900 server with a Broadcom gig
NIC and it is not holding a static ip address

We can go into the network settings for the local area connection,
enter the static ip along with netmask and gateway . We put the server
ip address in as the DNS.

Press ok and ok, and expect it to be done and static. Go back in and
both round buttons are set for Automatically Obtain !!

At a cmd prompt the ipconfig info shows this :

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II
GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : (modified to protect) 00-1E-4F-
xx-xx-xx

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 192.168.1.5

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

So.... see the DHCP and autoconfiguration and the right
address......... but still not static.....

the guy who set this server up has never seen anything like this and I
have not either .

If we restart the server it stays on the .5 address. That at least is
good for now but I am afraid it might move someday . plus we just need
to know why this is happening.

If we try to run the EICW wizard it says we cannot because we have a
dynamic ip address. So we set it again, and the wizard will run. But
it still says dynamic.

Thanks for any suggestions. We do not want to install another network
card and I am afraid to uninstall the drivers to reinstall them since
it is the AD controller and I do not want to break anything AD .

server is plugged into a linksys rv 16 port vpn firewall with dhcp
turned on. like all the other pc's are.

i wondered if having dhcp someplace else could be a problem and
mentinoed it to the guy who installed but he said it is ok to have the
vpn router be the dhcp server. it has the dns of the sbs server setup
in it so the pc's get the proper dns info.

so the server does not have dhcp installed but he doen't think it
needs to.

this is the first time I have seen this probelm and the first time I
have seen sbs not be the dhcp server so maybe they are connected

thanks

SBS is happier if it is the DHCP server for the LAN. Turn off DHCP on the
router, change the server NIC to a static IP address and then re-run CEICW
to set up the SBS server as the DHCP server.

Not sure if "the guy" installed your SBS or just your firewall, but SBS
definitely likes to be DHCP. I'm betting that is your issue.

The previous tech installed both the sbs and the router and
everything. He has a full time job and did the sbs install as a favor
to the owners before giving me the network to debug and continue.

He thinks to make the vpn part of the router work for remote clients
that it has to be the dhcp server. I told him I did not believe that
to be true and so I will install dhcp on the sbs and do the zone etc
then temporarily turn off dhcp at the router and redo the wizard and
see if that helps.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSES
