I appreciate your time and comments. It meams a lot.
I admit, part of it is that I'll have a structured means, that is
demonstrable, to gain the knowledge I've felt for years I needed to do
the job of a sys admin. It's a bit like meteorology when I was in
the service. Back in the 70's it was still experience, inuition and
pattern-recognition that made a good forecaster stand out. Then, as
computers and their number-crunching became an increasingly larger
part, we found that the synpotic or 'big picture' pattern could be
handled/forecast by the computer models as well or better than a
human. Our focus shrank to the mesoscale, or smaller (county, city,
town-size, and smaller) -- but it now took a knowledge of not only
basic meteorology, but physics, calculus, optics and chemistry - not
to mention computer skills and ever-deepening knowledge of computer
model strengths and weaknesses. All of a sudden, a bunch of us
couldn't compete with the "college boys" who had the training and
education to do that. It was part of the reason I threw myself into
computers in the 90s - to "keep up".
Flash-forward to the last few years. What was a hellva skill level a
few short years ago (MCP in Win NT 4.0 Server) is barely above
average. As I' ve found (for me) it's not enough jump in the trenches
each day. I 'see' you guys & gals and realize what could be - if I
had the training base to build on. It's what works for me; I need a
structured knowledge base to build on. A lot of what I read in the
SBS world I struggle with - I don't have the knowledge base.
It's also a possible means to a better life. There's a MS Gold
Partner in my hometown that is well-thought of and growing, with solid
MCP's and MCSE's on staff. I'd kinda like to change jobs and do that
full-time. It'd also put me in a great place to learn from others in
a collaborative environment. (The pay is a heckuva lot better, too).
And my wife would be thrilled to have me home more, rather than an 80-
mile daily round-trip commute everyday.
Lastly, I hit the big 5-0 last year, and a goal as mentally
challenging as an MCSE and the constant learning this field demands is
good for the 'ole brain cells.
Sorry to get long-winded. Better get my feet on the ground and take
it one step at a time, one day at a time.
And I've got a server to get up by 0730 tomorrow morning.
Talk to you later,
Mike
