Hi All,

We are running SBS 2003 Standard SP2 with exchange.

One of my users keeps trying to send a calender meeting request to a certain
contact and gets a delayed notice some time later. My user is connected to
our exchange through Outlook 2003. Its only this particular recipient and my
user can send regular (non scheduling event) emails to this recipient
without error.

I know for a fact that the recipient is also using outlook. I don't know if
this recipient is connected to an exchange or just using POP. Can that be a
factor?

Thanks so much in advance for any help or suggestions.
-mike

A few questions to clarify: ...

Can others send meeting request to that same user ?and it works ?
( Quick way to determine which end to troublehshoot)
Who gets "delayed notice" ? What is the 'notice' ?
" Failure to reach user after X amount of time" ?

Hi Bobb,
Thanks for the response. Its only with this particular recipient. Nor does
it matter which user in our domain sends the schedule request. Here is the
message my user gets:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

The message never makes it to the intended recipient.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

OK, it's the END USER account.
What if he logs onto another PC - follow him ?
IS THIS USER LOCAL ? or fetching from webhost ? dialup? VPN ? etc
If he's remote, can he receive calendar appts from ANYONE ?
Have you done the same thing with other users - or he's the first ?

If he is the first, check server SMTP settings:
Read this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329636

If not the solution, then RE: your message:
" My user is connected to our exchange <server ?> through Outlook 2003."
More info/questions:
be specific as to how he connects.
Can he send YOU a calendar appt ?
Did you receive it ? Can you accept it/reply ?

Bobb,

I was able to send the same recipient a meeting request and the person
accepted it without delay or error. I am NOT connected to exchange via RPC
over HTTP. However, my user can still send calender requests to other
recipients without incident while still connected via RPC over HTTP.
Strange.

Also, I didn't see any Remote delivery Ques in retry mode under the exchange
system manager.
Let me know your thoughts.

then

I'm having a hard time getting the big picture here ?
Now YOU can send Ok. Did you try before ?
So it's intermittent ? Everyone in the domain ?
Or ONE user has an issue now ?
I'm confused !!!!!

Simple overview:
What is this config ?
Where are the users ?

> More info/questions:
> be specific as to how he connects.

Give em names
LOCAL and REMOTE
Local works for your company and is local to SBS server ?
REMOTE is a contractor that connects to your server over network ?
Examples: Bob and Steve
BOB ( local) logs onto server locally
Steve (REMOTEGUY) fetches email via Comcast
Bob can send...
Steve has account on my SBS server ...

Heading out for the day now...

Lets review the facts:
1) I have one notebook (joe) user who gets a delay issue when sending
calender requests to a certain recipient (john, outside contact, works for
another company)
2) My notebook user (joe) can send calender requests to other recipients
without a hitch
3) My notebook user (joe) connects to the exchange via RPC over HTTP (proxy)
using outlook
whether he is in the office or out in the field.
4) I (mike) can send calender requests to john just fine. No delay message.
5) I (mike) am connected to the exchange LOCALLY without using RPC over
HTTP.

Let me know what else you are interested in knowing Bobb. Thanks for your
patience and help.
Enjoy your evening,

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your post and thanks for Bobb's suggestions. My name is
Robbin Meng, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this issue!

Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

One of your users keeps trying to send a calendar meeting request to a
certain external contact and gets a delayed notice some time later. This
happened when it is sent via RPC over Http from outside of your domain.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

Before we go further, I would like to ask:

1. Does this issue occur to that notebook user (Joe) when using outlook
local inside of your domain?
2. Does this issue only occur when that notebook user (Joe) send meeting
request to certain particular user (John)?
3. Does the same issue occur to other people(mike) if connected to the
Exchange externally using RPC over HTTP?

If the issue only occurs when using RPC over HTTP and doesn't occur when
sending locally, it should be a network connections issue. You know the RPC
over HTTP depend on stable network connection strictly.

At the same time, please try to use OWA exteranlly to test if he gets the
same delay report.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Information Need
==============
On the SBS server, check event viewer for related information, if there are
anything related "mail delay" please help save it to *.evt and send to me
at v-robmen@microsoft.com <mailto:v-robmen@microsoft.com>.

Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Best regards,

Robbin Meng(MSFT)

Hi Robbin,
Questions answered below:

No, doesn't matter if user is connected to LAN or outside domain.

Either or. His Outlook settings remain the same for LAN or outside domain;
always setup for RPC or HTTP.

Yes.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your feedback and clarification.

From our tests, it seems the issue only occurs to the particualr user
account no matter locally or externally and other domain users are fine, am
I right?

Please go on to try OWA and confirm if this issue occur when he use OWA.

If so, it is very strange as there will be no delay when sending to other
users. I will perform further research on this.
