Okay children. Don't make me turn this newsgroup around and take you =
two back home. This vacation is supposed to be FUN.
But, to address both of your points (and to reiterate my own earlier):
R2? Who cares for XP SP3? WSUS v2 happens to be what R2 uses, WSUS3 is =
free, not sure how that makes the world more or less "perfect." =
There's no reason NOT to use it for mass deployments.
More importantly though, as I said, for new deployments I wouldn't rely =
on a package for clientapps anyways. I didn't for SP2 either. It is =
best to use an image with it pre-installed. If nlite works for you, =
that's great. I happen to prefer deploying via WDS and that made =
BDD2007 a great choice for me. "You say tomato, I say pimp" (credit to =
Burn Notice for a great quote)
And finally, Cris, in all politeness, there are plenty of reasons why XP =
images will be around for awhile. I have several clients that rotate =
out their old PC's based on a sliding scale, oldest out. Management =
team always gets the newest PC's purchased, and the older ones slide to =
the next group, and cascades down until the oldest get retired =
completely. The point being, boss gets a new PC, his old PC, still in =
commission, gets reimaged before being given to the guy in accounting. =
It isn't an uncommon practice. That means the older XP machines, until =
they are finally retired (the rotation schedule puts that at around =
2010) will get reimaged once a year as it falls to the next tier.
So really, is the squabbling or snide remarks necessary, on either side? =
In the IT world, there is always room for multiple solutions and =
opinions (otherwise there'd be no linux, no swath of firewall =
appliances, no IBM DB2 vs SQL Server vs Oracle.) It is always worth =
hearing another opinion...no reason to get nasty.

Rather hypocritical isn't it?
I never said there aren't circumstances that call for rebuilding a pc, =
but that ought to pretty much be the exception
But after Jun 30th, as it stands now, no new machines can be sold with =
XP Pro.
Don't want to wait for or don't have WSUS

Oh that's right...don't trust my link
Got to Microsoft's download site. Narrow your search to Windows XP, =
then order the list by release date and there it is
And I'm not threatening anyone. The deadline was set by the only =

Not everyone has R2 nor WSUS. Not everyone lives in a perfect world.
Nor do some people want to wait on WSUS. Here is some help for people
who live in a real world or who want more than cookie cutter ---- and
who will give the finger to the man every time they exercise their
right to reload XP onto replacement hard drives ...... after Cris's
threatening June 30th cutoff.
Ps -- it's "moot" point, not "mute" . Although I wish I could see how
well "mute" works for you.... <g>
Anyway....back to the good stuff: Learn how to make a slipstreamed XP
SP3 install CD. Check out N-Lite at the following link.
(regarding links: NEVER trust any links in the newsgroups. In fact,
never trust anyone who offers only a terse reply. Do your research
before clicking and find your own link. Or copy my following link....)
http://www.nliteos.com/
Note I have not yet used N-Lite nor have I yet made a slipstreamed XP
Pro SP3 CD, but you can believe I am going to as soon as I can find a
spare minute. I prefer to not wait for WSUS, I like to know that
laptops I will reload have the newest service pack even BEFORE they
make it to the office for a period of more than 24 hours, and I like
all the answers. Not just the rehearsed ones.
Screw June 30th.
Best to you all.
