Is there an easy way to move or copy the data information for WSUS from C: to
D: and then purge the old downloaded information from C:? I have a server
with a 25GB C: and nearly half of the space is being taken up by WSUS. There
is almost no space left on C:.

I have modified WSUS to tell the clients to download the approved patches
directly from the Microsoft Update site but none of the previously downloaded
patch information in WSUS has been purged from the C: drive.

Is there an easy way to get rid of this information or can I setup WSUS to
store this information on D: where there is plenty of room?

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary:

Assuming you are running WSUS 2. WSUS 3 comes with its own built in clean
up, but WSUS 2 requires a little effort.

WSUS 2:
http://www.wsuswiki.com/MowingTheGrass

1. Run Server Management - Updates frequently and decline unwanted updates.

2. Run c:\program files\update services\tools\WSUSUtil
deleteunneededrevisions

note that this will take some time

3. WSUSDebugTool (using the purgeunneededfiles tool)

WSUSUtil is installed on each WSUS server by default, and

WSUSDebugTool is available for download on the main WSUS site
(www.microsoft.com/wsus).

Note: Make sure to stop the WWW service on your WSUS box before running
WSUSUtil.

You can restart it again after the utility completes.

WSUSDebugTool requires no such preparation/follow-up.

4. Download the driver decline tool, copy to a folder, such as above, and
execute from a command line

http://www.codeplex.com/WSUS/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=164594.

Larry:

Thanks for the response. I will download the WSUSDebugTool and try that
clean up in the next day or so and let you all know what happens.

The server is running WSUS 2.0 not 3.0.

Thanks,

Gary

...and Gary do you have some reason not to upgrade to WSUS 3.0?

There is nothing stopping me from upgrading to WSUS 3 on this system other
than the time it would take to install it.

Thanks for the nudge though!
