I am installing WSUS 3.0 on our SBS 2003 SP1 and was following the
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=92399 document for installing on SBS,
but it seems incomplete. This is not an upgrade from any other version of
WSUS and I havn't used WSUS before, so I may be missing something. The
document says to cancel the wizard and skips to trouble shooting without any
setup/configuration instructions. I'm not sure what I need to do next, is
there more to this document somewhere?

Try this one instead. I didn't read it, so I apologize in advance if it's
not better than the one on technet, but I'm pretty sure this is what you
need:

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply, it's the same content but in a word doc.

Not sure speed is beneficial when the response is otherwise useless.

There are two parts to configuring WSUS - installing and configuring WSUS
itself, which is hopefully taken care of by the doc you've already seen, and
getting the clients to work with it, which is hopefully addressed here:

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started with Microsoft Windows Server Update
Services 2.0 on Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28c43d57-2e15-47b2-9a6f-1514aa3ed05f&displaylang=en

I think what you need to do at this point is to go to the 2.0 doc above, and
skip right to Step 5. This is where you configure the group policies for
the client PCs. If there is any additional configuration for WSUS 3 itself,
I'd get that from the first document, or just go to the WSUS Console to
configure everything. You need update source and proxy server (your SBS
name, port 8080).

FWIW, I have two GPOs for WSUS. The one for client PCs is set to auto
download and install, and the one for the SBS and member servers is set for
auto download and notify. I don't want the servers to reboot themselves
unattended. (I don't let it force a reboot of the client pc if a user is
logged in, either).

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, so please feel free to post back.

I'll set up the group policies per the ver. 2 document, I just wasn't sure
why the ver. 3 document says not to run through the wizard and not to
synchronize

It looked to me like that doc envisioned upgrading from WSUS2, in which case
you would not run the wizard (config copies over from old to new without
it), and would not sync as your downloads would already be current. It
seems like they're picturing that you either have SP1 or R2, with WSUS 2
already installed.

Hi dj,

You will possibly need three docs.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started with Microsoft Windows Server Update
Services 2.0 on Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28c43d57-2e15-47b2-9a6f-1514aa3ed05f&displaylang=en
