My WINS database became corrupted and I had to delete and restore it. It
started up fine but is sucking up disk space on my system drive and using a
lot of CPU cycles. I didn't do NBTSTAT -RR, do I need to? Any other ideas or
is this normal or ?

Thanks.

That shouldn't make any difference, really.

Event log errors?

In an SBS domain, which is by definition small, you should be able to blow
away the database and let it rebuild, without restoring it.

Nothing in the event log. So does usually take a few days to rebuild? I think
I deleted all the files in the WINS database which would enable the restore
function in WINS (?).

Does that rebuild the DB or try to restore the DB (from where?) ?

I may have selected restore without a DB to restore from?

Thanks

My heavens, no.

What exactly were you having problems with, and what exactly did you do to
try & resolve them? This isn't sounding kosher so far....

I think you can delete the Jet database, but there's no restoration unless
you were to have done a restore from a backup.

What's in your coffee cup, dude? ;-)

So here is the original error message received in the event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Wins
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4224
Date: 8/11/2008
Time: 9:28:12 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
WINS encountered a database error. This may or may not be a serious error.
WINS will try to recover from it. You can check the database error events
under 'Application Log' category of the Event Viewer for the Exchange
Component, ESENT, source to find out more details about database errors. If
you continue to see a large number of these errors consistently over time (a
span of few hours), you may want to restore the WINS database from a backup.
The error number is in the second DWORD of the data section.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 25 0c 00 00 f9 fd ff ff %...ùýÿÿ

This happened over then weekend and was continuing every second. I stopped
WINS and that presented the "Restore database" function in WINS admin. I then
moved all files from the %%systemroot%%\system32\wins directory, leaving the
directory empty.

I must have been still groggy from the weekend because I am not sure if I
did a restore db or a restart? I'm assuming that a restore would ask what to
restore from? So I probably did a restart and rebuilt the db.

Okay so I was distracted... It seems to be running okay but I just want
verify the operabilty of.

Anyway it seems to be running but it is taking up 10-25% of CPU. Is that
normal?

Oh, and I have the usual hooch in my cup........

I don't think so, but I suggest you post in a general Windows networking
group to get more expert eyes on the problem.

You can always uninstall & reinstall WINS, if you need to. It's easy.
