Greetings,

I have a domain setup with SBS 2003 Premium SP1 as the Primary Domain
Controller. The version of SBS that we have is an OEM that came with the
computer from Dell and we do not have software assurance. We do have the
maximum number (75) user CALs for SBS. I would like to upgrade to Windows
Server 2003 Standard to remove the user limit (and other) restrictions. I
would also like to purchase additional CALs to have a total of about 150.
After completing the upgrade, I would like to split Exchange off of the SBS
machine onto a new computer. A separate SQL Workstation server operating
under a processor license is already available on the network so we do not
really need a separate SQL Workstation license.

The best route appears to be purchasing the SBS 2003 Premium Transition
Pack, 75 Transition Pack CALs, 75 Windows Server 2008 CALs, and 75 Exchange
2007 Standard CALs.

However, I have a few questions about this process:

* Can the Windows Server 2003 Premium Transition pack be applied to the OEM
version of SBS?

* If yes, would the stand alone licenses provided by the transition pack be
retail or OEM? Mainly I am interested in whether we would have transfer
rights for the stand alone licenses Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server
2003, etc. or if they must all still be installed on that same Dell computer.

*Is there a transition pack still available for SBS 2003 SP1, or would we
have to upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium R2 before using the transition pack? If
I must upgrade, would there be any licensing problems with applying the
upgrade to the OEM SBS version?

*If yes to the first two questions, would it be possible to add Software
Assurance to the retail licenses I receive once we purchase the transition
pack and if so would this allow me to upgrade to Exchange 2007 and Windows
Server 2008?

*Could I also add SA to the transition pack CALs and if so would this allow
me to upgrade them to Exchange 2007 and Windows 2008 CALs?

Thanks for your help,

James

Also, here are the answers based on my personal search for your questions:

Note: I am not guarantee the answers are exactly right. Please double
confirm with Licensing specialist.

Q: Can the Windows Server 2003 Premium Transition pack be applied to the
OEM version of SBS?

A: Yes, you can use SBS 2003 transition pack for SBS OEM as well.

Q: If yes, would the stand alone licenses provided by the transition pack
be retail or OEM? Mainly I am interested in whether we would have transfer
rights for the stand alone licenses Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server
2003, etc. or if they must all still be installed on that same Dell
computer.

A: There is no separate Transition pack for OEM licenses, you have to
purchase the Transition Pack retail license for the respective edition. you
have to purchase SBS Premium Transition pack license software. With retail
license, the component like Exchange Server 2003 can be installed on other
server.

Q: Is there a transition pack still available for SBS 2003 SP1, or would we
have to upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium R2 before using the transition pack?
If I must upgrade, would there be any licensing problems with applying the
upgrade to the OEM SBS version?

A: TP for SBS 2003 SP1 is no long available. You need to get the OEM R2
disc for upgrade.

2003 R2

Q: If yes to the first two questions, would it be possible to add Software
Assurance to the retail licenses I receive once we purchase the transition
pack and if so would this allow me to upgrade to Exchange 2007 and Windows
Server 2008?

A: Yes, you can.

Q: Could I also add SA to the transition pack CALs and if so would this
allow me to upgrade them to Exchange 2007 and Windows 2008 CALs?

A: Yes.

hi James,

If you need to upgrade now, then the transition pack will help you save your
investment in licenses.

The SBS Premium Transition pack would provide SQL Workgroup edition
and ISA2004 Std edition over the SBS Standard Transition pack. It appears
you don't need a 2nd SQL so you need to evaluate whether ISA is worth the
higher cost; there is a IMO hefty difference in price between Std and Prem,
esp. between the sp1 versions.

The sp1 transition pack still appears in my Apr08 price list but check
whether
if it's available in your area. There may be a lead time after you order.

Besides the transition pack for SBS, you would also need 70 TP CALs;
5 CALs are already included in the SBS TP according to the doc at
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/techinfo/planning/transition.mspx

The TP is only available via the retail channel. It can be applied to an
OEM
SBS license. After you apply and exercise it, the resulting licenses are
FPP
(retail type) and are separate server products not components of a suite.
As such, you have 90 days to apply SA to each, and it starts from the day
you apply or activate the Transition pack.

You don't/can't really add SA to the TP, but you may add SA to the resulting
products - server or CAL licenses.

Being FPP, you may install on another computer. I'm not really sure what
happens to the OEM SBS license but I think you can't use it (or sell it).
