We have an SBS 2000 Server with a Raid 5 array with 3 drives and 1 hot
spare drive.

The old server is an IBM x235. New server is x236.

Can we simply pull the SCSI Controller and 4 drives out of the old
server and place them in the new server and expect to be good or is the
OS tied to a chipset on the old motherboard or BIOS somehow?

Hi,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, I understand that you want to know whether can move a RAID
5 array to another server. If I am off base, please feel free to let me
know.

Actually, if you use a software RAID5 set provide by Windows SBS 2003, then
you can move the RAID5 set to another computer. It should be recognized as
foreign disk. You can import it in Disk Management MMC. For more
information, please refer to the following technology article:

Manage Dynamic Volumes
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/354e5163-f388-4354-98

Please note:

1. Please do backup all the important data to a network share or tape
device first to ensure everything is transferred safely.

2. We can move dynamic disk to another computer. However, based on my
experience, it is recommended that we move the dynamic disk only once.

But if you use the hardware RAID 5 array, then I suggest you contact the
third-party Hardware vendor.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope the above information
helps.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for taking time to respond.

From your reply, I understand that you want to know whether you can simply
pull the SCSI Controller and 4 drives out of the old server and place them
in the new server.

Based on my knowledge, if you don't change the hard-disk or drives
sequence, I believe the OS may work fine after you pull the SCSI Controller
and 4 drives to new server, but I cannot sure the mainboard on new server
can support all of SCSI Controller or hardware. So please contact the
third-party Hardware vendor.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope the above information
helps.
