Greetings,

The "Media care" portion of the manual on this USB tape drive says that
verify can be turned off because DDS verification takes place during the
backup.

But the SBS backup Wizard does not allow verify to be turned off. I know I
can exclude the v switch by just scheduling a NTBackup, but then I loose out
on the e-mail notification of successful backup withour adding some other
monitoring software.

I wouldn;t do this lightly. The more verification the better. But I have
one client who's servers are busy doing something all night long, and if I
can cut the time down in half, plus save on tape wear, I might consider it.

Any way to disable verify??

Thanks

Hi Gary,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, I understand that you want to know how to disable the
verify function in NTBackup.exe program. If I am off base, please feel free
to let me know.

Actually, when you run Backup Wizard in Windows SBS 2003, its launches the
Backup Small Business task from the Task Scheduler. The task in turn
executes the Backup Runner from %sbsprogramdir%\Backup\bkprunner.exe to
begin the backup process. Backup Runner automatically passes the backup
script, generated on the fly depending on the registry and file location,
to NTBackup to start the backup job.

Based on my knowledge, you can uncheck verify option during configure
backup wizard on Windows SBS 2003. To do so, please refer to the following
steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System
Tools, and then click Backup.

2. Click Next -> Back up files and settings -> Next -> Let me choose what
to back up -> Next -> <select backup data you want> -> <choose a place to
save your backup> -> Next -> Advanced -> choose Type of backup -> Next.
Then you can uncheck verify option on <How to Backup> pane.

I hope the above information helps.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu

Steve,

Thanks for your response. But. like I said, the SBS 2003 Backup wizard does
not allow me to turn off verify. And wen it passes it to scheduler, it does
it as bkrunner, without any available options.

NTBackup DOES allow me to turn off backup when I use it instead of the SBS
Backup wizard. But then it is not part of the notification process that comes
with SBS to e-mail activity.

I don"t mean to be rude, but did you even read my origional post? I am
referring to the SBS 2003 Backup wizard, not NTBackup

Steve,

In my reply, I said "Not to be rude" but maybe I was just that. I apologize.
But yo will see that everything you were telling me in your original reply
is what I already said I knew in my original post.

Thanks for trying

Hi Gary,

Thanks for taking time to respond.

Unfortunately, based on my knowledge, I am afraid it is not possible to
implement your request. Please have a deep thinking; the Backup
Configuration Wizard will enable a customer to choose a pre-set schedule
and pre-set backup options to backup the entire server including the System
State and Exchange database.

The actual backup is done by NTBackup, which is native in the operating
system. Backup Runner automatically passes the backup script, generated on
the fly depending on the registry and file location, to NTBackup to start
the backup job.

The backup script when backing up to tape:
===============================
%windir%\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@%sbsprogramdir%\Backup\Small
Business Backup Script.bks" /d "Small Business Server Backup created on
%date% at %time%" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "Small Business
Server Backup Job" /l:s /p "%Tape library pool%" /UM

The backup script when backing up to hard disk:
===============================
%windir%\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@%sbsprogramdir%\Backup\Small
Business Backup Script.bks" /d "Small Business Server Backup created on
%date% at %time%" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:off /m normal /j "Small Business
Server Backup Job" /l:s /f "%Hard drive location%" /UM

However, you cannot modify this backup script in Windows SBS 2003.

I truly understand your concern. I will do my very best to see that your
feedback is routed to the appropriate channel. Thanks for your
understanding and cooperating regarding this. If there is anything unclear,
please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day.
