SBS 2000 Life Cycle
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&p1=2807&x=10&y=9

Main stream support ended in 2005 for Windows 2000 server
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=7274

The last Service Pack was SBS 2000 SP1a.

There is still an SBS 2000 newsgroup and we can also take a shot here.

OHHH, so THAT's WHY they called that thing 'the Windows 2000 post-SP4
update' not SP5, in order not to extend the product lifecycle. (they knew
they had a new, shiny, toy)

Now, did SBS 2000 SP1a include Windows SP4 or not? (stuffed if I can
remember)

Jan 2001 + 5yrs Mainstream + 5yrs Extended = Jan 2011, regardless of SP's.

From personal experience though I can tell you: MS give a rat's heiney about
SBS 2000. Upgrade or die, nobody at MS remembers the product, nor do they
care about it.

Thanks Merv,

I have an client running SBS 2003 on an old server that is becoming more and
more un reliable and he wants to replace the server.
If I install a new server with SBS 2003 we will be in a situation of having
brand new hardware (32bit) running SBS 2003 with SBS 2008 coming out over
here (Ireland) shortly yet he wont be able to upgrade to it as SBS 2008 is
64bit.

So once 2003 becomes end of life his server will be no good to him.

I'm trying to work out the best strategy for him at this point.

Any thoughts?

You can buy new Hardware that is 64bit capable and then install SBS 2003 =
on it. do not get it "factory installed" but rather through Volume =
Licensing and purchase Software Assurance. Then when SBS 08 is =
available you can upgrade. (NOTE: it will not be an inplace upgrade =
though)

I have a customer that is running an SBS 03 server on it's last =
legs...When SBS 08 is launched on Nov 12, that customer will be getting =
a new server and migrate to 08 then. I think we can limp along for 4 =
months.

Microsoft opts against SP5 for Windows 2000
http://news.cnet.com/Microsoft-opts-against-SP5-for-Windows-2000/2100-1016_3-5469948.html?hhTest=1

"Because Microsoft believes the Update Rollup will meet the needs of
customers better than a new service pack, there will be no Service Pack 5
(SP5) for Windows 2000," the software maker said. "Therefore, SP4 becomes
the final service pack for Windows 2000."

I actually found Windows 2000 SP5 listed in Add/Remove Programs on a Win2K
machine of a client I took over recently. After a little puzzling, I found
out this was an "Unofficial SP5" from some 3rd party on the web (not sure
who installed it). The client won't let me remove it yet because the
machine was purchased as part of an instrument package from a vendor and
they just now "finally got the vendor's software working properly" after a
major software upgrade. They claim the vendor's app won't run under WinXP.

AARGH!!! :-(
