I have an SBS 2003 R2 Prem server with 10 XP clients. On each of these
clients when they try and open any type of .jpg file (either through Outlook
attachment or save to local disk then open) they get an error message
indicating a corrupted file. I have tried this with Paintbrush, Picture and
Fax Viewer and Office's viewer.

Now normally I would say it's just a corrupted .jpg file BUT when I try and
open this file on any computer that is not part of THAT SBS setup it opens
fine. In addition it's not just 1 .jpg file but any .jpg file.

I would say this is not an SBS issue but this happens with every computer
just on that SBS network. This is strange. Any ideas?

Hello Richard,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this issue!

Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

You cannot open any type of .jpg files on the XP clients of SBS domain.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

Suggestion :
==============
I would like to suggest that you try the following steps:

1. Let's perform a Clean Boot. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any
programs that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with
other device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.

a. Run MSCONFIG.EXE. (MSCONFIG is a built-in tool for Windows XP\2003
systems.)
b. In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All". Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.
c. In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
d. Restart the computer. Does the problem still persist?

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

2. Based on my search, the update KB945432 of Outlook may caused this
issue, especially when the JPG files were send or created on a MAC
computer. So please delete the update KB945432 on the problematic clients
as a test. Also you may like to apply the hotfix 951678 as a test:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;951678

This should allow some of the jpg pictures to be open but if there is
additional metadata in the header of the file, it may not be recognized by
windows picture and fax viewer for example GDIplus doesn't recognize it.

3. Some antivirus software real-time scan may corrupt the jpg opening.
Please uninstall or disable them(if any) on problematic clients as a test.

Note: Before disable the antivirus software, please disconnect it from
network and perform a full scan to make sure the system is clean.

4. Move the JPG files to another path on the problematic computer and check
whether it can be opened.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Information Need
==============
1. Capture screenshots of the exact symptom and send to me at
v-gzwang@microsoft.com
2. Check event viewer for related error message, save them to *.evt file
and send them to me.
3. Logon client with local user account and try to open the jpg files.
What the result?

I look forward to your reply. Also, if you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know. I am happy to help. :-)

Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Best regards,

Gary Wang(MSFT)
