Hello,

Shut down server for some electrical work. When starting back up
server winds up in a loop, with a error 51/Registry_Error. Last changes
that were done were FTP Service install, and allowance of new IP address's
for external access' about 2 weeks ago. I can boot the machine in safe mode,
so I removed the FTP Service (add/remove programs). Still having the problem.
Noticed this error in event log right before machine reboots.

Event ID: 4275
Error parsing XML file. Reason: XML document must have a top level element.
Incorrect XML
ErrorCode : 0xC00CE558
Interceptor : 14
OperationType : Populate
Table : MBProperty
ConfigurationSource : file:///C:/WINDOWS/system32/inetsrv/MetaBase.xml
Row : 0
Column : 0

File was empty, so I just renamed it. Error does not show up anymore, but
machine still reboots.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Steve

I can boot to safe mode, safe mode command prompt, and safe mode
with networking.

Last known config did not work, still goes into loop.

If your metabase.xml was empty, you have a big problem. Can you restore from
backup?

No backup, as far as I can tell. Would that be causing the reboots ?
Would there be any 'automatic' backups being stored ?

No backups?? Ouch. If it is booting in safe mode, but not normally..that
narrows things to a misbehaving service (would usually log though) or
misbehaving system dll (such as driver) that obviously isn't getting logged.
Normally I'd recommend just restoring the latest system-state...but now?
Try booting with debug logging enabled from the boot menu and see which file
is last loaded before reboot. Maybe start disabling devices from
there...but yeah, if the IIS metabase file was empty, I suspect you have
much bigger problems. Might end up having to rebuild. :(

Thanks...

The machine will boot up to the point of 'applying computer settings'. I'm
just
theorizing that it in an IIS problem. Is there anyway to boot without IIS
Starting, to verify.

Also, there are 4 files in the Metaback directory, can I use any of these..

Initial Backup - created automatically by IIS setup.MD1
Initial Backup - created automatically by IIS setup.SC1
SUS20MetabaseBackup.MD0
SUS20MetabaseBackup.SC0

If not, is the metafile extremely machine specific. If I build another
machine on
an isolated network, and name it the same, configure it the same, can I just
take
the files and copy them over ?

Thats of course, assuming this is actually what is causing the problem....

Can you...

Boot into the Windows Menu (F8), select the menu item: "Disable automatic
Restart on System Failure". Then reboot and see if you get a blue screen
with an error code indicating the problem.

Hi,
In Windows Server 2003 (and SBS 2003) the metabase is saved in an XML
file and it is automatically backed up when you change it. You have
metabase corruption and you are right, you can use those files. The
easiest approach is to open IIS manager and restore the metabase to
the last backup.

You can disable the IIS service =96 setting its start value to =930=94 in
the registry (it was something like
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE..system..current..services =96 you can google it).

Disabling IIS service will trigger a whole lot of other errors on a SBS
server though. That is something you don't want to do normally unless for
troubleshooting this and trying to restore the metabase from a non-backup.

You can disable the IIS service ? setting its start value to ?0? in

Thanks... the only thing is that I believe
that I can not start IIS Manager in Safemode, can I ?
Will give it a shot. If not, do you know what the manual procedure is ?

As far as the Stop code goes, its 51 (Registry_Error).

I have a stupid question, Sraines:
Are you using RAID, if yes what type and what=92s the status of the
RAID?

I=92ve had a similar case before =96 the server was giving me some errors
and after a reboot I was exactly where you are. The server had RAID5
and after a drive failure the controller corrupted some of the system
files. I was able to boot in safe mode like you BTW.

Tomorrow I will reproduce your metabase corruption (an emty
metabase.xml file), to see how this would affect an SBS2003 server.
I will post also a video about recovering Metabase from corruption.

Thanks...

There is a raid controller in the unit. I believe its SI based, but will
check.
It is not active at this time though, as we were waiting for some extra drives
to come in.

You might find helpful the following screencast- =93How to restore
Metabase in IIS6=94:
http://www.netometer.com/video/tutorials/sbs-metabase-restore/

In your case you will have to use manual restore with history files,
which is outlined in step2 of the video.

I was able to reproduce your error and this is not the problem for the
51 error. Did you try to run Scandisk in Safe mode?

Thanks for the video...
I replaced the files, but your right, that is not the problem. I was able
to find
a registry tool to scan the registry in Safe Mode. Of course, during the
scan I
received the same blue screen and error as when trying to boot. If I go
into recovery console, and try and copy the backup registry, is that the same
as booting
with 'Last known Good config' option ?

Yes, it is. You *really* need to track down a system-state backup. Or
rebuild the server.

If you can image the server then you can safely reinstall it. This is
an old video about W2k DC reinstall but the idea is the same =96 choose
first new installation and when the installer finds the existing one
choose repair:
http://www.netometer.com/samples/reinstalldc/step1/step1.html

Most probably Exchange won=92t be working too and you will have to
reinstall it. That=92s another oldie for Exchange2k but it works the
same way for Exchange 2003 (from Add/Remove programs):
http://www.netometer.com/samples/reinstalle2k/step1/step1.html

I did not understand whether you ran Scandisk in safe mode.

Sorry... have been out of town for a bit...

Yes the scan was done in safe mode... didnt find anything.

I will try the recovery. The concern now would be whether the
exhange data will be unavailable. I can Copy (backup wont work in safe
mode) the complete exchange folder to somewhere safe. If I repair, will
it destroy the existing mailbox's, or will I be able to export them out ? If
the data is kept intact then maybe I can import back in once exchange is
fixed...

Thanks again.
