I have SBS2003 R2 Standard installed on a dual NIC Dell Poweredge server.
We are hosting EXCHANGE and have Symantec Endpoint v 11.0 installed.

Each mailbox is receiving a tremendous amount of SPAM and I'd like some
guidance as follows:

1. How do I verify and setup if absent reverse DNS
2. are there any other configuratiopn settings that would help reduce
UNWANTED and UNSOLICITED emails?
3. Is there a SBS2K3 add-in that will help
4. Is there a Symantec Endpoint 11.o add-in(sorry for OT)
5. Is there a relatively inexpensive, Third party solution
6. Is there an appliances that would do the job?

at one client I have ~ 5 users
at another I have ~ 25

Thanks In Advance

The biggest step you can take here is make sure that Exchange SP2 is =
installed and the IMF (Intelligent Message Filtering) is properly =
configured.
You can find a guide on the MS Website

There are hardware devices, such as Barracuda networks, that claim to =
reduce spam

Don't know/don't use symantec

The only inexpensive solution is the using the IMF.

My two cents, hosted filtering solutions such as Spam Soap or Message =
Labs are my recommendation. When you do the cost per mailbox, ease of =
administration, great accuracy, and the fact that the spam never hits =
your WAN connection are some big reasons why this has become my only =
solution for most of my customers whether enterprise or SBS.

Just install ORF on my sbs2003r2 and went from hundreds of spam on =
blackberries to none. Outlook on the desktop had always handled spam =
well but why have it delivered in the first place.

I am not a strong Exchange tech but ORF went on and was finetuned in one =
day.

administration, great accuracy, and the fact that the spam never hits =
your WAN connection are some big reasons why this has become my only =

The biggest step you can take here is make sure that Exchange SP2 =
is installed and the IMF (Intelligent Message Filtering) is properly =
configured.
You can find a guide on the MS Website

There are hardware devices, such as Barracuda networks, that claim =
to reduce spam

Don't know/don't use symantec

The only inexpensive solution is the using the IMF.

Rick,

For clients that size you have two or three choices as best I can tell. You
can not really go wrong with any of the choices so I will simply outline
them....

I would look at something like Postini or AppRiver (have personal experience
with both) or any of the other "services" (spamstopshere.com, MXLogic,
MailFoundry, et al). These are really quite effective and will reduce your
spam to pretty much nothing.

If you do not want to do this, then look at the IMF v2 and make sure that
you look at everything (Connection Filtering being a potential big
help...just use the 'right' ones).

If you choose to use the free IMF v2 then take a look at a couple of the
'add on' (as I call them) for exposing the SCL (Spam Confidence Level) and
for looking at the content of the UCEArchive folder (first has to be
'enabled') by something called the IMF Archive Manager.

We have one SBS2003 SP2 client who receives some 12,000 - 15,000 spam
messages a month (only 25 employees). Now, at first I was setting the
Gateway Action to 'Archive'. That became an administrative nightmare.
After three/four months of actively looking inside theUCEArchive folder and
determining that essentially all of those messages maked with an SCL of 8 or
9 are spam and - more importantly - that there were no legitimate messages
in there then I changed the action from 'Archive' to 'Reject'.

Since the day that I initially configured IMF v2 the amount of spam that
the users received dwindled down to pretty much nothing. Just make sure
that you update Windows Updates to Microsoft Updates so that the IMF updates
will be available to you. This is really important.

Another thing that you could do would be to install some software on the
SBS2003 box itself. Something like ORF or IMF Companion. There are the
others as well...such as TrendMicro or Symantec, et al.

IMF v2 would be the way that I would go if you really do not want to spend
any money. If the clients do not object and do not mind spending a very
little bit or money then I would absolutely suggest one of the services.
The company for which I work has standardized on Postini, but before that
happened I used AppRiver. Make sure to consider using a 'closed domain' and
to configure the Firewall to accept SMTP Traffic only from the "Service" IP
Addresses (better, use the range...Postini has a huge range).

HTH,

Cary

PS...if you want send me an e-mail (look at the properties and remove the
obvious). I will gladly help.... I do not normally do this but you have
already received some really good advice so if you need specific help....

I would go with Russ suggestion.
There Is no need to buy an external solution for SMBs If not VERY heavy
email users.
IMF 2 that comes with Exchange 2003 SP2 and an RBL like Russ one gives a
VERY good combination and fights spam well.

When set, administration costs Is low and runs without interference.

My two cents, hosted filtering solutions such as Spam Soap or Message Labs
are my recommendation. When you do the cost per mailbox, ease of
administration, great accuracy, and the fact that the spam never hits your
WAN connection are some big reasons why this has become my only solution for
most of my customers whether enterprise or SBS.

Don't forget to use zen.spamhaus.org as a RBL
The Barracuda hardware DOES work however it is NOT cheap.

The biggest step you can take here is make sure that Exchange SP2 is
installed and the IMF (Intelligent Message Filtering) is properly
configured.
You can find a guide on the MS Website

There are hardware devices, such as Barracuda networks, that claim to
reduce spam

Don't know/don't use symantec

The only inexpensive solution is the using the IMF.

I have SBS2003 R2 Standard installed on a dual NIC Dell Poweredge
server.
We are hosting EXCHANGE and have Symantec Endpoint v 11.0 installed.

Each mailbox is receiving a tremendous amount of SPAM and I'd like
some
guidance as follows:
