SBS2003 PDC and about 25 W2k workstations. Some machines experience
very slow (4-20 seconds) each time the navigate thru a folder tree on
the file server. Interestingly if one uses a drive mapping or directly
access the UNC path the responsiveness is less than a second for each
mouse click. IOW the latency only occurs when accessed via My Network
Places.

I have checked many posts and have not found a solution even though
many have had exactly this same symptom. Saw a post the eliminated
some registry key about looking for scheduled tasks but that had no
noticeable effect. Any ideas?

Wow...win2k. Take this with a grain of salt, as this information is a
little dated, but Windows 2000 defaults to having the "computer browser"
service enabled. This is great for workgroup setups, but in a domain
environment, that is a lot of broadcasts going round the network. XP has it
too, but it is a bit more efficient so you don't notice the lag.

The easiest way to fix this is to disable the service on client machines.
If you disable it on one machine and retest, you'll still see the lag. The
effect is cumulative...for every browser on the network, the performance on
browsing is degraded. You'll have to disable it on multiple clients to see
a difference.

One last note, leave it running on the server if you aren't publishing
resources via AD.

At least that was my experience with slow performance on win2k back in the
day. Again, it has been years since I've had to deal with it. So I hope
that helps.

Thank you both, I'll try both of those suggesting next time I'm on
site but it doesn't sound like a likely solution. I mean if there were
computer browser problems I would think it would affect browsing the
network for computers and not browsing an established connections
folder structure. Also I would think it would apply whether I accessed
via Run or from My Network Places. And other machines are fast. I mean
it's just so weird. I can have two explorer windows open side by side
to the same UNC path and the one got to via MNP goes DMV-speed while
the other is instantaneous.

I know it doesn't make sense, but MNP in win2k was closely tied to the
information gleamed from the computer-browser service. When accessing by
UNC, it didn't happen. This was specifically retooled in XP and so you
don't see much chatter about it these days, but your description of two
machines, side-by-side, showing very different behavior just because of
network places sounds exactly like what I remembered...

That would make some sense then but please understand I'm not talking
about two machines running side by side in my last description but two
explorer windows on one machine side by side with the same UNC path. I
wish I understood a little better how this service works. Some
descriptions make it sound like a name server and others make it sound
like a client. Is it a server, client, or both? If you know of any
resources that would help me bone up I would greatly appreciate it.
Oh, and are you suggesting I should disable it on all W2k workstations
if this is the problem? I got a couple of hot tickets here I need to
knock out then I can bang my head against this wall again.

It is both a server and client. And yes, I'm recommending disabling it on
all win2k clients.
