I am running SBS 2003 SP2 and needed to replace my C disk drive due to drive
errors. According to Acronis, I could use their product, Migrate Easy, to
clone the drive. The clone worked; however, now my shadow copy is broken. I
get the following error message when I click on the drive's Shadow Copies
tab: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on the Shadow
Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details
IVssSnapshotProvider::QueryVolumesSupportedForSnapshots. I have done
everything possible from uninstalling to reinstalling the COM+ components,
reregistering the VSS dlls. Vssadmin list writers does not show any errors;
all writers are stable.

BTW - I uninstalled Migrate Easy and Acronis has been unable to solve the
problem Any one have a suggestion?

I even tried reverting to my old disk drive and got domain issues and the
Exchange store wouldn't mount. I'm pretty much stuck now.

Have you tried turning off Shadow copy and re enabling it on the affected
drives?

Russ - Thanks for your quick response. I have turned off the VSS service and
restarted it. the problem is affecting all my drives and not just the cloned
one. When I bring up the properties for the drive and click on the Shadow
Copies tab, there is an error "Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible
for shadow copies: error 0x8004230f: The show copy provider had an unexpected
error while trying to process the specified operation."

Thanks

Thanks for the link. However, I have done everything suggestion and the
problem still exists. Acronis has suggested the following:

This solution has been originally suggested by Microsoft:
-Start->Run->regedit
-Clean registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Storage\Volume\
-Clean registry key HKLM\System\MountedDevices

I'm concerned that the fix might break my system altogether. Any thoughts?

That sounds to me like something I'd do if MS support suggested it. I'm not
so sure how I feel about Acronis support as they don't seem too familiar
with what's going on here. The problem is that without knowing specifically
what those keys do, you could be setting yourself up for a worse situation
than you're already in. At the least, I'd have a full, verified backup and
be prepared to do a full restore in the worst case scenario.

Did you see this
http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/926997.htm? In this
thread, a MS support engineer suggests a possible issue with the first key
you list, and the steps to fix it. If your situation matches what he's
describing, I'd edit the key as he suggests. (I looked at my production SBS
and I do have the Service value set to "volsnap" as he describes).

I don't think I'd just go ahead and delete those keys without calling MS
support and getting their take on it first.

Dave - thanks for the feedback. I am also reluctant to do this suggested
fix. Regarding your thread link - my registry keys are fine, my VSS writers
are fine. Everything looks fine - VSS will even start. However, it fails as
soon as I try a b/u or click on the Shadow Copies tab for my disk drives.
I'm currently stuck w/o any other ideas. I don't want to have to pay
Microsoft $259 but I may not have a choice at this time. Thanks again.

Unfortunately, VSS is one of those things where sometimes an MS support call
is your only option. If you've done the usual - installed any hotfixes and
update rollups you find, disable/re-enabled it, etc. I don't really know of
any good alternative.

One thing you could consider is purchasing a TechNet Plus subscription. I
haven't checked personally, but someone just commented to me that TechNet
Plus is about the cost of two support calls, and it includes two calls. If
this is correct, assuming you used both calls, you'd get the rest of the
stuff at no additional cost. You do have to register the subscription the
first time you go to use the calls, so it might delay your troubleshooting a
little for this issue.

control panel, scheduled tasks, delete the shadow copy tasks.
Then rt-clk any drive, properties, SC's. Do you get the error? (I'm
wondering about the link between the SC settings and scheduled tasks)
Disable any SC's (all drives).
Restart SBS (not sc service).

If it fixes the error you can re-enable SC's and the sched tasks will be
recreated..

this discussion also makes me think that removing Migrate Easy may help.
