I'm re-installing SBS 2003, and after it gets to the part where you choose
components (Exchange, Fax, etc.) and tell it where you want to store the
Users Shared Folders and other paths, I click "Next", and the Wizard
disappears. There's no error or anything.
If I try to "Continue" installing SBS 2003, it asks again for the company
address, which components I want and the paths...and disappears again. It
doesn't matter if I use the default paths or specify my own--it just fails.
Rebooting hasn't helped, and I tried to re-install again, but now the
install routine can't load "iastor.sys" from the floppy for the Intel-based
RAID. (Stupid floppies!)
So, if I get a new floppy disk, copy the RAID controller back and try
installing again, does anyone have any idea why the Wizard would fail after
choosing paths? I did notice that SBS downloaded about a dozed "updates"
even before I got to this point--they're listed in "Add/Remove". I'm
wondering if any of those could be conflicting with the Wizard. When I
re-install this time, I won't allow the updates.
Thanks.

Steve

Yes, I would also suspect the 'updates' as being the problem.

Hi Steve:

Surprisingly, for a test I installed SBS 2003 R2 CD1, stopped the setup,
installed the machine drivers, then Windows SP2 and then continued the
installation. I expected the installation to fail, but it did not. The
several fixes for SBS after SP2 had to be installed, but the installation
completed as advertized.

This SBS set includes SBS SP1, but the R2 bit has nothing to do with it, as
the R2 technologies are add ons.

I would very much like to know what version of SBS you are using, and what
happens if you remove the patch cable from the internet. I have always
thought you should not be connected to the inet as you do the install, or
even after until the AV is installed.

Please let us know the outcome.

Larry,
I tried a fresh install of SBS 2003 (original version, no service packs)
again, and had the same problem again. This time, I made sure no updates were
installed.
I tried to finish the Setup in "Safe Mode" (having tried everything else),
and of course, that didn't work at all. I couldn't even launch the Wizard.
After the Wizard died the first time, I ran the "Continue" icon again, but
unless you're connected to the network, it won't continue. I plugged it in to
the LAN to get past the screen where I choose what I want to install, and
then I removed the LAN cable. Still didn't work.
The only entry in the event log is for "WIZARDUI.DLL" crashing. There's no
mention of why, and even though the machine tries to send an error report to
Microsoft, it can't. I don't really care about that, but I'd like to finish
an installation!
There's nothing that loads automatically at startup that I can
disable--there's literally nothing in the list. I'm not ready to turn off
services, since they should be fine out of the box. No other third-party
software is loaded.
This same version of SBS 2003 was installed on this computer two days
earlier. It was failing, but it obviously had been installed. Nothing has
changed. I'm just re-installing because most of SBS's reports and
configuration tools no longer worked.

Normally, you would leave the SBS NIC plugged into a live hub or switch for
the entire install process. That hub/switch should not be connected to the
Internet or any other devices (it should just be turned on). Have you tried
that?

Make sure your server is completely disconnected from the internet, and that
you're installing to a fresh, clean partition with plenty of room.

If you continue to fail, I'd suspect the media.

I'm sorry, that's what I meant to say.
This machine has one NIC, so we're using the Linksys router for DHCP. The
server has a static IP address (I've at least gotten that far in the setup),
and is connected to the Linksys.
I was just noting that I tried to finish the setup with and without network
access.

Could be the updates - i haven't seen this problem before. I suggest you
check the event logs for clues as well as the SBS setup log files.

Charlie,
I can't complete the installation while being completely disconnected from
the Internet/network. SBS won't allow me to continue unless it gets a TCP/IP
address, it says.
I've deleted/recreated the partition twice, reformatted three times, and I
still can't complete the setup.

I tried to make sure there were no updates. I turned off "automatic updates"
as soon as it booted the first time--but somehow they got in.
I'll rip them all out (even though I have to reboot after each one), and let
you know how it goes.
There are only a couple of entries in the logs, none of which refer to the
Wizard failing, or anything like that. There's only a couple referring to
Active Directory (and how things can't connect), but I expect some things,
since the whole process isn't finished yet.

By the way, the only entry in the Application log after the Wizard fails now
is "Product: Windows Small Business Server Licensing - Configuration
completed successfully."
The other logs refer to Active Directory not being set up completely, which,
again, is expected.

Hi Steve,

SBS should not be "getting a TCP/IP address". You should be setting up the
NIC with a static IP address. The switch/hub should not be connected to any
other device when you install SBS. After installation of all components,
you connect an Internet device (broadband router) to the switch and then run
CEICW (Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard) to complete the SBS
setup. SBS likes it best when it handles all DHCP services. NOTE: If it
sees another device that is handling DHCP, the SBS DHCP service will shut
down in favor of letting that device handle DHCP for the LAN.

RE: SBS 2003 Setup fails after choosing install paths by planetearth

Well, I removed all the updates that "Automatic Updates" threw in during the
installation, ran the "Continue Setup" again...and it still doesn't work.
The only two entries in the Application event log around the time of the
failure are "svchost (972) the database engine stopped" and then the one
that states that Windows SBS licensing configuration completed successfully.
All the updates have been removed, and all
non-standard, non-essential hardware has been removed.
Since I've reformatted and reinstalled a few times already, I'm at a
loss--and in a serious predicament. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance....

What Merv said. ;)

Make sure your NIC is connected to a switch or hub so that it "sees" a
network, but NOT connected through to the Internet.

Laz, it's simple mate, no need to overcomplicate things.

Take a bare system.
Start with CD1 and finish with R2 (that's CD's 1-4, and Outlook, then R2).
Works _every_ time. (did _again_ for me just a few days ago. Brand new SBS
'includes SP2' media. R2, full implementation.)

Merv (and you Larry) are _AFAIK_ right, it's Steve's application of updates
while he was at the 'complete OS' part but before the 'complete SBS' that
has caused his problem.

The _only_ thing you should do between CD1 and CD4 (+Outlook, unless you
tell the wiz not to) is device drivers(may be necessary) and HDD
partitioning (highly desirable).
