Hello-

I would like to set up a basic non admin account for my clerks to use
that would essentially lock down the workstation which is a cash
register/POS machine.

What I am interested in doing is preventing access to changing the
time and using internet explorer, etc....but allowing the third party
programs (cc processing, etc) to access the internet.

The computer logs into a domain at the current moment...could someone
just point me in the right direction...is there a way to do this
without setting up complicated group policies, etc?

Thanks
SD

Preventing a user from running IE but still allowing a third-party app
internet access would require some "complicated" customization. There is
now quick and easy method.

I'd take them out of the domain

And use
Windows SteadyState
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx
to lock down the PC into a KIOSK mode.

You can lock down a PC really good with it.
And with easy to use configuration menu.

Cliff Look at
Windows SteadyState
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx

A wonderful tool that will turn a PC into a nice Locked down KIOSK

I'll admit that I haven't looked at this product in awhile (certainly
haven't tried 2.5 yet) but based on my experience with previous versions as
well as looking at the 2.5 handbook, special care and configuration must
still be taken to make it play nice in a domain. They dedicate an entire
chapter to it, in fact. So I was comfortable saying that there was no
quick-and-easy. Of course each person has a different bar for measuring
quick-and-easy. :) j So thanks for reminding me it is out there...

Well that's why I suggest Taking it out of the Domain.
Yes it's not EASY
but it's worth it IMO for a PC you don't want someone to @##@$
Especially in a POS configuration.

:)

There are Many Third party programs that cost money, the Microsoft one is
free (At least I think it is)
and it has a lot of granularity. like no use of CD rom no use of Run command
etc.

You can set up a PC that only has 1 Icon on the desktop and that's it
(CTRL-ALT-DEL is disabled even.)
