Over the past 6 months I have started to see instances of event ID 1
appearing in my application log for the SBS 2003 server. The errors only
appear at 10pm which is when the backup of this server begins (using Backup
Exec software). After lots of research some weeks ago I thought I had managed
to track down this issue to a know Microsoft one which had a Hotfix
available. I registered with them for the Hotfix and then got told (some
weeks later) that it wasn't available for SBS2003.

I am still getting the errors every night at 10pm when the backup begins.
There appear to be FIVE entries per SQL instance ranging from SOPHOS to
SBSMONITORING. Here is an example
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SQLVDI: Loc=CVDS::Cleanup. Desc=Release(ClientAliveMutex).
ErrorCode=(288)Attempt to release mutex not owned by caller.
. Process=4628. Thread=9320. Client. Instance=SOPHOS. VD=.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All other entries are exactly the same apart from the "Instance". These vary
between:
SOPHOS
SHAREPOINT
SBSMONITORING
MSFW (there are about 10 of these instead of just 4)
BKUPEXEC

Does anyone have a definitive answer on these entries at all? I keep reading
that they are "known" but why do they appear, is there not a workaround fix,
or something?

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you get event error 1
about SQLVDI when you backup your SBS. If I have misunderstood the problem,
please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I think the hotfix you mentioned is the KB934396.
This hotfix could install on SBS 2003, since you have SQL server 2000 (SBS
2003) or SQL server 2005 (SBS 2003 R2).

However, when you apply the hotfix, please input SQL server 2000 or SQL
server 2005, but not SBS 2003.

I suggest apply the following htofix to see if we can resolve this issue:

FIX: Error messages and an event may be logged when you use the Virtual
Device Interface in SQL Server 2005 or in SQL Server 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=934396

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Do you get the same error when you run the SBS backup or NTbackup?

2. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)

Terence,

Thanks for your reply. I applied to Microsoft for the hotfix and after being
told THREE times that it was not for my product, they finally sent the link
through to me. It was about 100MB file. When I extracted this file and tried
to install on my SBS 2003 I got an error message about an invalid
installation and it could not continue.

After doing more research on this I have found that there is another smaller
hotfix which may work for me. The file is called 308282_ENU_i386_zip and
someone else on the SBS 2003 forum said this worked ok for them. I've also
read about Microsoft sending out the wrong hotfix and stuff too. Do you know
where I could locate this hotfix perhaps?

In answer to your questions:

1. Yes I get the same error through the SBS Backup or through Backup Exec
2. I am just in the process of running that report now so as soon as it
finishes I will email over to you.

Thanks.

Terence,

Thanks for your reply. I asked Microsoft for the hotfix as per your link
and they have told me that they can find no such file.
Is it possible for you to send the hotfix to me myself? The SBS 2003 server
runs SQL 2005.

Thanks a lot.

| Terence,
|
| Thanks for your reply. I asked Microsoft for the hotfix as per your link
| and they have told me that they can find no such file.
| Is it possible for you to send the hotfix to me myself? The SBS 2003
server

| Thanks a lot.
