Dear all,

A client's Dell server is reaching its 5 years and Dell won't renew
the warranty on it. I am thinking about to purchase a new server and
migrate "SBS2K3 Premium" from the current server to the new one.

So we have two options when purchasing the new OS, either "SBS2K3 R2
Premium" or "SBS2K8 Premium". The client is running a LOB software
based on SQL2000, so we do need Premium.

"SBS2K3 R2 Premium" has SQL2005 which has been tested okay with the
LOB software. But I am not sure how long MS will still support it.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

If they get SBS2003R2 with SA
They get some benefits and you do also

You may run into install problems if you are dealing with an OEM install on
the Dell server. As you should know, OEM licenses are for the original
hardware, changing to a new server is possibly, most likely out of scope.

That not withstanding, if you are doing anyway - the cheapest way would be
to go with restoring to the new server, I'm not sure how new hardware, M/B,
etc would react to the OEM DVD.

The new version of SBS 2008 is outfitted on 2 servers. MS has recognized
that its just a little 'tight' as far as performance, process isolation,
when everything is on one server. I have worked with RTM version of SBS
2008, just the fact that it is installed on 2008 base, means it is much more
stable, flexible than current 2003 version.

I would either up grade to 2003 R2 or go for the big Kahuna, SBS 2008. There
is little reason to just go with same o same when there are much more
effective alternatives, no need to waste the effort.

Remember SBS as well as EBS, will work better as 64 bit.

If the LOB application does not come with its own licensed copy of SQL 2000
and CALs then I'd recommend purchasing SBS2k3 premium with SA.

SBS2k8 premium will come with SQL server 2008 which *may not work* with your
LOB app if it hasn't been updated. So at least with SA you have the option
to migrate after testing, but can stick with what you have if you need to.
You can even run SBS 2k8 and install win2k3 and SQL 2005 on a second server
using SBS2k8 premium's second license if necessary.

There's also the downgrade rights to consider. A new little twist on this is
the number of CALs involved as SBS2K8 has 1 CAL packs and the price point of
2K3+SA over SBS2K8 with downgrade can be important factors.

All of this assumes the dying server is an OEM license and not a retal or
volume license purchase.

Sorry I didn't read that they had SBS2k already..
(I read your Subject and I thought NEW )

Like Beowolf says OEM can not be moved to a new server in your case.

However, If you do go new
SA does have some nice offers for premium users now.

I was in the weekly SBSC Meeting this morning and a MS rep said something
like you'd get SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 and ISA 2006 if you did this.
It sounded too good to be true but worth looking into IMO.

It's my understanding as well, but the downgrade is an all or nothing, not

With premium you get the second server license and I've been told from
several MS reps that you can exercise downgrade rights on just the second
server. So that'd be Win2k3 (not SBS) and SQL Server 2005. To be in
compliance, you can't run SQL Server 2k8 on your SBS2k8 box AND SQL2k5...it
is one or the other, but as I understand you can downgrade just the second
box just fine.

SBS2KR2 Premium with SA > SBS2008 Premium + SQL500 + SQL 2008 + ISA 2006

UGH! Who knows..

Yeah, I think ISA was a 'make good' for premium customers and I think the
second sever downgrade could be used for ISA. Kinda doubtfull about the SQL
pieces though, especially running two at the same time.

Licensing FAQ should have something on this but I still have a few isuess
with that content. Use the MS licensing contacts posted earlier today for
the most authoritave answers.

Just to be sure we understand each other, "For the migration scenario from
Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 to Windows Small Business Server 2008,
a manual migration will be required. More information will be provided in
the future."
http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/en/us/system-requirements.aspx

This means that SBS 2008 (production use) will require deployment on 64 bit
architecture, so there is no option to "upgrade in place" from a 32 bit
(x89) install; the second server (SQL) can be either. This is one reason you
may want to run a software, driver, hardware compatibility utility before
moving to SBS 2008. You can still run SBS 2003 R2 in 32 or 64 bit.
Especially, run the compatibility checker against your LOB application to be
certain it will work. You have time to contact vendor for a 64 bit version
before jumping into something that will increase your anxiety factor.

However it is not a manual migration. There is a migration wizard that is
part of SBS 2008

You're best bet is SBS 2003 R2 Premium with SA

Just to be clear as the seems to be some confusion. Downgrade Rights are
for the whole Suite, it is not ala carte.
SQL 2005 will only be allowed to be used in SBS 2008 until SQL 2008 RTMs

I see you are a MVP, so maybe you can help me understand how you can migrate
a 32 bit install onto a 64 bit architecture? There would seem to be an issue
with drivers, as well.

I do admit that I assumed the current install listed by the OP was SBS 2003
on 32 bit, though it doesn't necessarily have to be. That was the basis for
my suggesting that in place upgrade even with a Wizard, would not be
possible.

There is no inplace upgrade available, you have to have new hardware OR you
could introduce a VM of SBS 2008 and run the installation of SBS 2008 in
migration mode which brings over your AD, etc. Then if the original
hardware is 64 bit compatible, you can run the install of SBS 2008 again, in
migration mode, and migrate everything back to the original hardware

Yes, I have - that was the basis for my reply. No where did it show a
migration from SBS 2003, 32 bit to SBS 2008. As I said, SBS 2008 is 64 bit
only.

I'm sure that there are some undocumented methods to make at least a partial
carryover of some settings, but none that I could find that show a
"Wizard-based" in place migration path. I'm just not sure its possible 32
bit to 64 bit. I'm thinking there are just too many possible gottcha's

So, essentially, I would suggest going with SBS 2003 R2 as a method to carry
over until SBS 2008 is 'proven' in the market. No need to inject a lot of
changes ( new software and 64 bit transition at the same time). When it
comes to production, I am old school, one major change at a time; it keeps
down the confusion and allows you a more focused approach when it comes to
troubleshooting the invariable occurrence of inevitable muck-ups.

A possible work around with premium, might be to keep the second server (SBS
2008 does offer a second server license as part of the package) and install
the SQL 2000 server on that second box. I do know that ESB (now at 3 or 4
servers, when installing SQL) does allow 32 bit that as an option, since
many clients are either not able or not ready to move to 64 bit SQL.

Thank you all very much for the constructive discussions.

I will go with SBS2003 R2 Premium, this migration path makes me feel
more comfortable.

I will not purchase SA though. After a few years, i will purhcase a
new server with new OS.

thanks again and have a good day,

jack
