We have one NIC in the server and no wireless. There are four wired
workstations running WinXP Pro plus the server. Main function is Outlook.

In addition to Outlook, we the internet to download data from some
subscription services related to our business.

What prompted the replacement is that we have had very poor internet
connection for the past two weeks. We have no problem with network
connection (Outlook, Word/Excel docs, etc), just the internet. Qwest was
here and the DSL line is fine. If we plug a laptop or free-standing computer
directly to the Qwest gateway box, no problems. If we plug a laptop or
free-standing computer into the MN-100, the internet blows.

Examples:
- open IE and it says "Looking for MSN.com", then "Waiting for MSN.com" and
then the page will finally show up - same with any other URL.
- click on a link on any page and the page usually will not come up the
first time - IE says maybe you're not connected to the Internet - but hit
refresh or back button and same link again and the page comes up.

So, it appears that the MN-100 is failing somewhere. Thanks for any replies.

Understand that the MN-100 is a home (consumer) class (as opposed to a =
business class) device and provides only the most basic firewall =
protection.
Anything you would purchase in the same price only provides the same =
level of protection...very minimal despite it including the words =

If you are willing to accept those risks..then you can go to best buy =
and get just about any router.

If you want higher end true firewall protection...then let us know and =

Hi Tim,

Depending on your budget, i would recommend a Vigor 2800/2820. You can =
get these for around =C2=A3150ish and they are excellent products!

If you are looking for a lower end device with reasonably decent =
features, try a Billion http://www.billion.com/. They are cheaper, but =
we have found they dont hold VPN Connections very well (but if you are =
not using those, then you will be OK)

Cris...

I'm not opposed to moving to a business class device - the MN-100 was in
place when I started working here. However, neither our server nor our
workstations have any critical data, client info, etc., so we don't need Fort
Knox either. Bring on the recommendations.

Also, based upon my description of the internet problem, do you agree that
it's probably the MN-100? Thanks.

I ran into a similar situation with a Netgear router the other day. so =
probably right on track

Since you're not doing wireless...no reason to get a wireless router

Here is an option to throw out

If you want a unit that goes to the next level and does Unified Threat =
Managment (virus, spam, etc.) before it gets to the server as well
Then you can go with this
http://www.calyptix.com/ae500.php

And there are options in between

Crisâ?¦

Thanks for the help. I picked up a D-Link EBR-2310 router and a D-Link
DSS-16+ switch. Other than shutting down everything before I start
unplugging old stuff and plugging in new stuff, do you have any suggestions
as to procedure (such as order of turning back on, configuring, etc.)? Also,
any comment on the two pieces of equipment? I'll probably do this on
Saturday morning.

Tim

Should be
Router then server then workstations
Switch can be lit up all the time

Remember when configuring the router that it only needs to forward Ports
25
443
444 (if you want access to companyweb from the outside)
4125
3389 (if you want direct RDP)

Port 80 should not be open!

This is a consumer class router, not a business class though
