Hi All,

Currently have SBS2003 in main office with 15 clients. We also have a
satellite office with 4 users who have a SBS2000 server and they access
email via RPC over HTTP using outlook 2003. This works well but the SBS200
server needs replacing and I have a replacement server with two NICs and a
new Windows 2003 server OS. I don't need it as a remote DC but just need to
set it up so users can continue to access the main server via RPC over HTTP.

I am used to SBS2003 so not sure how to set up the windows 2003 server. Do I
set up DHCP then run DCPromo to set up AD then add my four users? I want to
be able to occasionally access the remote server via VPN do I need to do
anything else. There is no firewall except what comes with Windows 2003 and
the router. Charity application so cost is an issue here. Any guides for
setting up the W2003 server would be a great help as I'm spoilt by all the
wonderful wizards in SBS.

Cheers, David

I suggest that there are various reasons to mak the remote server a DC and
do as discussed by Marina:

Thanks Supergumby
Sorry about the double thread, (oops)
The ADSL connection is only basic 8mb download and 1Mb upload so I would
have though not suitable to be an effective remote DC.
cost is an issue so its keeping the soultion simple if possible.
Cheers, david

changes to an SBS AD are not going to cause a lot of traffic between HQ and
remote DC.

By making the remote a DC (and GC) the remote workstations will use it for
logon and AD queries, probably resulting in less overall traffic and
allowing the remote office to function should the link go down.

Hello Dave,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank SuperGumby for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you want to replace the
SBS 2000 with Windows server 2003 to work as network gateway for the 4
clients. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let
me know.

Based on my research, you do not want to join the windows server 2003 to
SBS 2003 domain. Therefore the windows server 2003 is a standard windows
domain controller. I suggest you repost your issue in windows server
newsgroup for help.

Windows server AD newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.server.active_directory
Windows server networking newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.server.networking

Personally, I want to show some general suggestions:

1. You need to run the windows server 2003 as DHCP and DNS and gateway of
the office for the 4 clients.
2. You can run dcpromo to make the windows server 2003 to be DC and join
the 4 clients to the domain
3. You need to manually configure the RRAS on the windows server 2003 to
work as NAT gateway for clients to access external VPN and RPC over HTTP
and Internet.

If you do not need domain environment in the satellite office, you can make
the 4 clients work in workgroup, and buy a broadband router replace the 2
NIC windows server 2003 to work as DHCP, DNS and Gateway. I think this will
reduce the cost.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)
