Hi everyone,
I've recently installed and configured a server with SBS2003 Standard =
edition plus all the updates and patches etc and I'm now working my way =
down a very small list of known problems, trying to fix each one as I =
go.

To the best of my knowledge I've configured the Internet & Email =
Configuration wizard correctly and I can send out test emails from =
within the network accounts to addresses outside the network, for =
example my Hotmail & Yahoo accounts and the mail is received just fine, =
but when I send a test email from any of these email accounts (Hotmail =
or Yahoo) to a user inside the SBS network, the mail is not arriving and =
no message is received to indicate what the problem may be (at least not =
yet anyway).

Is there anything else that I should configure on the SBS box to allow =
external email to come into the network and be delivered to the correct =
user? I can send email from one user to another user inside the network =
just fine so I know all of the internal email accounts are setup and =
working properly, they just don't seem to be able to receive external =
email at the moment and I'm not quite sure why.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or if something is glaringly obvious =
that I may have missed, I really would be very grateful of your feedback =
- I only have a few small issues that I'm trying to resolve and =
everything else is working great.

Many thanks in advance
Wayne

from outside the LAN
you should go to a command prompt and type

telnet mail.domainname.com 25

Now where I have typed mail.domainname.com you will substitue whatever =
you created for your MX record

Assuming that your max record is setup correctly and Port 25 is being =
passed by the fire wall to the SBS server, you should get a nice =
response back from the Exchange server

Otherwise you will get a message that the server failed to respond

Hi everyone,
I've recently installed and configured a server with SBS2003 =
Standard edition plus all the updates and patches etc and I'm now =
working my way down a very small list of known problems, trying to fix =
each one as I go.

Is there anything else that I should configure on the SBS box to =
allow external email to come into the network and be delivered to the =
correct user? I can send email from one user to another user inside the =
network just fine so I know all of the internal email accounts are setup =
and working properly, they just don't seem to be able to receive =
external email at the moment and I'm not quite sure why.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or if something is glaringly =
obvious that I may have missed, I really would be very grateful of your =
feedback - I only have a few small issues that I'm trying to resolve and =
everything else is working great.

Many thanks in advance
Wayne

Re: Problems Receiving Email into SBS Exchange by airwrck

Hi Wayne - lots of possibilities

1. The public MX record for your domain is not working properly. The
way to test this is to use nslookup on a workstation, in this form:

nslookup
server 4.2.2.2 <-- this is a public DNS server so you're not
accidentlly using your internal SBS DNS to do the lookup, just in case
your internal DNS is serving "domain.com" to the inside
set type=3Dmx
domain.com <-- this is the domain you want to check the MX record for

This result gives you a name and an MX priority. To resolve the name,

set type=3Da
mail.domain.com <-- this is the result you got from the MX query

Make sure it matches the outside IP address of your router.

2. Router port forwarding
The SBS needs to have traffic forwarded from the router WAN port to
the SBS server on certain ports (25, 80, 443, 444, 4125) in order to
receive traffic from the Internt. Here is the link from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/plan/gsg/appx_c.mspx

On the Linksys routers, it's under the "Applications and Gaming" tab.
On Netgear and other routers, it's called Port Forwarding. On the
Netopia routers, it's Configure > Advanced > Pinhole. On SonicWalls
its in the Firewall configuration.

Good luck!

After re-reading the initial post, it may not even be an issue of the =
port. I don't see a mention of DNS at all. Could be as simple as an =
old MX record pointing to an ISP server.

from outside the LAN
you should go to a command prompt and type

telnet mail.domainname.com 25

Now where I have typed mail.domainname.com you will substitue =
whatever you created for your MX record

Assuming that your max record is setup correctly and Port 25 is being =
passed by the fire wall to the SBS server, you should get a nice =
response back from the Exchange server

Otherwise you will get a message that the server failed to respond
