    - Reverting back I need to remove two Win XP Pro and one Vista workstation from SBS 2003 and set them back to the state before migrating them to the server. Is there a way to do this?     - RWW and Terminal Servers Hello, In the last 3 months we have had two terminal servers go down on us in our remote offices. Unfortunately, whenever this happens, until the server is removed from AD, our RWW is rendered useless. It hangs looking for the broken server.     - backup strategy Hi All, I have to come up with a formal backup strategy. I've never had to do this sort of thing working for mom and pop shops. However, I'm with a company that requires alot of structure and documentation (which no one has bothered to do before me). So I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share a strategy or two. I'd really appreciate the help as I grow into working in bigger IT arena's.     - How can I get ntbackup to save 5 versions of my backup file like it I'm using SBS backup to perform my nightly backups and it works just great. There's an option in the wizard to tell it to keep 5 backups which I love because you never know. I need to run a scheduled NTbackup (because I can only run a single sbs backup right?) to backup a large (70gb) folder of pictures. I don't want these in my nightly backup but once a week I'd like to capture these in a seperate backup. I'd also like to keep a few versions of this backup similar to the 5 I keep in sbs backup. Question: How can I do this using ntbackup and the windows scheduler? Is there an automated way, or do I need to write a batch file? Believe me, I've done this more than once, but I thought ntbackup might have the functionality built-in since SBS backup seems to be able to do it.     - Mapped drive capacity I have a windows small business server with two hard drives. I am sharing the root of the second ( Data ) drive. When I map a drive letter to this share, windows XP reports the capacity as 1.0 gb with only a few kilobytes free. This drive is a 50 gb drive with 35gb free. Normally I would not care what XP reports as the capacity or free space but when I try to save a word file to the mapped drive XP is telling me that there is not enough free space.     - Cannot connect client to server 2003 My customers network disconnected 2 clients that were connected about 10 day ago. I deleted and reinstalled the computer accounts and even created new ones but I still cannot connect. None of the methods I used were able to connect them so I formatted and reinstalled all of the applications and tried to connect them again. I keep getting the message "the server cannot complete the request." or "the domain cannot find an account for this computer" I checked and the server can see the computers after I put them on a "workgroup" but I still cannot connect. The clients can ping the server with no problem. The NIC information is all identical to the server except of course for the static IP addresses.     - Transition Pack for SBS 2003 OEM to Windows 2003 Standard Greetings, I have a domain setup with SBS 2003 Premium SP1 as the Primary Domain Controller. The version of SBS that we have is an OEM that came with the computer from Dell and we do not have software assurance. We do have the maximum number (75) user CALs for SBS. I would like to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 Standard to remove the user limit (and other) restrictions. I would also like to purchase additional CALs to have a total of about 150. After completing the upgrade, I would like to split Exchange off of the SBS machine onto a new computer. A separate SQL Workstation server operating under a processor license is already available on the network so we do not really need a separate SQL Workstation license. The best route appears to be purchasing the SBS 2003 Premium Transition Pack, 75 Transition Pack CALs, 75 Windows Server 2008 CALs, and 75 Exchange 2007 Standard CALs. However, I have a few questions about this process: * Can the Windows Server 2003 Premium Transition pack be applied to the OEM version of SBS? * If yes, would the stand alone licenses provided by the transition pack be retail or OEM? Mainly I am interested in whether we would have transfer rights for the stand alone licenses Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, etc. or if they must all still be installed on that same Dell computer. *Is there a transition pack still available for SBS 2003 SP1, or would we have to upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium R2 before using the transition pack? If I must upgrade, would there be any licensing problems with applying the upgrade to the OEM SBS version? *If yes to the first two questions, would it be possible to add Software Assurance to the retail licenses I receive once we purchase the transition pack and if so would this allow me to upgrade to Exchange 2007 and Windows Server 2008? *Could I also add SA to the transition pack CALs and if so would this allow me to upgrade them to Exchange 2007 and Windows 2008 CALs?     - Connecting to Exchange... I have recently installed SBS2003 on a Dell PowerEdge server. I cannot ping my server or connect to Exchange with Outlook, however, I can log in to Exchange/OWA via a web browser using the server's static IP or DNS name. I am not using anything else about SBS except Exchange at this point. I have another router providing DHCP and don't want anything else running except Exchange. I currently have the main SBS page redirected to only the OWA page. Can anyone help me through the process of figuring out why I can't ping or access the server with Outlook?     - offline files SBS 2003, XP Pro. Laptops are setup to enable offline files when configuring, workstations are not (I hate the things, major PITA, but users need their stuff when out of office with the laptops). Their My Documents are redirected via SBS GPO, and syn, but nothing else unless they manually select stuff. So far for a couple years, no real headaches, except for having to explain to people that Access databases and psts won't sync, and to manually make a copy if they need it when traveling. Starting yesterday, one user, DaveD, is suddenly sycing offline files with a different user, KathyS's My Documents when loggin off and on (as well as their own). He has local admin rights, and can change any of his own Offline File settings, including turning off completely, or selecting which of his My Document's folders to sync - but he can't get rid of the Make Available Offline checkmark on KathyS\KathyS's Documents or any of the subdirectories - the option is checked off but greyed out. KathyS has not logged on to this laptop in months. We deleted her profile on the laptop, cleared all offline folder cache, turned offline files off and rebooted, then on logging back in to the domain turned offline files back on - and again, her documents folder and subfolders are checked and cannot be unchecked. For now, DaveD has disabled offline files completely, as KathyS has massive amounts of crap he has no need of and it's taking an incredible amount of time to sync, but I need a solution ASAP as he is going on the road Weds and won't have internet access where he's going. (yes he could manually copy the stuff he needs, but... ) I've double checked that there is nothing defined for offline files via rsop.msc, and can't find anything - as I said, this just started yesterday, and nothing has been changed as to GPOs.     - Configuring SBS2003 for OWA and RWW I've tried to setup Outlook Web Access to operate on an SBS2003 server, but failed. I've read all I can find online and in my 2 SBS books. This is the process I've gone through: - Created a domain record for e.g. mail.name.com to forward to the external IP address (this is also used for incoming smtp) - Run CEICW + Single NIC via Router to Internet (so No Firewall) + Selected OWA and RWW as the only 2 web services + Created a certificate for mail.mydomainname.com - Edited the directory security for the default website to allow all IP addresses (why doesn't the wizard do this?) - Created Port Forwards from the external IP address to the server internal IP address: + 25, 80, 443, 444, 1723, 4125, 3389 When I use http://mail.name.com externally, I get the Welcome page. This has options for: 1- My Company's Internal Website (http://companyweb/) 2- Network Configuration Wizard (http://mail.name.com/ConnectComputer) 3- Remote Web Workplace (http://mail.name.com/Remote) 4- Information & Answers (http://mail.name.com/ClientHelp) When I click on 3 I get an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error in IE7. I've turned off friendly error messages in the IE7 client. On the server itself, if I use the full domain name I get "There is a problem with this website's security certificate." If I click continue to website I get a 404 error. If I use the NETBIOS name internally it works fine, so I think it must be something to do with security settings somewhere. Everyday at around 10.00am I have to restart MS Exchange relate services. Users complain that their outlook is disconnected and can send/receive.     - Laptop User and Folder Redirection Hello and thanks for reading, A client has a SBS 2003 Premium network setup, fully configured and running for almost 2 years & patched up to SP2. The directors of this client all have laptops and spend a significant amount of time away from the office on business, and use the 'Connect to Small Business Server' VPN client in order to access a shared folder (Z:) on the SBS server, and to synchronise their My Documents folder with the server (Folder Redirection set up as per defaults via the Wizard). A particular director has been having issues with his laptop where if he is away from the network for any period of time his laptop 'forgets' the Folder Redirection policy and reverts the path to being on his C: drive, with the contents of the folder being empty. He also loses the 'Synchronize' option available on right-clicking on the My Documents icon on the desktop and the 'Offline Files' tab under My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options is also missing. After this had happened previously I came up with the workaround of creating a shortcut on his desktop directly to his folder under \\SBS\Users so that he was still able to access his documents, but this according to him is very slow. I also set up a group policy for his laptop disabling Slow Link Detection as I'd done a little research & it seemed to be a factor in this issue occuring. This occurred recently while he was abroad on business and I suggested he try running 'gpupdate /force' and also 'mobsync /logon' from the Command Prompt after first establishing a VPN connection to the server. Neither of these resolved the issue. As soon as he returned back to the office and connected via the internal LAN the Folder Redirection re-established itself. Any suggestions?     - OT: connecting my USB drive to my UPS I have recently put my SBS system on an APC Smart UPS (1500va) and all is working well (thanks to this forum for the advice ref choice of UPS) - using PowerChute Business. However, I'd like to also protect my external USB drive by connecting it to the UPS - firstly is this recommended? Secondly, how would I go about doing this? I'm in the UK and the USB drive has a power adapter (basically the adapter plugs directly into the mains to step down the voltage to the required amount). The rear of the UPS has the standard 3 pin connectors, and obviously the USB power adaptor isn't going to fit... do i need to botch up some sort of 4-way extension cable that will plug into the UPS and which I can then plug the USB adaptor into...     - SBS Exchange w/POP3 and Blackberry users I am running SBS and pulling email from an externally hosted domain via POP3 into my SBS Exchange. Have a user with a new Blackberry. They are getting the mail fine by pulling from the externally hosted email. But, the mail that is internal to the network and does not route outside of SBS is not pulling into Blackberry.     - VPN and Port issue I have a client that I just set up for VPN. RWW is also set up using 2 NIC's. They have an issue with VPN in that it has a problem when trying to run Mastercam, which is run from a NetHasp. This is really not the issue. The issue is that someone sold them a Sonicwall and they MUST have it use port 443. The problem is that 443 is the default for RWW, which also needs to work. I have tried to set the the Default Web Site port to another port, but I have to run the ICW to change the Certificate routing. Once I have done this, without changing the Firewall settings, the Default Web Site port automatically reverts back to 443.     - Wireless connects but only partially -- I have just installed a wireless network adapter on a new Vista PC setting up the user with the WirelessUser Template. My Vista network sharing center indicates I have access to local and internet, however, I cannot see any of the other users I usually see when I was hard wired except for myself and I have no access to the internet. Iâ??m not certain configuring Remote Access is a prerequisite since Iâ??m not really using a VPN; I have stayed away from configuring this feature because the hard wired users on the network lose the internet when I run the wizard.     - User Denied Sending E-mail Hello, All. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction! This is on SBS2003 Premium SP2 and Exchange SP2. Exchange database set at 50GB limit (about 25GB in size at this point). Ample space exists on the drives to host this data. I have a single user (on Vista 32bit, Outlook 2007) who can not send e-mail, but still receives e-mail fine. No other users are affected. When attempting to send e-mail, a message appears saying that user was over limit. After confirming that she had deleted down to the limit, still has the same message. As a test, I went to the Exchange General tab on the user and unchecked the 'Limit' boxes, and still no outbound e-mail as the 'Over limit' message is still displayed.     - Purchasing a new SBS box It is time to replace my 7 year old server with a new one. Our current one is wheezing like a two pack a day smoker running a marathon. For monetary reasons I have to purchase a Dell. Can anyone weigh in on specific hardware requirements they would recommend. We currently have a raid 10 configuration, so I guess we would need to keep a controller and the necessary drives in the mix. We are a very poor organization, so keep that in mind.     - General Tab does not register upgrade After upgrading to Windows 2003 SBS R2 from SP1, I checked the General Tab in the System Properties.     - VPN Assistance I have a client that I am trying to set up VPN for. RWW works fine, and the Routing and Remote Access wizard has been run and is enabled. However, When I try to VPN I can not get through. I have a Cisco PIX 501 Firewall and have run the VPN wizard on that as well. I am a bit confused in that the Cisco router must have an IP range for DHCP enetered. When I try to connect to the VPN from the internal network, I get Error 733, but if I select accept it connects.     - Proper Router Routing, Two IP addresses? Hi, We're moving to a new office, and I'm trying to figure out if/why we need two IP addresses. We have SBS 2003, behind a Sonicwall TZ 170 Router. Someone else set up this network. Currently we have two IP addresses, one for the router and one for the mail server. I'm sure it was set up this way for a good reason? The other mystery is how our router is set up. The router's WAN port goes directly to the DSL modem. The router's "OPT. ZONE" port goes into the NIC card on our server. The router's normal, numbered port goes into our hub. The server's integrated NIC goes into the hub, and it's NIC card goes to the router. Why would it have been set up this way? Isn't the router supposed to be in between the outside world and the network? It's plugged directly into the hub. And the server is plugged into both the router and the hub - why is that necessary?     - SBS2003 - Migration Pack Good afternoon! Okay, feeling a bit dense. So, pleaes pardon the ignorance. Have a client (SBS2003 SP2 Standard) who is rapidly approaching the 75 user limit. Apparently my company has already purchased the migration pack. QUESTION: assuming 65 users at the moment (all of whom are licensed) we would have to purchase 65 "migration pack" licenes? If we had only 35 licenses users then we would need to purchase only 35 "migration pack" licenses.....but what happens with the other 30? Have to purchase the full blown licesnes for everything, correct? I do not know if my company has applied the migration pack already? QUESTION: how do I tell? Why asking? The person who may or may not have done this is no longer with the company and may or may not be willing/able to tell us (I have a pretty good relationship with him but may not ask....). Assuming that the migration pack has already been install: what do we do with the SBS2003 box? I told you I was feeling really dense about this!!!!!! I really need that specific box for a couple other things.... What we have already done (before I became involved with this account): -put in another EXCH2003 SP2 box -put in a Domain Controller All e-mail flows into and out of the "new" Exchange Server.     - SBS server cant browse internet, but can see lan Hi guys, i started a thread on this about a year ago and didn't get it resolved. running sbs 2003 single nic config backround: my server basically can't browse the internet. i cant ping www.yahoo.com from cmd prompt either. I can see all my workstations on the lan. the last time i posted this, i listed tcp/ip for both server and workstation configs and all was right. i had to add a public dns as secondary on all of my workstations so they could get out to the world and send pop email. all workstations can see and use shared drives on the server too. our central anti virus can't go out to get updates either. my question is: has anyone ever tried using winsock fix to rebuild tcp/ip stack on server? i'm trying my hardest not to reinstall. thanks in advance for any help. -mike Tag: SBS 2008 Premium 2nd server Tag: 400288

    - Tranisition Pack? Necessary? SBS 2003 R2 to Win Srv 2008 Our configuration is as follows. SBS 2003 SP2 - Nothing more than our domain controller, DNS, and DHCP. Exchange Server 2003 - We've always had a full blown Exchange server running on Windows Server 2003. NEW SERVER - Windows Server 2008. Already purchased appropriate CALs (an error on our part, but either way it's done). NOT YET CONNECTED TO DOMAIN, NOT YET PROMOED Goal: We want to decommission the SBS 2003 server entirely. NOT UPGRADE IT. We want to remove that server from our domain entirely and move to Windows Server 2008 which is on a brand new box. I'm hearing conflicting information. On Experts-Exchange I'm being told I MUST use the Transition Pack from Microsoft. Apparently this ALSO costs money. Because we have already purchased the necessary CALs Windows Server 2008, I don't want to spend more money on a transition pack. Mind you we also already have a full blown Exchange 2003 server which has been used since implementation of the SBS server. My question is MUST I use the transition pack? When I imported my rules and reset them I get this message: One or more rules cannot be uploaded to Microsoft Exchange and have been deactivated. Well I did a bonehead move and inadvertantly deleted the dbase when I did the uninstall.
