Good evening!

Simple question: with SBS2003 Premium OEM is it possible (not asking if it
is legal or not....I already know the answer to that question....there is a
reason that I am asking this question) to install SQL2000 on a different
box?

Thanks,

Cary

PS. Fully aware that that this is not legal - for a couple of reasons (1 -
OEM and 2 - EULA of SBS2003 Premium). Now, what if this were a retail
version of SBS2003 Premium? Or a Volume License version?

Hi Cary:

Will it install on another server?

Don't know, never tried it as it would break the EUlA and be worthless.

Does it matter what version of SBS?

Nope.

There are no versions of SBS that allow installation of any component on
separate hardware. It's not an OEM thing; you wouldn't be able to do it
legally with a retail or volume license copy either. I'm not sure if it's
technically possible or not - that would be a matter of whether the
installer checks to make sure you're installing it on an SBS or not. I
suspect you could get it installed, but have never tried it.

If you're looking for a reason not to buy OEM, IMO the biggest one is that
you can't move the license from the hardware it came installed on. I just
bought a Windows Server license for a member server because, when I bought
the original hardware, I foolishly bought OEM. If I had spent the small
amount extra for retail or volume license, I could have moved it over at no
additional cost when I upgraded the hardware.

The other thing with SBS is that it qualifies for volume license all by
itself. So if you buy SBS that way and then want to add other products
later, you don't have to hit the 5-license bar to get into open license.
You can just add single copies or whatever to the existing license you
opened with SBS.

I have a customer with SBS 2003 Std that has a dedicated SQL 2000 server
box, but they bought CPU licenses and don't use SBS licenses for it -
keep in mind that CPU licenses are about $4500 each.

I also have a customer with SBS 2003 where they are using SQL on the sbs
box, but they have a licensed version of Exchange 2003 running on a
different server, but they bought Exchange 2003 and cal's for it.

He has a new client with SBS2003 and an additional server in the domain
running SQL 2000, but he can't locate the SQL 2000 media/licenses.

I'm pretty good at reading between the lines but am also sometimes MILES

SuperGumby....

Not entirely wrong (first part is correct...only, not so new
anymore).....but not entirely correct (they need to have SQL2005 on the new
server but do not want to purchase!).

No worries. I am not installing anything illegally. Just trying to
convince the client that they need to purchase SQL2005 (which they really do
not want to do).

Isn't there a free version for application developers that would fill

Leythos,

In this case the client is using an application that requires MS-SQL. The
databases (there are two) are 4.9GB and 4.1GB in size....so, SQL Express is
not an option. Even if it were - from the application's perspective - due
to the size of the databases it is not.

SQL 2k5 workgroup comes with R2 if that will work?

I have one application, because of the way the developers built it, the
migration (restore a backup or attach the DB files) will not work in SQL
2005, but the application, if installed from scratch, works fine on SQL
2005. The old version that has been migrated used some stupid security
methods that caused massive problems with it's imported to SQL 2005.
