    - Blackberry vs Windows Mobile This is more of a general question. I have configured Windows Mobile 6 phones and it's quite easy with SBS 2003. Can I sync any/all folders I want including calendars and contacts? I want to do this syncing "over the air" via Verizon. 1. Can Blackberry sync all of the same things that a Windows Mobile can? 2. Is there anything special I have to do. 3. More importantly, any instructions on how to set up a Blackberry to work with my SBS 2003 with the least amount of trouble (and hopefully not additional server piece).     - PCI Sound cards supported from Legacy audio driver I have checked the HCL to find the PCI cards supported from the Legacy audio driver, as I must install a sound card and I don't like to install any software not designed for Windows nor software from vendors. The HCL *do not report* the list of hardware compatibility with Legacy audio driver.     - Netopia 3347NWG with Remote Desktop and Remote Web Workplace I currently have a Netopia 3347NWG, using PPOE to connect to Deltacom (a local DSL), which is connected to the WAN Ethernet Adapter of an SBS 2003 Premium R1 (ISA not installed). The LAN Ethernet Adapter (of the SBS) is set to 192.168.16.2 and is connected to a switch into which is connected the rest of the office network. IP passthrough is enabled in the Netopia's Expert - Configuration section to User Configured PC, and the WAN Ethernet Adapter has the static IP address (72.xxx.xxx.xxx). Despite that, external ping and RWW and RDP will not work. Internally, I can use Remote Desktop from a workstation to access the server (via Remote Desktop Connection). I can also ping the server, on either the WAN or LAN adapter. If I try to access RWW from the workstation via https://sbs2003/Remote, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage". If I try to access RWW from a workstation in the LAN via https://192.168.16.2/Remote, I get "There is a problem with this website's security certificate", and if I then click "Continue to this website (not recommended)", I get "The page cannot be found" (HTTP error 404). In IIS Admin, Default Website is running and can be browsed; companyweb also is running and can be browsed. Remote Access directly into the Netopia setup works, via http://72.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080. Obviously, this needs to be changed, but prior message strings refer to configuration settings which do not seem to be present on this Netopia model. There is a telnet access available to this Netopia, from a local workstation, which seems to provide a lot more options -- with little helpful instruction.     - Restoring OEM SBS 2003 to different hardware after catrastrophe We are developing / testing our disaster recovery processes and are using Acronis True Image with the Universal Restore option. However, I'm pretty clueless about MS licensing... If our SBS 2003 domain controller dies ... we have an Acronis image that we can restore to a different piece of hardware using the Universal Restore option (bare-metal to different hardware). 1. How does MS licensing impact this scenario? 2. Will we be allowed to activate the OS on the new hardware platform since it is an OEM version? 3. Would this be any different if it were Windows Server 2003 instead of SBS ? (we have that scenario also) 4. Is there a way to upgrade our OEM SBS 2003 to a non-OEM version that can e transfered via a disaster restore? Finally, in order to even test out our disaster recovery plan, we would need to activate Windows Server on the new (different) hardware platform for a short period of time to validate that everything works. ...How are other companies working through this same disaster recovery scenario with MS licensing?     - NTbackup I am running Microsoft 2003 SBS with a primary C: partition size of 60GB. My secondary partition is 500GB. I have 2 ESATA external 500GB hard drives that I back up to and rotate weekly. When NTbackup runs I get an alert that the disk drive is low on disk space and the back up fails. It is acting like NTbackup cache localy to the C: partition and then transfers the back up it to the external drive? and is there a way to fix this so I dont keep getting this low disk space error.     - Full restore won't work. Help! I'll try to keep this succinct. I'm no SBS or server expert but I've set up a SBS Std server for my small office of about 15 PCs and kept it running fairly well for the past four years. This weekend I found it wouldn't boot with the error "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\NTOSKRNL.exe" After researching and trying to repair from CD and checking the boot.ini file, chkdsk said there were unrecoverable errors. I do regular full backups to an external drive so I slapped a new hard drive in the tower and did a fresh OS install, then followed the instructions I found on restoring from a backup. After many hours it completed and went to reboot, where I got the message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk." I tried again with another hard drive, then from an older backup file. Same problem each time. Then I saw in another post that I needed to get the fresh OS up to the SP2 level I had before so I tried that and still have the same error at boot. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I need to either 1) repair the failed restore state I have. 2) figure out why my restores don't work and do it correctly. or 3) reinstall a fresh OS and migrate my user accounts, email, sharepoint, etc from backup data.     - installing a wireless router at work Dear Forumers, I would like to install a (wireless) router between the internet plug on the wall and my PC at work. Ordinarily, my machine is connected to the internet through the company internal network. I would like to set up a router because I could plug a second machine to the router and access the internet from that second machine, and maybe use a handheld device. So I set up a router between my PC and the internet plug on the wall. For some reason, I then could not access the internet at all from my first machine. Is there something obvious I am doing wrong?     - Need help using msiexec.exe I think I found a way to fix my "hang" problem during setup, but I need to install Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable to do it. Situation: I am in "forced" Setup mode and am at the point where my server "hangs" at the 12-min left mark in "Registering Components". The problem, I think, is with the system not being able to find and use Visual C++2005 Redistributable. The problem is that because it's hung up, it won't recognize any drive letter expect C (I've tried cd\ and XCOPY - no luck), so my thought is to use msiexec.exe to auto- place the file (vsredist_x86.exe) into c:\Windows]WinSxS\ and then execute it. Conundrum: I've looked at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235291(VS.80).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372024(VS.85).aspx and don't really feel comfortable in putting them together to do what I want.     - SBS2003 & 2008 TS Deployment, Just want to make sure it will work Hi I am planning a deployment of a SBS2003 server (unfortunately needs to occur soon so cannot wait for SBS2008 :( ). It will server files, exchange & SQL to total of 50 local & remote users. Also will be a Terminal Server box for 30 remote users (22 sites). I thought 2008 would be the best option here with the added TS functionality. Remote users will be served Outlook, an SQL Front end app & Office etc. A 2000/2000 link for TS/RWW connections will be provisioned with 512/512 clients ADSL 2+ for other main office traffic While most remote sites are static, there will be use from home connections etc so I was going to use RWW for all remote connections. With cost a big issue saving on deploying VPN hardware etc. However I have read that there are issues 2008 and SBS2003 through RWW. Firstly the 2008 TS does not show up as an application server in RWW, is there a work around for this? I would like to take advantage of the 'easy print' also, so if there is a work around to get the 2008 TS visible in RWW will RWW pass RDP 6.0? I guess the alternative is to use TS Gateway straight to the TS box using HTTPS, but that sidesteps the other RWW features. I'm not 100% sure yet but likely full Remote Desktop will be presented to the remote clients (restricted to only allowable apps) and will likely use RemoteApps to serve apps to the LAN clients. I guess I just wanted to find out what issues this config may present. I've tried Recovery Console > FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, & CHKDSK, then 3-4 times of a Repair of Windows to no avail. Still stuck at 12-13 minutes.     - Event ID 402 I received the above error on my SBS 2003 server which has Exchange 2003 on it. When I looked into the sessions on the default Smtp Virtual Server, I saw hundreds of sessions from my ISP server which is configured as a backup for my server. If my server is down, the ISP spools the messages and then sends them to my exchange server when it comes back up. I terminated all the sessions and rebooted the system and my external email is now coming through OK. But I see these same connections from the backup server showing up again. They do not terminate. It looks like a new connection is created every 20 minutes or so. I can manually terminate them so they don't clog up the server. Anyone know what's going on? Tag: POP3/IMAP login Tag: 395052

Can I setup Exchange as included with SBS 2003 for employees to have a shared calendar, shared address book, etc. without affecting the email addresses and domain names currently in use? Are there any caveats to doing this, especially considering most workstations are WinXP SP2 and one owner's laptop is Vista Business (Outlook 2K/2003 vs Windows Vista Mail)? Do we need to standardize and force everyone to run the same version of Outlook? Notes: It is a small (<10 employees) family-owned office with 2 members of the same family operating 2 different businesses with 2 different names, 2 different domain names (FQDNs), and 2 different email address name pools, but sharing 1 network, server, etc. That is one of the reasons why we decided to host Web sites and email off site. For example, how do I limit a Secretary to being able to login to only her own desktop at work from home? All the desktop computers in this office are named sequentially, such as ABC01, ABC02, ABC03, etc. In AD and/or RWW, can I specify alias names or rename the computers to reflect which user's office/cubicle/workstation each computer is at? I want to do this or something like it to make it easier for the Owners/Managers/myself(IT) to identify each computer when logging in using RWW remotely.     - Upgrade of SQL 2000 to 2005 I have read several posts on SQL upgrades but none that answer all my concerns. We run SBS 2003 SP2 (not R2) with SQL server 2000 SP4. A post I read said it is possible to upgrade to SQL 2005 standard. We have 2 vendor-supplied apps that run on SQL which are compatible with 2005 and can be reinstalled if needed. My main concerns are ISA Server 2004 and SBS Monitoring which both run on SQL Server DE. Will they migrate with the SQL 2005 upgrade? If not, how do I reinstall SBS Monitoring?     - ICW is only a temp fix W2k3 (non R2) inst in 04, no recent hardware changes, only new sw is updates, single NIC Weird problem is that Exchange stops receiving/sending external mail (services are still running fine so internal works) and external RDC connections fail (internal connections still work fine) Running ICW fixes problem for a short time (20 to 40 minutes). Exchange sends and receives and a remote RDC can connect. If a RDC is made and left running, the amount of time before loss of connection occurs can be extended for hours.     - New Router, Need Help Hello, I wanted to bring Internet connectivity to the warehouse, So I ran a CAT 5 cable over there... I'm running SBS 2003 1-NIC w/o ISA; I have a D-Link DSS-16+ switch connecting everything together, including the Adtran NetVanta 3200 T1 Modem, and my New router D-Link EBR-2310. On the 2 computers over in the warehouse, I can't connect to the internet. I've disabled the DHCP on the router, It should just be plug and play from there... Both computers are signed into the network, they have administrative privileges for this exercise.... What else do I have to do??     - RWW Cant Download ActiveX Control? One of the employees here has a tablet PC running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002. Everything worked fine, but yesterday he updated windows to SP3 and now, he cant use remote web workplace to connect to his desktop at work. On his computer, if i goto the server's IP address, login, and choose "Connect To Client Desktops" or even "Connect to Server Desktops", it goes to the other screen and shows the list of computers, but immediatly a window pops up and says this: "This portion of the Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again." Here's the issue, absolutely EVERYTHING in the Security tab for the IE settings has been changed to either Enabled or Prompt.. Nothing at all is disabled! I did this for Internet and Local Intranet, and under the trusted sites ive added the http site and https sites for the server. And still... it doesnt work! Anyone know why?     - way to long to boot. Is there a domain controller update for windows server 2003 r2 that helps with slow boot up process. It takes up to 8 minutes to get to the login screen.     - Outlook 2007 fails to auot send/receive HI All, Not sure if I'm posting in the right group.... We are running SBS 2003 R2 w/exchange SP2. One of my users connects to exchange via Outlook 2007. For some reason, outlook will not auto send/receive upon connecting to thee xchange. The user has to manually hit "send/receive". This also occurs when sending new messages, the user has to hit "send/receive". in order for the message to go out. I've tweaked with the users outlook settings without effective results.     - Intelligent Mess Filtering Question Can I ask you folks a question about the IMF guide? I'm just working my way thru it and in the section for createing the connection filtering rules, it asks for: " In the DNS Suffix of Provider box, type the DNS suffix that your provider appends to the IP address. " What do I put in there and how would I find it? Our provider does a store and forward for me and that's it ... it then goes in to my local exchange server.     - Help! push mail down Yesterday I was doing an exercise in learing about web services, and put a test folder in IIS to house these files. the web service would not run, and after some research learned that this service would need .net 2.x. No problem, i install 2.x, then go to IIS and enable 2.x in the properties tab for this folder. Big Mistake! All web services go down, turns out I can't run 2 versions of .net in IIS. Ok, so i delete the test folder, uninstall 2.x, and reboot the server. Internal websites back up, remote web workplace back up, owa back up... but no push mail. Looking in IIS, i notice the asp.net tab is missing under properties. I decide to reregister .net with IIS: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe -i -enable Rerun Internet and Email Config Wizard still no push mail! When trying to print from the Small Business Server Share Network Printer I receive an onscreen message "print failed" and nothing is printed. Thinking it was a permission problem I shared the printer out as all users in Domain, also gave the user Printer Operator Rights. Same Problem. Most of my experiences in Server world have been dealings with Windows 2003 Standard Ed. as a Terminal Services Server for Retail environment. This is my first real experience with Windows Small Business 2003 Std Edition (non-R2) and it's inter-connected components. Simply put, Exchange scares the heck out of me. I want to make sure I baby this to death - we know how important e-mail is to everyone. I have a series of questions: 1) Looking for a good, strong solution on backuping up Exchange. What is the difference between online/offline backups etc. A best practices guide type of document -- or book. 2) I'm not sure what the baseline is for Exchange. We have 53 mailboxese and my Store seems to consume 600MB to 800MB pre-SP2 Update. I'm monitoring now using TaskMgr to see what it is since SP2 upgrade. 3) SP2 - I have just had an experience adding SP2 - I followed a document that indicated adding CN=Content Filtering using adsiedit.msc. This basically did not allow store.exe to initialize. Once removed, all ran ok. How do I confirm SP2 is working as it should. What is involved in the IMF v.2.0 (features, how to setup and manage) 4) I have been trying to use the Exchange Best Practices Tool to diagnose and resolve any issues. The following is the output of the device. a) The space for the paging file (7000) is larger than the physical memory (4095). This may affect the system performance. It is recommended to have paging file size equal to the physical memory. Note: I increased the PF, as most MS resources suggest 1.5 x physical memory. I have set it to static. Will this truely be an issue? b) Automatic update for the Intelligent Message Filter is not enabled on server IBM-SERVER2. To improve the effectiveness of the filter, follow the instructions outlined in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 907747. c) The checkpoint file path for storage group 'First Storage Group' on server IBM-SERVER2 (C:\PROGRAM FILES\EXCHSRVR\MDBDATA) does not match the transaction log path (E:\EXCHANGEDATA). This issue can cause extended downtime when disk failures occur. Note: This did not appear when I ran it before installing SP2 d) Exchange fatal error information on server ibm-server2.ScotianGold.local is not automatically sent to Microsoft for analysis. It is recommended that you enable this feature through the Exchange System Manager. I assume, not really life threatening. e) The 'gatewayProxy' attribute for Recipient Update Service 'Recipient Update Service (Enterprise Configuration)' contains old data that was not fully processed. This data has existed since 2007-03-24T17:42:55Z and should be manually removed to avoid accidental changes to user addresses. Note: I have two of these messages. One for the Enterprise and one for the domain itself. I followed the instructions - but was not sure about deleting anything and what the results would be.     - exchange public folder certificate error Recently a sbs server has started to display a certificate error every time we try to display any public folder property in ESM. The error is : 'The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted. ID No:80090325 Exchange System manager' I've tried re-running the sbs internet connection wizard with no result. Also i've tried importing certificates into trusted root store using IE6. additionally i've tried unticking the 'use ssl' option for both exadmin and exchweb in IIS. All these have had no effect whatsoever. The server is running SBS 2003 with the latest service packs. Additionally the server has had certificate services installed onto it for some reason - but not sure if this is relevant. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what is wrong ?.     - Network Cable Unplugged...? IBM xSeries 346, Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet 57xx NIC OS: SBS2003 R2 Premium I'm have an issue with my External NIC and LinkSYS AG241. It's just started giving me connectivity issues with the message 'Network cable unplugged'. The troubleshooting steps I've tried: Updated both the Internal and External Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet 57xx dirvers to latest version. The one thing that seems to have stopped the error message is to switch the offending NIC's Speed & Duplex to 10mbps Half and not 'Auto' or 100mbs Half/Full. Where as before when the NIC's Speed & Duplex was set to 'Auto' or '100mbps' the LinkSYS port would flash as would the NIC's (flash, connect then drop connection). I've swapped the cables around serveral time as the only way I can confirm it can't be the cables is when Speed & Duplex is changed when the same cable is used.     - VPN Remote Access Issue - Can Login, but can't access local resour I'm trying to log in remotely to a SBS 2003 Domain, fully patched. I'm trying to login from my XP Pro machine at home which is also fully patched. Environment is as follows: There are a total of four servers. 3 Servers exist at the office, I have an additional BDC server that exists at home(remote location). Here's the rundown: At the office: 1 SBS 2003 server (Jupiter) Jupiter has two nics, one nic has a live static IP on the internet which is a FQDN, the other is an internal static IP address for the local business network of 172.16.10.7. 1 Win2K BDC and Print server (Mercury) 1 Win2K File and DHCP Server (Venus) Several desktops connected to the 3 servers At home(my remote location): All computers (desktops and servers) at home connect through a router, with all IP addresses starting with 172.16.11/24. We Have: 1 Win 2K BDC and backup file Server (mars). 2 desktops connected to Mars at home both remotely VPN to Jupiter. The BDC server at home (MARS) connects to the SBS 2003 (Jupiter) via VPN. Home network uses the following internal IP addresses: 172.16.11/24 Business network uses the following internal IP addresses: 172.16.10/24 Everything on the local network at the office (or at home) works flawlessly. Here's the route of the problem: From home, I can login into my SBS 2003 server remotely. But I can't do anything once I get there. If I use my MS Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003 while logged onto Jupiter through the VPN tunnel, a message keeps popping up saying "needs password". I have entered the password 20 times, and nothing... Today, I again attempted to login remotely via VPN. I obtained an IP address. However, this time I got one ping off to Venus before everything else timed out. I also tried to ping Jupiter, all timed out. System was working flawlessly until about 2-3 weeks ago. Then my home Outlook started crashing all the time because of what appeared to be a problem with access to a public folder that we heavily use at the office, so i decided to delete my pst file at home, delete all my outlook settings, and start over. Only after I deleted my exchange settings at home, I could never get them to populate back when I tried to reconfigure Outlook. Eventually, I noticed that my vpn connections were not listing a VPN IP address. I thought this peculiar so went to the office and checked out the DHCP server (Venus --it's also our file server)). At first, I thought the problem was related to that. So, I rebooted the Venus Win2K server and DHCP was working. I then confirmed that we were getting an ip address via VPN thru a PPP adapter at home. I poked my head around some server settings on the SBS 2003 Server (Jupiter), did the internet configuration wizard again and the firewall config wizard on the SBS 2003 server and went back home. Once I got back home yesterday, everything was great. I could access all network resources from home. I could access everything. I was getting a DHCP address via VPN at home (remote location) and my exchange inbox at home downloaded megabytes of email from the exchange server. Life was good........Until I rebooted my home computer. I don't know if the problem just rematerialized or was related to my reboot of my home computer. Considering that the other computer also gain access again to its server, and then lost it after I reboot, my natural inclination is to blame the reboot of the home XP Pro machine, but it could just be coincidence. Now I'm back to where I started from (sorta). When I connect to the VPN, I'm getting an IP address. It's 172.16.10.25. Last night, I could ping all the servers, mercury, venus, mars, jupiter. I just couldn't do anything inside the network at work. Now I can't even ping the servers. If I try to access a mapped network drive, I get an error message saying "the local device name is already in use" The connection has not been restored. If I boot up outlook it says "needs exchange password" and refuses to do anything else except ask me to renter the password. Same thing happens on the other XP Pro machine at home (I didn't reboot that one). Now, my outlook at home does nothing. It keeps saying "trying to connect to exchange server", but doesn't prompt for a password. Problem seems to be morphing.... I'm really at a loss here. Doesn't appear to be a problem with DHCP or DNS. Perhaps WINS playing a role? Firewall settings on Jupiter (SBS 2003 server) seem like the obvious area to explore. I can login remotely to jupiter by using the remote desktop access, but I just can't access the office's network resources which obviously is problematic for me. Interesting, ever since I installed the SBS server, it has never permanently accepted any changes made to the firewall settings. What I mean here is that if I access "server management" and click on the "change firewall" settings, I must then go through the internet connection wizard everytime. Obviously something is amise here. Might it have something to do with Hosting the DHCP server on Venus (a win2k server)? Am I required to have the PDC/Exchange Server also function as a DHCP server in SBS 2003 environments to support VPN? Further update: When I could no longer ping the office from home via vpn, I reset all of the Firewall settings on home desktop computer and solved that problem. I can now ping away again, but get the dreaded "enter password" when trying to access the exchange server. So perhaps the problem is in the firewall settings, question is where. Is it the server? Desktop PC? If it is the desktop PC at home, why does the other desktop PC also not get access when no changes have been made to that machine....this to me indicates it's a server issue. Question is where is the problem. Any thoughts, greatly appreciated. Sure there is. Exchange IMAP4 and POP services can be accessed from
wherever the ports are visible. Do you have SBS Premium or Standard?
