Hello i've got an odd one I was hoping I could get some assistance with,

This customer has 10 new xp pro computers and 1 sbs2k3 server that I
installed. They rely on PaperPort for their document/pdf/scanning management.

Several times a week when copying or renaming a file within paperport,
it freezes. When it freezes on this users system it takes down every
application for every user on the network, with the normal unable to open
file type of error.

I unplug her system from the network thinking it is the source of the
problem or interference, this does not change anything.

Here's where it gets wierd. Even though none of the applications will
run, I can still access the mapped drive and copy and paste items from it. I
can ping the server and bring up the internet. Outlook remains connected and
recieves mail fine.
However, no network applications will work. With performance monitor running
on the server I can see the number of open files go from 170 down to 0
immediately following the paperport crash.

In task manager on the server my processor is normal and below 15%, ram
and virtual memory are normal, there are no tasks eating up the processor.
There are no events in the event log relating to any type of problem. I
disconnect the server from the network and attempt to rename the folder (via
win explorer) that the user was copying when paperport crashed, I cannot
rename it explorer essentially freezes. Only a reboot of the server will
bring the network back to its normal state.

My question is this:

What performance monitoring counters would you recommend I watch to
determine why the server is not processing requests? (I can't seem to
determine to what it's not processing since the mapped drives are still up
and running, and outlook is as well) (please omit the default counters,
current drive queue length, ,active connections and open files)

When a workstation copys a folder from the server to another directory on
the server and the workstation crashes in the middle of the copy, what
process or service running on the Server would be effected by the workstation
crashing?

Theoretically If I can see the files on a mapped drive without any problems
but when I go to open those files in any app (word,excel,adobe,etc) and the
app freezes without any errors what would this be indicitive of? (assuming of
course it's not a permission problem, I can open said docs locally on my
workstation, and after a server reboot those files open fine)

It seems the server is detecting a partial copy or corrupt file and for some
reason this is taking the server down.

Oh there is one important thing I forgot to mention, they were having the
same exact problem on another server before I installed the sbs2k3. Also, all
workstations have been replaced with no results.

I am absolutely positive this is a paperport specific issue (sorry, and yes
I have posted in the paperport newsgroup as well). I'm looking for help in
how to determine what the exact problem it is causing on my server is.

As always thanks for your time and assistance,

Tony

Cris,

Sbs Standard Edition Pre-installed on a dell server with all service packs
installed.
Symantec Endpoint virus software and win Xp pro workstations.

Essentially what is happening after paperport freezes is that we can view
files on the mapped network drives (within windows explorer) but are unable
to open any of those files within a normal time period (approximately 2
minutes for a small file, any file). Because most of our applications run as
shared executables off of the server they are really effected.

I tried restarting all services and processes on the server to see if I
could determine which one was being effected by the paperport freeze with no
luck.

This is similar to that slow copy problem some sbs2k3 dc's and xp pro
stations would have several years ago, only different, but similar in the way
the server didn't have any tell tale signs of an issue. (as far as
performance,task,network monitoring goes)

Take Care,
Tony

Again, just to be clear...is paperport the only application affected?
Are you running this from the server (if so, I'd install this locally to =
a machine and see if the behavior changes)?
There are very, very few applications that really run well when being =
executed from the server by several folks at once.
Did this by any chance start happening after the installation of the =

;=20
Hello i've got an odd one I was hoping I could get some assistance=20
with,
>
>       This =
customer has=20
10 new xp pro computers and 1 sbs2k3 server that I =
>  =20
installed. They rely on PaperPort for their document/pdf/scanning =
management.=20
>
>       Several times a =
week=20
when copying or renaming a file within paperport,
>   =
it=20
freezes. When it freezes on this users system it takes down every=20
> application for every user on the network, with =
the=20
normal unable to open
>   file type of error.
> =
> I unplug her system from the =
network=20
thinking it is the source of the
>   problem or =
interference,=20
this does not change anything.
>=20
>       Here's where it gets =
wierd. Even=20
though none of the applications will
>   run, I can =
still=20
access the mapped drive and copy and paste items from it. I=20
> can ping the server and bring up the internet. =
Outlook=20
remains connected and
>   recieves mail fine.=20
> However, no network applications will work. With=20
performance monitor running
>   on the server I can =
see the=20
number of open files go from 170 down to 0
>   =
immediately=20
following the paperport crash.
>=20
> In task manager on the =
server my=20
processor is normal and below 15%, ram
>   and =
virtual memory=20
are normal, there are no tasks eating up the processor. =
>  =20
There are no events in the event log relating to any type of problem. =
I=20
> disconnect the server from the network and =
attempt to=20
rename the folder (via
> win explorer) that the =
user was=20
copying when paperport crashed, I cannot
>   rename =
it=20
explorer essentially freezes. Only a reboot of the server will=20
> bring the network back to its normal state. =
>=20
>      My question is this:
>=20
> What performance monitoring counters would you =
recommend=20
I watch to
> determine why the server is not =
processing=20
requests? (I can't seem to
>   determine to what it's =
not=20
processing since the mapped drives are still up
>   =
and=20
running, and outlook is as well) (please omit the default counters,=20
> current drive queue length, ,active connections =
and open=20
files)
>
>   When a workstation copys a folder =
from the=20
server to another directory on
> the server and the =

workstation crashes in the middle of the copy, what =
>  =20
process or service running on the Server would be effected by the =
workstation=20
>   crashing?
>    =20
> Theoretically If I can see the files on a mapped =
drive=20
without any problems
> but when I go to open those =
files in=20
any app (word,excel,adobe,etc) and the
>   app =
freezes=20
without any errors what would this be indicitive of? (assuming of=20
>   course it's not a permission problem, I can open =
said=20
docs locally on my
>   workstation, and after a =
server reboot=20
those files open fine)
>
>   It seems the =
server is=20
detecting a partial copy or corrupt file and for some =
>  =20
reason this is taking the server down.
>
>   Oh =
there=20
is one important thing I forgot to mention, they were having the=20
> same exact problem on another server before I =
installed=20
the sbs2k3. Also, all
>   workstations have been =
replaced=20
with no results.
>
>   I am absolutely positive =
this is=20
a paperport specific issue (sorry, and yes
>   I have =
posted=20
in the paperport newsgroup as well). I'm looking for help in=20
> how to determine what the exact problem it is =
causing on=20
my server is.
>
> As always thanks for your =
time and=20
assistance,
>
>   =

I agree with Cris on the question concerning Symantec Endpoint as it seems
to be a real resource hog. Also you haven't given us the server hardware
specs.
