With seemingly no changes on the server, NTBackup will no longer open. When
I try to open the default Microsoft NTBackup application, I get the
following error. Any ideas on how to fix this?

********ERROR********
ntbackup.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to
terminate the application.

Hi, these are my suggestions, and pls report back and also include more info
of your system (versions, SP levels, recent changes etc).

1. I suggest that you re-run the SBSBackup wizard and have another try.
2. If you are not using SBSBackup but NTBackup, are you backing up thru the
GUI or a batch file?
3. Are you backing up to a tape device, USB drive, a local drive or a UNC
path?
4. Does It work logged In but not logged off or doesnt work at all?

5. If using a tape device, Run a cleaning tape and try again and after that,
change tape and try again.
6. You can disconnect and reconnect the tape drive, test again. Please also
contact the hardware vendor to install the latest driver.
7. Backup to local hard disk and see if the issue will reoccur.

We do this step to see if the problem is caused by you tape.

1. Click Star and select Run.

2. Input ntbackup, click OK and then click Next.

3. Select Back up files and settings and click Next.

4. Select choose what to backup and click Next.

5. Choose the item to backup and click Next.

6. Select location to save your backup, please select a folder on local hard
disk.

7. Click finish and see if the same issue will reoccur.

Regards, Henrik

Thanks for your help.

I'm not using the SBSBackup wizard, but instead using NTBackup. And
NTBackup won't open at all no matter how I try. I usually backup to a USB
drive, but again, this isn't that NTBackup won't work once it's opened,
NTBackup won't open at all (I get the error shown in the original post).
So I can't follow any of your suggestions, because they all require me to
open NTBackup.

Revert back to SBSBackup by running the SBSBackup wizard, just to see if the
wizard can configure a backup job. If it does, schedule and have a test run
to see if NTBackup launches.

What version of SBS are you running?
Have you any errors In your system eventlog?

If you are running SBS2003 without SBS SP1, apply It. If you have SP1 for
SBS, an option Is to reapply it, I have seen several cases were It solves
issues with installed applications. The most recent one, yesterday.

I'm running SBS2003 with SBS SP1. And I don't see how SBSBackup and
NTBackup are related (except that they're both backup apps). Is either of
these dependent on the other?

As far as I know, they are one and the same thing. SBSBackup is simply
NTBackup nicely packaged and setup for you through a wizard. But perhaps
someone with more knowledge will confirm this for you.

While it can't hurt to try SBS Backup from Server Management, I wonder if
you are receiving any relevant errors in your event logs. You can try to
run the program (either one), note the time, and then check the event
viewer.

Did you consider going to SP2? - it cures various VSS writer issues that
stop NTBACKUP running properly in some circumstances - cured a number of
backup issues on more then one server for me, though I dont think I had
that specific one.

Yeah, I checked the event viewer . . . all it says is that a popup was
displayed and then gives me the exact same error message with no further
details.

SBS Backup doesn't work either . . . all it does is setup a schedule to
"call" NTBackup . . . but when it tries to open NTBackup, I get the same
cannot initialize application error.

So nothing new installed?

I would check the task manager for left-over ntbackup processes and kill
them. Also stop and start the RSM "Removable Storage" service, especially
if you use tape (you may need to rebuild the RSM database in that case,
google it).

Did you try rebooting?

Yes, I rebooted the server a few times (which would kill ntbackup processes)
. . . and we're using USB drives, not tape. This may have something to do
with the fact that our "Cryptographic Services" service is not running and
can't be started (for some reason). But I'm not sure if the two are related
at all.
