I really hated NTBackup in the day, but it recommended for Exchange. Does it
support Open Files (using Shadow Copy) - if it does I will seriously consider
getting rid of this CA product and using the Freebe

What CA product are you using? CA BrightStor Arcserve does have an Open file
Agent.

Allen,

Yes we are using Brightstor Arcserver and the open file agent with our VXA-3
tape drive. For the most part it works.

I have been unsuccessful to get to work (as it says ) to a Hard drive. I
have tried a USB drive, a Buffalo NAS and even to our spare IBM SAS drive in
the server. Apparently the "supported drives" are limited to two.

I would like to implement a second backup as I have had nothing but bad luck
with Tapes (probably just me, no reflection of the product) over the years.

I'm familar with Symantec Livestate Recovery (Now BackupExec) - but can't
get the trial to work to a local drive or usb drive. It worked to a mapped
share but took 31hrs to do -lol I think it fails as soon as we RDP into the
server, times seem to align

If I can find something else.

Assuming SBS 2003, the best option is probably SBS Backup as found in the
Server Management Console. Note that if you are using tape as the media,
SBS Backup does not seem to like some tape drives very well. If it works it
can be flawless, if it doesn't, then (usually) plain NT Backup will if
scripted properly.

Look for example 2 in the above document for scripting NT Backup.

How does the "Small Business Server Backup taskpad" handle Open Files - does
it use VSS?

The simple answer to your question is yes, NTBackup uses VSS to backup open
files. The SBS backup wizard is a handy tool for automating NTBackup so
there is rarely a reason to use something else...
