Hello,

Is somebody already do this task ?

I find the following article for just changing hardware
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/a340742f-042e-48da-b865-5244bee1000f1033.mspx?mfr=true

And I also found articles that use ADMT to make a complete migration.

So what is the best way to achive my goal ?

Can I Upgrade SBS 2003 on the source Server to SBS 2003 SP1, then use the
article above for moving to the new HardWare and after install the R2 CD ?

Thanks a lot for you answers.

Syncerly Yours, David.

You would be better off doing the move to new hardware first.

You can use this article, but as others I'm sure will attest, you would =
be much better off using the swing migration method found at =
sbsmigration.com

Yes there's a cost for that, but you also get dedicated support AND

Your current server stays intact until you are ready to bring the new =
online.

The Microsoft method basically makes it impossible to go back to the =
original server if something goes wrong.

Do you really need to do this now??? Have you already purchased R2?

Perhaps the wiser choice is to wait for SBS 2008 if you have not already =
purchased R2

Hello David,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Cris for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you want to migrate the
SBS 2003 to new hardware, and upgrade the SBS 2003 to SBS 2003 R2 at the
same time. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to
let me know.

Cris's suggestions are good, you can do the migration thru some 3rd-party
tools or method (swing migration). I only want to add the general Microsoft
method.

Based on my research, we unable to do the SBS 2003 migration and the
upgrade at the same time. We need to do the migration and the upgrade one
by one. There are 2 methods for you to do the process:

1. Upgrade your old SBS 2003 to SBS 2003 R2, then migrate the SBS 2003 R2
from old hardware to new hardware thru the following document:

Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2003 to New Hardware
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/62e2094e
-ad4e-4227-b20e-97a716ed7c861033.mspx

2. Migrate your old SBS 2003 to new hardware first, still thru the document
above. Then, upgrade the SBS 2003 to SBS 2003 R2 on the new hardware.

To complete upgrade from SBS 2003 to SBS 2003 R2, you need to buy the SBS
2003 R2 upgrade disks first, then do the upgrade. The upgrade has 2
scenarios:

===================
Additionally, please refer to the price of the R2 upgrade:
Pricing for Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (Version Upgrade)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx
==================

Scenario 1: The SBS 2003 had applied SBS 2003 SP1:

1. Log on to the server, using the built-in Administrator account.

2. Insert Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Disc 1 into the CD-ROM
drive. The Autorun page should appear. If it does not appear, click click
Start, click Run, and then type D:\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of
your CD-ROM drive. If you are using the DVD, type D:\CD1\Setup.exe, where
D: is the letter of your DVD drive.

3. Click Set up Windows Small Business Server.

4. On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows Small Business Server page, click
Next.

5. The Upgrade Information page lists tasks to complete before you begin
the upgrade.
Note If you want to review the list of tasks before you begin the
upgrade, see "Before You Begin the Upgrade" in Chapter 3B and Chapter 3C of
Getting Started: Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1.

6. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

7. Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Technologies, if
this applies to you.

8. Complete the To Do List tasks.

9. Insert the R2 Technologies disc in your CD-ROM drive. The Autorun page
should appear. If it does not appear, click Start, click Run, and then type
D:\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. If you are using
the DVD, type D:\CD1\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your DVD drive.

10. Click Windows Small Business Server R2

11. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

Scenario 2: The SBS 2003 without SBS 2003 SP1:
If you want to upgrade from Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows
SBS 2003 R2 and you have not installed Windows SBS 2003 Service Pack 1
(SP1), you must install the service pack before you run Setup for the
Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies. This is because the Windows SBS 2003 R2
Technologies can install only on a computer that is running Windows SBS
2003 with SP1. You must first install SP1 on the computer that is running
Windows SBS 2003, and then install the Windows SBS 2003 R2 Technologies.

1. Apply SBS 2003 SP1:
Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0/f/e0fee8ce-768d-41c0-8871-9bc48e0
b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm

2. Upgrade the SBS 2003 SP1 to R2:
Perform the steps in scenario 1#

I hope the information will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
