I can sign up for MailHop Relay from DynDNS for an additional $10 per year,
per domain versus MailHop Backup MX. Is it worth the effort to stop using
port 25 and use an alternate port?

I have IMF and Trend working to eliminate approximately 99% (guestimate) of
all offensive email. The volume of rejected email is considerable but I have
not looked at it or measured it in a long while, so I don't really know.

I'm using my ISP as a SmartHost. Does that cause a problem with MailHop
Relay?

I'm thinking that MailHop Relay will lessen the strain on my modem, router,
and server by preventing a bunch of stuff from even coming in. According to
the DynDNS site, MailHop Relay has: spam scanning and auto-discarding with
SpamAssassin (including user-configurable thresholds), Sender whitelisting
and blacklisting with pattern matching, Virus elimination with ClamAV, and
DNSBL filtering and discarding.

Isn't this basically what Vlad's Exchange Defender does? What does Vlad
charge? His site does not have a hint of pricing info. I tend to assume, if
you have to ask, you probably can not afford it.

Nah Cris, not free, but a known cost, plainly stated on the dyndns site.
ExchDef has no indication of costs (last I looked), you must ask for a
quote.

Not quite the same as Jim but I also tend to use services I can most easily
establish the cost of, tending to ignore products (rather than simply
expecting unreasonable cost) which do not have easily available pricing
information.

So, is it worth the trouble?

Pricing is not listed on the Website because Vlad doesn't sell directly to
end users, only available throught VARs, System Integrators, etc, so prices
can somewhat vary

Nah Cris, not free, but a known cost, plainly stated on the dyndns site.
ExchDef has no indication of costs (last I looked), you must ask for a
quote.

Not quite the same as Jim but I also tend to use services I can most easily
establish the cost of, tending to ignore products (rather than simply
expecting unreasonable cost) which do not have easily available pricing
information.

I don't and none of my customers use external services, and our routers,
modems and servers are doing just fine.

And you're saying that MailHop Relay is free??
As far as I know, Exchange Defender is pretty reasonably priced

I'm thinking that MailHop Relay will lessen the strain on my modem,
router,
and server by preventing a bunch of stuff from even coming in. According
to
the DynDNS site, MailHop Relay has: spam scanning and auto-discarding with
SpamAssassin (including user-configurable thresholds), Sender whitelisting
and blacklisting with pattern matching, Virus elimination with ClamAV, and
DNSBL filtering and discarding.

Isn't this basically what Vlad's Exchange Defender does? What does Vlad
charge? His site does not have a hint of pricing info. I tend to assume,
if
you have to ask, you probably can not afford it.

Are you proposing to use MailHop Relay in a hope to eliminate the rest of
it?
Spam is always going to be an issue...sounds like you've done a reasonably
good job if you're getting that much eliminated...probably better than
most
