We need to put a SBS2003 Server into production ASAP-like this
weekend! We ordered our 20-pak CALS version upgrade from Dell over a
week ago and asked them to expedite. We called them yesterday to get
an update and it sounded like it was going to be the case where we
could have the CAL license emailed to us...now it does not.

1.Does anyone know of a way to get temporary licenses, or where to buy
them where you can get the license number over the phone?? We are
going to call Microsoft to see if they can help.

2. Also, we have the MS Action Pack which is supposed to contain 10
CALs for SBS2003 Premium R2...is there a way to use those
temporarily? At least we would have most systems conmected.

3 Thirdly, we have CAL license for 10 for SBS2003 Premium (but not R2)
that we have not tried to install yet...would they work?

Thanks!

Hello:

SBS does not enforce its licensing. It is up to you. You may be able to
connect all the workstations, using the wizards, with out error. But you
will still need to acquire the licenses to be in compliance.

What you should get is a message in the event logs that you are licensed for
X and xx connections have occurred.

Thanks..do you happen to know if the non-R2 licenses would install?

Also, we are on the line with MS through our partner channel to see if
they can help.

Don't install them. Wait for the ones you're supposed to get. You do not
need to install the licenses before deploying the server.

Ah actually SBS 2003 'does' enforce licenses but it does have some
wiggle room

If you have action pack and are legal for action pack, I don't see that
there's an issue with using them.

Cals are Cals.

Splitting hairs, if you've have purchased the CALs but not received (and
installed them), your closer to being legal than to use CALs issued for
another installation or customer. Suggest waiting the extra day or two for
the proper licenses to arrive. You should have very little (if any)
difficulty at all for setup and initial use.

Thanks everyone. Yes, we have current Action Pack subscription...but
it just has the PID sticker for when you install the software. Are you
saying that is the #we use for licensing? Or are the Cals on the one
of the Cds??

Secondly, we are under the gun to get this server in production over
weekend..starting today at 5pm EST -current server is failing..how
much "wiggle" room do we have on the CALs? if we can get 15 (instead
of 25) connected we might be ok.

Also, we called MS -no help even buying retail. Called other vendors,
nothing avail overnight or by Monday. Tried purchasing just 5-paks,
none out there from our vendors...

Maybe see how many connect, then install the ones we have from other
customer install....ugh!! Delete them after we get ours...

Can't you use the cals from the old SBS or has that SBS died? Or is
this not an old SBS you are trying to replace?
